Steve Bruce smashed in plenty of pens for Man Utd!


Greenwood might not be a striker, but he’s probably the cleanest striker of a ball we have

I would have been a lot more angry at Greenwood if the score had have been 0-0 but in fairness the game was won.

There was a Slaven and Wilkinson one against Ipswich too. It creates extra pressure. Greenwood should be fined for it

The best penalty takers should take them, whether a striker or not.

It doesn't matter if they are striker or not, the best penalty taker takes them eg Leadbitter

Obviously correct, there's been some great penalty takers over the years who were defenders (never mind midfielders) . Someone has already mentioned Steve Bruce, but also David Usworth, Leighton Baines, Julian Dicks, Ian Harte, Dennis Irwin, Fernando Hierro, Sergio Ramos. Even a couple of south American keepers (Chilavert?).

And some strikers who weren't great at them. Don't think Owen was the best was he? Andy Cole never liked taking them.

Obviously on average a striker should be better at them, but doesn't always follow. A lot of strikers are outstanding instinctive finishers. Give them time to think however......

If I was a striker I'd be mad for it though. I don't think Akpom was the best at them, never massively convinced with his technique, but his confidence was high and he was desperate for goals. As the best strikers are.

I'd expect Forss to take them if he's on. Coolest, most clinical finisher we have.

Normally that will be a striker, but if someone else has the composure to take them sobeit. On another thread ELL was described as an instinctive finisher, but less effective when he has time to think. A pen is the latter isn't it?

Deano was petty good for us. I think McNair has taken a few too and not missed.

If player x is best at it, I'm giving him the ball regardless of position, though I probably draw the line at keepers taking them.

There's some semantics at work here! You know fine well both are strikers by trade.

For the record the penalty taker list should be well defined and known pre-game. Arguing about who takes the penalty when it's given only adds unnecessary pressure.
