The media vs Raheem Sterling

It would be absolutely brilliant if he scored the winner on Sunday, or - even better - a hat trick. He gets a lot of unwarranted stick. He's not perfect, he gives the ball away sometimes and his finishing isn't always reliable, but he gets the blood pumping and scares the ***** out of opposition defenders.

Not sure why some people are jumping straight to racism as motivation. Look at the crap Beckham had to put up with.

Sterling seems like a lovely bloke good luck to him. He seems level headed enough to ignore bad press.
Let's be fair just about every athlete gets scrutinised [wrongly or rightly] at some point in their career, you look at Mike Tyson as a perfect example and the troubles he went through trying to lead his life as a prize fighter. Maybe it's the rags to riches theme on overload with the media that seems to focus in on black athletes in general -- but there seems to be a definite reoccurrence of the narrative of how the media seems to attack black athletes.

I have no idea if this is true or not. There is probably a study somewhere looking at this I suspect.

Don't think I have read a single bad thing about him since before the last world cup where it blew up over the gun tattoo.

To be fair, there’s people from all over the entertainment world that have been the target of media abuse bordering on criminality at times. People of all colours. I mean, Caroline Flack basically killed herself over it.

it’s hard to say the targeting of Sterling was racially motivated because there’s plenty of other black England players that never got targeting like he did.

I think there’s a lot of bitter and jealous people in this country they don’t like to see young successful people who are not ashamed of their success and proud of it. being a young successful black guy also rubs some people the wrong way too though, no doubt. I believe it pretty much started when pics of his house with a barbers inside it was put online, or something like that.

Anyway his story of where he come from to where is now should be an inspiration for anyone. He has every right to be proud of it. Seems a good lad who just wants to look after his family.

some sections of the media and public are just abhorrent, especially online , and that’s why you have TV presenters killing themselves, or a young successful footballer that probably still has some doubts about just being himself over fears of further abuse.

Ever read the comments sections on newspaper sites or Twitter? I wouldn’t advise it. Yesterday they were slaughtering the 10 year old kid that got Mason Mount’s shirt just because she comes from a bit of money. Grown adults ripping into a 10 year old girl. That’s really what you’re dealing with.
I like Twitter for keeping up to date on stuff I like to take an interest in, but you're right about the comments. Some people are just twisted and give people abuse for anything. Social Media has provided a conduit for people to become really angry at everything.
