The Steffen conundrum

What on earth do you do with a keeper like Steffen?

His at times lackadaisical ball distribution from the back, playing himself and others into trouble, his wild flapping attempts at corners that get no where near the ball, etc etc is so infuriating.

Last night for their goal, he seemed more interested in pushing the Sheff Utd player out of the way, that he wandered out of position and couldn't get near the weak header ( mind, he was not alone in getting no where near it)

But, jesus wept, he is a hell of a shot stopper and seems to be top drawer in 1 on 1 situations.

Will he win us more points than he loses us?

I think on the balance of things, he brings much more to the team than he costs us.

I felt he learnt from his mistake from the goal, and after that he did well with the throws.
His shot stopping is very good. Always seems to have his arm, neck, leg in the right place but that also is part of having a giant frame.
He's good with his feet but yeah at times he just seems so laid back and it has cost him/us more than once.
I trust Carrick and the fact he's sticking with him, tells me that he gives more to us than he takes away

He was trying to create a bit of space for himself to come and punch if needed, the issue for me is that we shouldn't allow 3 opposition players to crowd around our keeper unopposed. We need to protect the keeper, with a man between attack and keeper, that then allows Steffen the space to come and punch

I agree, and definitely think that he is improving. Last night he mixed up his distribution, with more long kicks and throws than normal. He made some good, brave saves last night.

I would keep him if we could, but I don't think we could afford him. I wouldn't break the bank to keep him.

This.

He was mixing up his distribution last night because that was the plan not that he had some personal epiphany. FFS
Exactly. He's been asked to play a particular way and has made some errors with it, understandably, whilst at times showing exceptional range of passing. Most of the time he's been good, and a lot of the groans you hear are more about fans not being able to handle us playing it out from the back

I am not sure anyone is slatign him for any thing other than the moments he resembles Jason Statham as a GK in Mean Machine and wanders off the plot.

He Still makes me nervous he gets lost when he comes to catch a ball from a corner he doesnt think when he kicks out the ball anyone on here who thinks he would make his way into the city team is dreaming the sooner he goes home the better he will cost us in the playoffs & then who on here will still be backing him.
