The £5-00 Cup of Coffee in London

I get about 10/11 double shots from a 227/250g bag from the supermarket allowing for a bit of dialing in. Cheapest I buy is Aldi’s at £2 and occasionally I get some of the Rountons gear for about £8.
So when I’m having the decent coffee I’m paying 80p a cup, without considering the cost of the machine, the milk etc.

A place near me uses rountons coffee, I think they charge about £3.50 to £4.00 a cup.
If you factor all of the above in, then add wages, profit and tax to it, it’s not really that bad comparatively.

Before our Wetherspoons shut it was £1.10 for a coffee, takeaway or sit in and you could have several if you wanted.
Gets people out the house.

They will be buying in bulk though, not 250g at a time. I have a coffee subscription and that's about £18 per kg. I presume a cafe is buying in much bigger bags. Mine works out at about 32p per cup (for a double shot) and most cafes don't serve double shots. They are probably getting a single espresso for 10p in beans.

You can definitely get more expensive beans though so 10-20p per shot is probably about right.

That’s true, I was just trying to show that it’s not always the rip off that the headline alludes to.

(Where’s your sub from btw?)

In fact I’d dare say that the greasy spoons charging £1.50 to £2.00 for a Nescafé instant is a worse rip off.

I'm using Coffeworks (https://www.cworks.co.uk/) at the moment. I've tried quite a few different ones over the last year and they are all pretty good (Pact, Rave, Square Mile). Just follow the deals as they all have sign-up offers. I get them from a local roastery sometimes as well but the convenience of the delivery tends to win.

The one I had from Square Mile was probably my favourite but it was a lot more expensive.

I need to start buying in bulk for a couple of reasons, one being cost. The other reason is that I constantly change bean types and end up faffing about dialing them in each time I swap.
