Taliban

20 years of Western occupation.
457 British Armed Forces personnel died in combat..
616 seriously injured.
Hundreds have returned home with complex needs - significantly, on-going mental health issues, such as post-traumatic stress.
The NHS bears the cost of "treatment" for those "casualties" of war.
Operation Herrick and Toral cost UK population £27,700,000,000

Another legacy of trumps reign.

As part of the US–Taliban deal, the Trump administration agreed to an initial reduction of US forces from 13,000 to 8,600 troops by July 2020, followed by a complete withdrawal by 1 May 2021, if the Taliban kept its commitments.

Now banning women from University Education.
Back to the dark ages. Astonishing that this can happen again and in 2022/23 onwards.
The world has failed Afghanistan.
I think the world did try to help Afghanistan, and too many made the ultimate sacrifice. If the Afghan people has risen up to oppose the Taliban in a similar fashion to the Ukraine people opposing the Russian annexation then things may have been very different in that country.

Don't know what the solution is tbh.

There's one or two 'look after our own' type posts above, not helpful.

Not sure if there are any more sanctions to be applied but inevitably it's those in the gutter that suffer anyway.

I'm just appalled that in an age more than 50 years sisnce we put a man on the moon we still have regimes that belong in a age of the crusades.

The UK is the second largest donor of "Military Assistance" to Ukraine [behind the United States] of £2,300,000,000 in 2022 and has pledged that [minimum] for 2023.*
If we can find the money to fund war, we can find the money to fund peace and provide health, housing, education and welfare for our people.

I am proud of the support that we have given to Ukraine, both the timing and volume. There is not much to be proud of at the moment in the way the government conducts itself on our behalf, so I’m taking what I can.

20 years of occupation didnt solve any issues.
So what do people propose?
How much are some prepared to throw billions into the arms industry, whilst Nurses use food-banks, we have the worst housing crisis since the Second World War and the richest parasites get richer as children and the elderly go hungry and poor this winter.

As we both know there is actually plenty for both. But what, may I ask, would you recommend we should have done when Putin invaded Ukraine? Written him a polite letter asking him to desist from rape, murder and wanton destruction? War is an inevitable consequence of the fundamentally aggressive nature of homo sapiens. It wasn't invented by Cheney and Halliburton.
