The 1st ashes test

They are. Cant get too excited with a deficit still and England's penchant for collapse from seemingly decent positions. But well done Malan and Root.

Fantastic fight back. They need to back these two up with more dogged determination lower down the order. Brings pride back to England and wipe the smugness off the Aussies who already wrote this match off as a win. they may still do so but not so **** sure now listening to them.

Watched the last 20 overs. They both played a proper Test Match Innings.
Hazlewood looks goosed with a dodgy knee and Lyon looked ordinary.
Any kind of lead would be wonderful.
Aussies talking up England now already and especially the next Test when Anderson & Broad return.

At least there is a bit fight in the team. Root was always going to get a few runs. Malan is a pleasant surprise, but actually he might be suited to batting down under. Still lots more batting needed tomorrow to avoid a heavy defeat.

If we somehow manage to set them a 3 figure target, have we got the bowlers to take quick wickets?

This is maybe rose tinted glasses but there's actually been quite a few positives.

We bowled well yesterday and were a bit unlucky. Lots of edges to gaps or not carrying. Hameed has batted well without getting the runs. Pope and Buttler batted well and then obviously Root and Malan in the 2nd innings.

The selection, especially Leach, and the first session of day one has done us over. But positives to take for the series.

Another positive leach takes most of his wickets in 2nd innings, as do most spinners but leach stats are massively bias to the 2nd innings.
Hameed and malan are the best we have in those positions and need to gain experience.
Burns has had enough chances but with him and sibley not the answer there's not much to pick from.

I think the best we can hope for is a draw.

The wicket is doing something in the mornings but soon dries out when the sun comes up. Before I went to bed at lunch, you could see Starc and Hazelwood struggling to get movement but Cummins found it with his first few balls. The Aussies have great depth in batting and even the bowlers can put you to the sword with the bat.

We need to bat out all day tomorrow and leave them with a decent total to chase.

Joe Root today surpassed Michael Vaughan's record (1,481) for the most Test runs by an England batter in a calendar year; (Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf has hit most Test runs in calendar year, after scoring 1,788 in 2006)
