I am always in the pool with the kids on holiday. Throwing balls about abd playing games etc but cannot swim at all. But I'm over 6ft tall and can just stand and walk around the pool. No need to actually swim at all. What are people doing when going on holiday? Every time I go all the kids are in the pool and doing alright. Or is this more those from tougher backgrounds who can't afford to get away on holiday?
I suppose our location doesn't help, being cold, not exactly great for open water swimming without freezing your nuts off.
I get most of us possibly learnt to get better or fully learned at school, but my first lesson was on holiday when I was about 5/6 and my dad chucked me in with arm bands, on my own, and said "learn"
That's why you need to be able to make a lifejacket out of your pyjama trousers, it could save your life one dayI was always really sporty as a kid but have always swam like a brick. I can swim but I would never swim in open water because I cant tread water.
I bet you canI can do a length.
I'm not sure if I would go in a pool with kids if I couldn't swim like, in case something went wrong, but obviously depends how big/ deep the pool is etc, and how comfortable you are in the water. Sounds like you've got it covered mind, playing with balls etc, as some who can't swim won't even go in. You had to demonstrate you could swim 200m when I did my PADI. Dunno if that's changed or if some places are a bit slack on doing things properly.I'm not sure if I would go in a pool with kids if I couldn't swim like, in case something went wrong, but obviously depends how big/ deep the pool is etc, and how comfortable you are in the water. When I went diving in Egypt there was a lad on the course who could barely swim, I was terrified for him, but he seemed ok and was fine under the water, not so great on the surface mind. He got his PADI too, and we were down to like 18m I'd be a bit concerned if I was his dive partner though, well in fact I just wouldn't do it.
Haha, this lad wouldn't have been able to swim 10 meters without his life jacket on or being able to control his buoyancy with the dive vest (which he was quite good at, especially under water). You had to demonstrate you could swim 200m when I did my PADI. I think swimming on your back would probably be fine, was about 20 years ago I did mine though. Had to do 8 lengths of Byker pool, maybe people could get away with a very slow turn after each length...Haha, this lad wouldn't have been able to swim 10 meters without his life jacket on or being able to control his buoyancy with the dive vest (which he was quite good at, especially under water).
Come to think of it, 200m would probably knacker me out, as I don't swim often, but I'm still decent over short distances and could do 200m I think. Do they let you stop and get a breather, or swim on your back?
Egypt is notoriously slack on dishing out PADI certificates. I've only been diving one week, got my PADI and not been since, and that was three years ago. Going to do a refresher on my next holiday though, need to look into it all again.
