Thats the worst home performance I've ever seen

Twice.

The Valentines Day Massacre, a team with Juninho, Ince, Gascoigne, Festa could have gone above Villa (into 8th I think) and we got undone by Carbonne & Joachim with Southgate, Ehiogu, Boateng and Judas Merson also appearing for Villa.

Season ticket gate was 4th February 2006, Southgate playing for us now & the team had Schwarzer, Mendieta, Downing, Hasselbaink, Viduka & Yakubu on the bench, made Luke Moore look like Mbappe.

Erikson had just announced he was stepping down the week before, I wonder if McClaren had already had his head turned.
Yes I remember both games now but I forgot the first one was 0-4.

I've been going since 1995 and that is no where near our worst home performance.

First half we were arguably the better side. Coburn missed a huge chance and their keeper pulled off a few brilliant saves.

On another day we are going in at HT 3-1 up or better.

Then second half, there was a 12 minute spell where we capitulated and then after that, it was a non event.

For anyone to suggest it's our worst home performance they've seen, then they have clearly not been to many home games before.

I have no idea ot the strength of the stoke side but in my opinion we played too many youngsters we needed a few more older heads to help the youngsters if Coburn had put away the early chanceit may have give the youngsters a lift.

First half we had 3-4 opportunities to score vs. their 1 chance which was converted.

Even at the start of the second half, we missed a good chance to equalise. As soon as the second went in, we completely crumbled.

The first 55 minutes we were okay, given the personnel on the pitch. Not converting chances cost us. Played some good stuff at times, but then as the first half wore on it became a bit slower and more tepid. Stoke stopped playing so high up the pitch too and were happy to sit deeper and try counter.

Carrick is never going to come out and lambast players, it’s not his style. People have been complaining about the Orient managers criticism of Hemmings at the weekend. Carrick isn’t going to do that his players. For that reason, I always take his post match interviews with a pinch of salt / don’t bother listening to them.

He got the balance wrong on team selection for me. I’d have preferred another 1-2 first team players in midfield / front 4 but given current numbers and an important Championship game on Saturday I don’t overly blame him. We are threadbare in defence too.

Horrible getting battered at home but I’m over it. Hopefully we pick up 3 on Saturday and some of the injured players (particularly defenders) return after The International break.
Nice reasoned post,I went hoping to see how our promising youngsters and fringe players performed and was quite happy with the first half where we could easily have been a couple of goals ahead but without Ayling in the second half we struggled to contain them but still had chances before their goal rush.Carrick will now has a better idea of some of those on show last night can cope at a higher level as a couple showed glimpses of being capable if needed to step up to the first team.

I’m in optimistic mode

I’m glad we are out of the cup and Carrick is right.
The game will have no bearing on the next one.

And we have had far worse home performances in my lifetime

Hopefully Morris, Conway, Jones and Dyksteel not injured. If the idea was to protect 1st choice players for another day, then stick to it.

Yes, it was poor. But it was a reserve team, with only 2 first choice players in the starting 11, and one of them went off at half time.

Gilbert looked OK, despite the carnage around him.

It can happen. Probably an element of too many changes (due to wanting to protect players) and not enough experience to slow things down when they got hold of the game.

If we played our first xi and had 2 serious injuries you'd all be smashing Carrick for risking players.

It has happened, they will all learn from it and hopefully we will go again Saturday and smash an average Cardiff side with our 1st xi.

Nowhere near the worst - and Carrick was right. It was a freak 12 minutes where we fell apart.

I felt sorry for Gilbert, he was the only spark in the team unfortunately. It was a great opportunity for Hamilton to show some promise but felt like everything he touched went backwards.

Coburn sealed his fate for me. That chance in the first 5 minutes was unforgivable.

Bit harsh. How many chances has Burgzorg blown in the first few, and unarguably more important, games?

He offers something different to what we've got and I'd like to see him start with Latte Lath, I think they'd upset a few defenders with their high press and would offer an outlet to let us go from back to front a bit quicker if we wanted.

He offered nothing last night but tbh neither did a few of them. He hardly won an header and did not hold the ball up that well. Their defender had a grip of him all night. Needs to go on loan for me.
