The Queen is not well ☹️ Edit - RIP Queen Elizabeth II

I’m no fan of the monarchy and have been very vocal about it in the past. So instead of voicing my disapproval, I’ll just keep quiet.

That’s how every anti-monarchist should carry on at the moment.
Absolutely agree. I notice that the BBC newsreaders are now wearing black ties. I suspect that the announcement is not far off, the family will gather first and then we will hear the news. My guess is that she has already left us.

Oh and point of pedantry it will be "Operation Unicorn" that is put into place which is the plan for the Queen dying in Scotland.

Rupert Murdich et al hate Charles
and the monarchy. They reckon William is more biddable

I think your right or close to it

I'm genuinely sorry for your loss 1finny, but your comment is crass and absolutely beneath you.
Crass and beneath him? His mother has just passed and he's not especially enamoured with the level of faux grief levelled at one of the most privileged people in modern history.

I find your response to be considerably crass. As I'm sure you will this post.

She has maintained the image for them for sure, she's needed to. I wonder if they'll eat themselves in the vacuum.

The fact is none of us have lived through anything like this before. But it’s going to be huge.

It’s truly global
It is, but it shouldn't be. I'm a republican, but I can distinguish between the person and the role. Some people will feel upset, and that is their prerogative, She has been a periphery figure throughout my life, so I get it. People will feel upset, emotions will be high, royalists will be unyielding in their defence of the crown, and republicans will be unyielding in why its a negative that enables the continuation of nobility.

But when it happens it's also a bookend to an era and should be the start of grown up discussions about the need, costs and benefits of a royal family and if it has a place in a new modern Britain, if it's time to turn our back on the arcane, corrupt, secretive and massively influential entity that is royalty, that underpins the elite old money of this country.

I'll give it 72 hours for people to absorb the news, when it happens, and it seems it will. I will respect those feeling of loss, then it's time to start the serious debates about how this country moves forwards as a proper, democracy built on meritocracy not aristocracy.

The English Civil War was not a revolution or a class war but a regional war.
The north was Royalist.
I understand the republicanism on here. But not that of Presidents like Trump & Putin.

There are good presidents out there, but the key is a proper, robust written constitution that limits the powers of the corrupt presidents......otherwise you end up with a scenario where they can act grossly with absolute impunity, rather like royals can and have at times.

not to out pedant you but it's both unicorn and london bridge

Makes me sad.

An absolute bedrock of stability and dignity in an extraordinary period of history and an extraordinary life for her. What a cultural shift it would be for us all not to have Queen Elizabeth II around. I mean she’s been on every coin since long before my parents were born.

There’s a time and a place for discussion about the politics and point of it all, and I’m not a diehard royalist. But she’s a big part of all of our identities as British people and couldn’t have more respect for the woman, a remarkable person and life.

Thoughts are with her family tbh.
As you have mentioned it -
Dignity? Really, happily entertaining heads of state known to be barbaric?
She is no part of my Identity whatsoever.

Seems ok to wallow in glorification but to question it is deemed to be out of order.

An old lady is dying - that’s sad but it happens day in day out.
Some die of hunger and poverty btw
