I've just watched this movie from 2007 for the 1st time
What a powerful biopic that was
Loved it
Dark humorous the actor Sam Riley was amazingly similar to Curtis
Been exploring the story of the group tonight
Also hadn't realised new order are joy division...! Minus Ian
Some musical facts just pass you by

Anyway fab film RIP young man...despite ot being in 1980 he was suffering

I went to see it at The Arc when it was first released. It wasn't being shown by any of the major cinema chains.

Only four people in the cinema including me and the Mrs.

But yes, a very good film👍

I watched it last week for the second time and thought the same it was brilliant. I do t think paid it.much attention on the firt watch but second time round and "wow" its brilliant.

He was sick a tortured soul and listening to the lyrics it makes much more sense now. Add in his epilepsy and the passing of the young lass he placed into work added to his mental anguish

Genuinely not having a go, but find it weird that even now people could know so little about Joy Division. Probably an age thing, but I'd love to be able to discover them all over again.
And what's definitely an age thing is me using the phrase "even now" partly in response to a comment someone made about something that happened 17 years ago...

Sam Riley hasn’t really topped that performance. He was the lead in the truly awful remake of Brighton Rock

I always think Love Will Tear Us Apart encapsulates Ian Curtis. It’s a brilliant song musically with haunting lyrics that fit the music, but seem so out of place too. It’s probably a bit like he felt with life.

One thing I could never understand about this movie is that he says he hates Bowie but has a Bowie poster on the wall in his house.

I can recommend a few books if you want to follow it up from JD to NO;

Unknown pleasures, Substance - Peter Hook
Chapter & verse - Bernard Sumner
Fast Forward - Stephen Morris.

Spent my Covid months reading them and listening to most of the albums. Sumners collaboration with Johnny Marr on Electronic and Hooky with Monaco.

They‘ve certainly had a more eventful life than me!

Back in 1979/80 Joy Division were the band for music trendy six formers/students who regualrly listened to John Peel late night Radio 1. Being a Northern band and a touch post-punk ticked boxes for me too.

One of their album covers was a bit dodgy with the charcoal drawing of the Nazi Drummer Boy, but it was interesting to a bit of history buff like me.

I didn't know about Ian Curtis medical issues until he died.

Watching the film Control I can see they were from my background.

Also Touching from a Distance written by Ian's wife Deborah. The book was used as a reference for the film which incidentally was co-produced by Deborah.

That was 24 Hour Party People.

Which was barely about Joy Division and pretty much skipped over Ian's personal life.

Control is a great film. Powerful performances by Sam Riley and Samantha Morton, and the fact the actors learned to actually play the songs adds to the "raw" sound JD had in the early days.

Another fact some people might know is the director, Anton Corbijn was a regular photographer of the band and directed the music video for Atmosphere

While this is a great book, you should remember while reading it that it is incredibly one sided. Deborah was often excluded from JD rehearsals and performances and only found out about a lot of the things that happened in the book well after the fact.
