"Please! Please come support [the boys] and be loud and boost that energy and help us try and get the result we want!" [Michael Carrick].

It's hard to believe, but the game today [Saturday], could be the "biggest" we play all season. In terms of possibilities, after three excellent wins, with just five points between us and a play-off spot, we could be heading into unchartered territory! We haven't been above ninth in the Championship all season, but from almost accepting the season was over after that run of games before Norwich, we now face a real chance of scrapping for a place in the play-offs! For the first time all season, Carrick has basically had the luxury of choosing the same team, with key players back in the frame. That's not to suggest those who were filling-in the gaps weren't capable, but at times we had square pegs in round holes and asking players to operate in areas they had never played before.
1710527609066.png
For senior players such as Jonny Howson, Dael Fry, Paddy McNair and Matt Clarke, this isn't something new. But the younger players, and those here on loan, have had to adapt their game very quickly, which isn't any easy thing to do. All credit to them. The departure of "Big Tree" and Morgan Rogers was something the team have dealt with, and we don't appear to have missed them [?].

Let's not forget, we have Tommy Smith and Darragh Leniham in recovery, but we also have Isaiah Jones and Josh Coburn waiting in the wings. Carrick is making sure their recovery is managed properly, and he said in the Media Conference before Birmingham, he wasn't just going to throw players back into the mix if he didn't think they were ready.

1710527747492.png

Michael Carrick, at his most recent media conference, said the "boys" were feeling "good" after the Birmingham victory, pointing out the last three games were all "tough" and we did well to come out on top in each of them. Against Birmingham, Carrick reflected:

I thought we looked pretty solid all in all. I think all the way through the game really and as it was a real Collective effort [from] the team. [The] boys that started the boys that came off the bench and finished the game, I think everyone played the part. It's always a tough place to go, I've never found it easy going there, as well as QPR. So they're similar games in many ways, and the boys found a way to get through it and get the right result.

[It wasnt pretty, but the travelling red army had plenty to cheer about at the final whistle]

The momentum certainly appears to have sustained itself after that win against Norwich. We could have scored more, but the three which sealed it now appear to have become a statement of intent and a platform, even at this late stage, to mount a serious challenge for the play-off places. Michael Carrick won't be phased and always repeats the same answer to reporters trying to prize open what "really" might be in his thinking:

I think you got to take a balanced View and kind of keep level in some ways you know and keep striving to improve at the moment. We've had a little string of wins and that's something we need to build on.

It's about winning games and being consistent and putting a run together we said that for a long time now and everything's in front of us, it's up to us to play well enough to get the results to see where we can end up.

Blackburn Rovers

1710531469321.png
[John Eustace has been in Manager at Blackburn since the start of February]

Since we last played them at Ewood Park, they have a new Manager in John Eustace. An experienced Manager, who was getting a good tune out of our last opponents, Birmingham City, before he got the sack. At Blackburn, it's not been easy for him. They have become "draw specialists", with six draws and two defeats in Eustace eight games in charge. Their last defeat was against Swansea [Away] on 2nd March and before that at St Andrews [1-0]. Last time out, they were reduced to ten men and held on for a 1-1 draw against Plymouth at Ewood.

1710529932474.png
Under John Eustace he has tightened up the defence, which has been a big problem for Rovers all season. They have the second-worst defence in the Championship [conceded 64 in 37 games], after Rotherham [-77]. Just below them are Huddersfield and Plymouth, who have both let 61 league goals into the back of their net!

But Carrick isn't fooled by their lowly position [18th in the table and three points off the third relegation spot]:

I know it's been said a lot like [with] every Club in the championship, actually a pretty good team, and yet the lead table maybe wouldn't suggest that. But experience tells you nothing's easy. I take that with a pinch of Salt. I think they are a good team and, watching out, they haven't had a run that probably they'd like, in terms of wins, but watching their games and the results: every game has been really, really tight, and they're dangerous. The front three especially, whoever plays there they were a real threat so, as I said .....results don't necessarily tell you the whole story, especially in this league. So we won't be taking that for granted at all, and we know that it's um it's going to be a really tough game I seem to say the same things every week.

Championship Top Scorer - Sammie Szmodics
1710528223330.png
The biggest threat for Boro comes from Sammie Szmodics, a forward who is the Championship's Top Goalscorer. This season, he has played 39 games in all competitions, scored 27 goals and made 3 assists! He signed for them in the summer of 2022, but has really found his scoring boots this season. [This seasons "Chuba Akpom" ??] It's his goals which have kept Rovers from cuddling up with Rotherham at the bottom of the table. In the league, he's netted 21 goals, three more than Adam Armstrong of Southampton [18 goals + 11 assists!] and Morgan Whittaker of Plymouth [18 goals + 7 assists]. He's certainly going to one to stop if we are going to get the three points we need. Not understating Szmodic`s ability and skills, carrick noted:

Obviously, Szmodic is having a terrific season in terms of goals and his finishes, and scores some really good goals with his movement. So of course it's something we need to be aware of. We've got something to build on [and] we need to keep doing the right things and defending well as a team and trying to build on the performance from the last few games.

The key for us is marshalling our defence, and it's fair to say, in the last three games, that none of those who have started in defence have hardly put a foot wrong. Personally, I think Paddy McNair deserves a lot more praise than he sometimes receives, and it's been good watching him put in a good shift.

[Paddy McNair has been a stalwart for Boro since he arrived from Sunderland. He becomes a free agent in the summer]

Play-Offs?

[Yerjokinarnya ]

Since about day one, reporters have asked Michael Carrick the same series of questions about where he wants the team to finish in the league, whether he fears relegation or whether we will end up in the play-offs. Carrick isn't one to speculate and waste his time guessing, at least not in front of the camera's, but he has given away over the season that he is perfectly aware of the table and Boro`s opportunities to climb the ladder [even though he says he doesn't look!]:

We don't think about the other teams too much.......... I think we can only play the games in front of us, but certainly on Tuesday, with us being the only game, there was a chance of making a bit of a jump. It's not something we'll focus on too much..... going into the game, but it definitely plays a part, so it still comes down to us picking up enough points between now and the end of the season. For us to kind of [be] where we want to be, whoever plays whenever they play, that's really not our concern. But it would be nice to go into the [International] break with another good result, and come out of it for the final push. [Towards the play-offs, Michael?].

Are The Fans Going to Turn Up?
1710528679975.png
Reporters ask some bluddy daft questions, but it gave Michael the opportunity to issue the Clarion call for the faithful to the hallowed shrine which is The Riverside:

1710530627655.png

Yeah! Hopefully. [we need] all the help we can get, you know: the energy in the stadium the atmosphere in the stadium, [with] all the encouragement and support the boys [they] really feed off it. Please! Please come support [the boys] and be loud and boost that energy and help us try and get the result we want!

Come on Boro!

Just one game at a time [you know].......fingers crossed!

Aynsley Pears is back in contention to feature against Middlesbrough this week after overcoming concussion that kept him out of the last two Sky Bet Championship encounters.

[Edited]

The 25-year-old, who came through the ranks at Boro, missed the back-to-back home clashes against Millwall and Plymouth Argyle with a head injury sustained in training prior to the game against the Lions.

His absence meant Leo Wahlstedt was called upon as the last line of defence, with the boss now needing to make a call on whether to stick with the Swede at the Riverside Stadium or to put Pears back in between the sticks.

Elsewhere, Hayden Carter is closing in on a return to first-team training, which will provide Eustace with a huge boost, but the trip to Teesside is expected to come too soon for Sondre Tronstad, with the Norwegian enforcer still yet to full recover from an ankle issue.

Kyle McFadzean is suspended for the match against Michael Carrick’s men, whilst Joe Rankin-Costello, Sam Barnes, John Fleck and Harry Leonard all remain sidelined.

“Squad-wise, we’ve had to assess one or two this week,” Eustace began when discussing his options with RoversTV.

“The schedule has been hectic and there’s been a couple off their feet.

“Aynsley was concussed a little bit last week, but he’s trained this week and we’ll see how he is for the weekend.

“We have Hedgey [Ryan Hedges] back in after playing last week and he’s had a good week of training, which has been a big plus.

“Sonny [Tronstad] is still struggling a little bit and I don’t think he’ll be available for the weekend.

“Hayden Carter’s doing really well and he might join in (training) today for the first time in a long time, which is a massive plus because I’m a real big fan of Hayden," he added.

“Everyone’s been pushing for a start, the substitutions have made a big difference in recent games and we have a few options that we’ll look at.
“We’re slowly getting there and I hope everyone will be back fit and that we’ll have a full squad after the international break.”

We've all got to be patient tomorrow. They'll sit deep and hope to catch us on the break so we probably won't go gung-ho at first. I think it might be a tight game with a single goal deciding it. Hopefully for us!

Hopefully no Sam Gallagher. He's got 3 goals this season. Turns into prime Shearer against us😂

I don't think it will be remotely 'easy'. We will have to be patient and grind out another result. Just hope we start positively and go ahead. Sick of finding even more ridiculous ways to concede at home.

An article taken from the Lancashire Advertiser gives us some clues about John Eustace team selection :

Blackburn defender talked up as Eustace considers options

John Eustace kept his cards close to his chest about a potential Blackburn Rovers defensive reshuffle with Kyle McFadzean suspended this week.

The Rovers head coach has named the same back three in the last six matches but will be forced into a change this weekend with McFadzean serving a one-match ban for his red card against Plymouth Argyle.

Connor O'Riordan
and Billy Koumetio are on standby, with Harry Pickering and Ben Chrisene also capable of slotting in as a third centre-back. That could open the door for Ryan Hedges to start.

Eustace gave little away as to whether Rovers might go with a back four to add an extra attacker or whether he'll stick with the 5-2-3 shape that he's favoured so far.

On O'Riordan specifically, the Rovers boss would have no qualms about throwing him in for his first Championship start with minutes limited since his mid-season switch from Crewe Alexandra.

"We can do (change shape). We have two or three really good centre-halves who are waiting in the wings to step in. We have some very good options," he said.

"The club wouldn't have signed him if they didn't think he could have a big future. I've seen enough in training in the last three or four weeks to say he's a very talented young player with a big future.

"We have to protect some of the younger players in terms of the time of the season and where we are at. It's important we don't put too much pressure on them to come in and perform.

"It's been a pleasure working with him until now. When you sign any player, it's about the development of themselves and to make the club better.

"It doesn't matter how old they are or where they have come from. The club have done their homework on the players and I believe Connor will have a big future at this club. There is no rush for that to happen."
1710577813383.png
Rovers have had their first free week on the training ground since Eustace came in after a very hectic run of matches. They've had some time to work on things on and off the ball, but also to get some recovery time for those who have been battling through knocks. After no wins in seven Championship matches under Eustace, fans are desperate for a victory to ease their fears of relegation to League One.

"I think it's great for the lads to get a bit of a break, the effort they have put in," Eustace said.

"We have spoken about how a lot of the players have come back from injury and had to play three, four, five games in a row. That is full credit to them, the commitment and the desire is there to see.

"It's important to get the balance right. It's important to have a good few days on the training pitch but also three or four of the boys have needed rest and quite rightly so.

"It's been a really good week. We have to take each game as it comes and keep picking points up. There are a lot of teams that are there or thereabouts.

"We take each game as it comes, I won't put a magic number. We have taken five points, or eight points if you consider the influence we had on Stoke counted for anything.

"We have to look positive on anything, it's very positive that the whole club is positive. The fans, the players, the media, the staff. Everyone, let's look forward.

"We have lost twice in eight which is a big achievement after coming with eight defeats in 11. We have plenty of positives to take from it, but we're taking each game as it comes and be positives."

1710577891922.png
Rovers are facing Middlesbrough at the wrong time. Their season appeared to be over after a poor run of form.
However, three wins in a row, including a 1-0 victory at Birmingham City in midweek, has reinvigorated their hopes of a late push into the play-off places.

"They're in good form, they have won their last three games which is understandable with the size and quality of the squad they have got," Eustace added.

"They have an excellent team, and they're coached very well. It's a game that we're looking forward to. We will go full of confidence after another battling performance on Saturday.

"We'll see where it takes us. It's about winning games, believing in the process. I think we've made good strides since we came in.

"We had to turn defeats into draws and now we have to turn them into victories. We believe in what we're doing, the players have had a great week's training and we'll be ready.

"That's the Championship, it is what it's all about. Being level-headed, don't get too carried away with the highs or the lows."

I will be very surprised if we don't win today.

Really? 😂

How long have you followed Boro?

We’ve a real chance to do good for ourselves here and we’re favourites. They’re on the rocks, we’re at home and in good form.

It’s a nailed on 6 - 0 to Blackburn this. Sam Gallagher to score an overhead kick.
