Tav.

Jones is quite far behind in his development compared to Tav.

Apples and Oranges.

Next.
And that just proves my point exactly. Both the same age, both attacking players……hardly apples and oranges.
Just because Tav came onto the scene at an early age I think people forget just how young he is still and expect him to be the complete player.

No, he's had far more exposure, far more games and far more experience.

He should be streets ahead. But he isn't.

So what value would YOU place on him?

It isn't a trick question.
I know it isn’t a trick question. But I’m surprised you’re persisting with asking it based on my previous response, because I’ve said my valuation would be based on who is asking for his valuation and when.

To give you an answer with a monetary value though (without knowing how longbow left on his contract). If a team like Stoke bid for him in the summer I’d be asking for £15m hoping to do a deal at about £12-£13m.

If Newcastle looked to get him in January I’d be asking for £25m looking to do a deal at about £20m.

Ok so that's a significant sum of money no matter which one you look at..

If we spent that money on a player and they produced as little as Tav in a year period would you be happy?

Yeah if we spent £10-£20m on a 21year old and he’d had the year Tav has just had, I would be a bit disappointed. Equally though I wouldn’t be overly critical of him due to the fact that he’s been played in numerous different positions and also because he’s only 22.

However it’s irrelevant because we didn’t pay £10-£20m for Tav.

He came through our youth system which is as close to a “freebie” as you can get in football.

And if anything he is likely to earn us £x millions, whether that he £5m or £25m etc. And potentially after however many years of service (whether that be average, good or excellent service etc).

So basically we should give Tav more allowances because he came through the system?

For me it doesn't work like that.

I do see your point though.

Well if by “allowances” you mean keep his place in the team if he under performing, then yeah I agree. If by “allowances” you mean criticism from fans, then I disagree.

I see it like this:

You get a used car, after 12 months it’s had quite a few problems and is underperforming.

If you’d paid £20,000 for it then I’d bet your response would be different than if you’d been given it by the old lady next door for getting her shopping and cutting her grass every now again.
