The ref on Saturday

I’ve just remembered the incident on Sunday where their lad got treatment but the ref didn’t make him leave the field after getting treatment. A couple of our lads pointed it out to him but he completely ignored them. So, so poor from him. Can you imagine the trouble in a game with something riding on it and he scores from the free kick. They really don’t help themselves sometimes.

Watford commentators said straight away that he didn’t need to leave the field as Azaz was booked, so they knew the rules.

Wasn’t aware of it myself but there you go.

Exceptions to the requirement to leave the field of play are only when:
  • a goalkeeper is injured
  • a goalkeeper and an outfield player have collided and need attention
  • players from the same team have collided and need attention
  • a severe injury has occurred
  • a player is injured as the result of a physical offence for which the opponent is cautioned or sent off (e.g. reckless or serious foul challenge), if the assessment/treatment is completed quickly
There are a few more exceptions too, I just stopped at the rule in question.

It has been the rule for a while now (maybe 10 years?). It is amazing how football fans are convinced that all referees are rubbish (don't know what they are doing etc), when a lot of us don't know the rules. I had to quietly explain it to some rather excited West Stand goers that they were making fools of themselves! It sounded like the vast majority didn't have a clue either!

I honestly didn't know and I like to think I know a bit about football 🤷‍♂️

I thought the 30 second rule was introduced this season?

It was Keith Stroud who's the worst ref I've ever seen. He's made terrible decisions against us in the past (sending off Ayala for a great tackle against Norwich - they scored from the free kick to make it 1-1 and then scored the winner against 10 men).

Funilly enough though this season there's been a real change. He's ref'd a couple or 3 of our home games this season and been 4th official for quite a few and I've noticed him on YouTube footage having a laugh with our players. Possibly shows how refs maybe can be influenced in a better way than Mr Warnock previously tried.

What about the time where they had a player down in their own half, continued to attack for a good minute or more, then when we gained possession and looked to break the ref stopped it for the player to get treatment?

This is the bit where football doesn't help itself. What does quickly mean?

It just leads to seemingly arbitrary decision making.
The IFAB website doesn’t state this so the speed of recovery shouldn’t matter.

Also, if a pen is rewarded and the injured player wants to take it then they don’t have to leave the pitch.
