The Black Stuff on tonight

Don't think i've seen it since it first aired 38 years ago, amazing series. Can't imagine the writing and acting not withstanding the test of time. Good shout. utb

Oh thanks for this - no Marton Countryclub of course and Princess Alice is now an office. Two main locations I can recall.

My gran used to work at the country club in the residents bar. When they filmed a masseuse giving one of the lads a happy ending she said the phones never stopped ringing from blokes trying to get booked in for a massage.

Real vintage TV. Love to see more of these old series rather than endless repeats of Porridge, Blackadder and OFAH.

Princess Alice as now. The bar scenes were filmed in there and the regulars were used as extras. Real characters

Stayed in the Marton Country Club for 1 night when we were looking at houses in NE on 27 July 2013 and I think Boro had a pre-season friendly on that day.

The Club was then well past its former glories and we had a fairly eventful night. We were woken by riotous hotel guests and didn't get too much sleep.
Next day we found that an awning about 30 ft long had blown off the front of the hotel next to our room and was on the road below.
After we checked out we looked at the back of our bill and there was a written report from the receptionist who had called Cleveland Police to the hotel at 3am to evict drunken guests from a couple of rooms on our floor. There had been quite a rumpus and a few arrests.
The breakfast that Sunday morning at the Club was very good though.

The Princess Alice was typical Boro pub of the time, plain with large frosted windows, long bar, smoke filled, nearly all men drinking pints, no restaurant area, lots of mild chatter, no large screen TVs, built for the function of solid boozing and banter. In 1978 it probably had hardly changed in 120 years, except new paint and carpet every 8 years.
