The Reckoning - BBC Drama on Savile

I’ve watched three episodes so far.

I’ll always remember being at uni where I studied journalism, just after it all started coming out and my lecturer was telling me about the time she interviewed him when she was at the News of the World. She showed us the photo she had to get with him as part of the piece, telling us how uneasy he made her feel as they all basically *knew*.

But stand up comedy isn't really evidence for the police is it? This is the problem. Lots of people were making jokes about it or throw away comments, based on hearsay, but no one was actually reporting him to the police with hard evidence. This is how he got away with it all. They were comments that they couldn't be sure weren't libellous, hence why they never helped form a case for formal charges. Once they were brought against Rolf Harris, Stuart Hall and whoever else, justice was done.
The joke was that he was a peadophile rapist immune from prosecution.

Must have taken some advice seriously. Page not taking a minor on tour in the states. There’s a federal law. Transporting a minor (18) across state lines for sexual purposes.
$250,000 fine and 10yrs to life.

In may real life TV dramas they don’t actually film in the actual locations. It’s dramatic licence. There are examples in the Long Shadow where they utilised different West Yorkshire locations to represent the actual murder sites.
The Fred West Tv drama Appropriate Adult wasn’t set in Gloucester but Wythenshaw Manchester.

The episode tonight ran Savile’s relationship with Thatcher and how she fought for his knighthood despite the reservations of the then Cabinet Secretary. She gave him his knighthood in her resignation honours list. Incredible manipulation of people through charity work.

I’m watching it now

Yes good to see the link between Maggie and him was so prevalent

After Saville's death and it all coming out, the local CPS looked again at a number of historic allegations (perpetrated by non-celebrities) and several cases were brought to court which really should have been prosecuted in the first place. The culture prior to that had been to look for reasons not to charge - so it wasn't solely a case of a celebrity having friends in high places. No doubt that was part of the story though.

I was wondering if that was the REAL chair at the end as the bbc would still have it I’d assume.

It did look like it.
