The "big" day has finally arrived>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This time the deckchairs are taking on the "Chairboys" for promotion back to the Championship.
This is the mackem`s fourth consecutive season in the third tier of English Football!
The once "Bank of England" club - up untill the late 50`s - has become a lumbering "big club", yo-yoing between the top tier, the Championship and now - the equivalent of League Division Three.
After "Big Sam" left to take up the England job, David Moyes presided over a disasterous season with eventual relegation in 2017.
A season later they had dropped like a stone into Division Three.
George Ezra, Drake and Ed Sheeran were amongst the top selling singles in 2018 and Boris wasnt yet Prime Minster.
Rapid changes of Management, inconsistency, over-paid average players and uncertainty over ownership - have all contributed to their demise.
Last season they were matched by a resurgent Lincoln City in the play-off semi-finals. They lost 3-2 on aggregate.
Jordan Pickford, Paddy McNair and Duncan Watmore must be pleased they departed the sinking ship, [the latter two] to join a steady, promotion - seeking club down the A19.
So its now the Mackems "big day out" - some have already managed to hitch it to London, doing what Boro fans have done on several occasions over the years - paddling in the fountain in Trafalgar Square and sinking a few cups of "pop".
They have been made clear favourites, which suits Gareth Ainsworth and his battalion of players.
Underneath the media radar - Wycombe have regrouped following last seasons relegation and fought their way to the play-off final.
The "Chairboys" 23,000 fans, wont be surprised at beating the deckchairs.
The pressure is certainly on the Mackems.
Sunderland vs Wycombe Wanderers
Saturday 21st May 2022 (k.o. 3pm)
Wembley Stadium
Sky Bet League 1 Play-Off Final
Referee: Simon Hooper
We're the famous Wycombe Wanderers and we're going to Wembley... this time backed by more than 23,000 fans who will be giving everything to help their side return to the Championship.
Chairboys supporters were cheering from their sofas when Gareth Ainsworth's men overcame Oxford under the arch two years ago but this time they'll be in person, loud and proud, for an intriguing battle against a Sunderland side that defeated Sheffield Wednesday over two legs to reach the final.
Both clubs' form guide over the final two months of the season was virtually identical, both going undefeated since February, and the thrilling 3-3 draw between the sides at Adams Park in January demonstrated just how well-matched the two teams are.
Wycombe demonstrated their attacking prowess and defensive resolve in equal measure in their 2-1 aggregate triumph over MK Dons in the semis, and now another famous day in their history awaits on their third visit to Wembley in eight years.
["...third visit to Wembley in eight years"!]
A victory for Wycombe will surely see another exit of players from the Stadium of ****.
