The Carabao Cup distraction will cost us points

I feel like pre-empting this, given all our injuries and making it seem inevitable, may mean we surprise ourselves and everyone else and still pick up loads of points over Christmas.

But of course the likely scenario is that we lose every game until Chelsea.

So come on, how many does everyone think the Baggies will put past us? I’ll go for a conservative four. 😁
Honestly I dont think we will make the playoffs anyway so Im fairly relaxed about the distraction.

Would you rather win the cup beating Liverpool 5-0 in the final, or get in play-offs with a shot at promotion Stu?
Win a cup. Absolutely no doubt. Even if it relegated us.
We'll see multiple promotions and relegation in our lifetime but it's very possible we'll never see another cup win

The play-offs are still eminently achievable, but we need a goodish Christmas and we need to push on in Jan/Feb when our league fixtures are easier. That will depend on how our injury list is looking, With our first team we are competitive in this league - the best of the rest after Leicester, Ipswich, Leeds - but few squads could carry the damage we've suffered. i'm excited to see how some of the new lads do, mind, because 'the children are our future an' all, but the champo is unforgiving. The annoying thing is, we face a run of winnable games with an absolutely decimated squad.

The cup is what it is. We'll likely get schooled by Villa and possibly Chelsea also, but with a home tie first, get the first goal...I'm not without hope about this tie at all. They are not what they were. I think Nkunku will be good for them, and Palmer will go the the Euros for England. They have some top quality for sure - you should have for a £1 billion spend or whatever it is - but they can be got at too. It's not like the days of Terry/Cole/Lampard/Drogba where you just knew they would win.

We are capable of dropping points with or without the cup games, it’s part of our make up this season. Just enjoy the cup run.

Hadn't considered that. We would be in Europe if we won, clearly. What if we got to the final but lost to Liverpool who then got in the Champions League? Does it go to us or the next highest Premier League team?
I've answered my own question via google. We have to win it to qualify for Europe

Said it before i'll say it again 1991/92 we just came up short against Giggs and co at Old Trafford made the 5th round of the FA Cup (albeit got a beating at Ayresome off Darren Anderton and Guy Whittingham) and achieved automatic promotion to put the icing on a very good roller coaster season with a limited squad (dont think we had too many injuries back then apart from Falconer)

At least then we had Slaven/Wilkinson/Payton with Ripley and Hendrie supplying the goal chances (and not forgetting Willie Falconer's goals too)

The Eurpean place was taken away a while ago, may well be the same for the FA Cup now too although I think Hull qualified for Europe the season they lost to Arsenal

I was joking mate. I'm not even fussed about being in the VAR league! (Happy to win a VAR cup tho ;) ).

Apparently the winners now get a place in the Europa Conference League play-offs, but if the winners qualify for Europe via another method, then it goes to the next highest Premier league team who has not qualified for Europe. At least that was the case last season.

In three of our last four promotion seasons we have reached the semi final, been runners up and reached the quarter final of the League Cup which would indicate that a good League cup run has a positive rather than negative impact on league position.
I guess it's also basic psychology that if a team is winning matches, it improves confidence even if it has the side effect of increasing the risk of injuries or tiredness. And confidence is massive (see Ipswich)
