Clough and McMenemy are asked if the North East is the “hotbed” of Football. A brief summary;

Mcmenemy and Clough - M and C
Journalists - Js

C & M: Lack of success.
Js - Most passionate Fans.
M - Lack of investment in infrastructure.
Js - Biggest crowds.
C - managerial issues.
Js - passionate fans in (Pubs and Clubs)
C - stadium size
Js - we get the biggest crowds.
M - Gateshead/Darlo/Hartlepool?
Js- they’re all talking about Newc/Sunder
M -asks to talk Logic / political issues / lack of professionalism
Js - board don’t understand fans passion
M - local media don’t cover real issues
With a great little metaphor for not being able to listen.
Js - *interupts* that’s unfair (hahaha ironic)
C - do you genuinely believe this is a hotbed of football with your lack of success?
Js - yes that’s why we get upset, people care more about football here, Column inches.
C - how do you rate yourself against Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham
Js - yes we have better support

Clough - then shuts them down with stats about Villas attendance being way higher and they’re in Division 3, and a whole host other amazing Clough quotes.

The Journalist finishes with Newcastle and Sunderland have the best crowds.

I wonder where I’ve heard all this before! Hahahahaha…

And nothing has changed!

Its funny because the big London clubs, and the big clubs from the northwest rarely talk about attendances. Its almost as if they've got something better to banter about with each other, like the latest trophies they've won.

But then clubs like Huddersfield, Aston Villa, Sheff Wed, Wolves, Blackburn, and Leeds have all won multiple league titles and the cups too, but they never bang on about attendances either for some reason.

Its obviously a skunk and mackem thing, born out of their insecurities..

It was all very enjoyable until Cloughy totally dismissed our fans.

I always thought the phrase 'hotbed of soccer' referred to the number of tpp players originating from the region as opposed to the passion of the fans or success of the clubs.

If you fall into the third or fourth tier all you have to cling on to is attendences.

Sunderland, Sheffield United, Lids and further down the leagues Bradford and Grimsby have been like this in recent times.

@GazBoro Sheffield Wednesday do go on about attendances, especially last season, 40,000 v United in the third tier, if you are exposed to the Sheffield media you hear it all the time. 24 years out of the top division, 34 years without a trophy... lets bring up attendances.

I initially thought that… but I had another a listen today, and it’s more like he’s saying he agrees the attendance in Middlesbrough isn’t as high… I always thought it strange Middlesbrough or Sunderland never tried to get him in!
