Its that time again>>>>>>>>>>
No one predicted in Chuba Akpom, Boro would have the highest League Scorer in the Championship by Christmas. But we`ve seen the rebirth of a player who was nearly thrown out the door in the summer. Earlier in the season, some of us speculated whether spending millions££££`s on a "proven" striker was the answer to our scoring drought? In front of our own eyes we didnt realise we had a diamond - with the right handling and coaching - who has flourished and is having the time of his life. Whilst reporters write reams about the likes of Ben brereton-Diaz, Victor Gyokeres and Jay Rodrigues, our Chuba has quietly crept into the picture: no banner headlines. No swank. Just a new found consistency and self - confidence and a good team around him.
What better way to top off a good first-half of the season than with a hat-trick at home on Boxing Day! Michael Carrick said in his most recent media conference, that he knew nothing of Chuba`s history before he arrived at the Riversaide about two months ago. What he [Carrick] did say, was that his instincts and experience identified a player with the skills, the correct mentality, dedication, the right attitude and perseverence, to make the grade. Chuba has a slightly different role - where he adds a lot more to the team than being "striker". His midfield play, feeding the ball to others, coming into holes in opposition defences and bringing the ball from places like the half-way line! Hes creating his own goals - saying [watch me! I`l get this one!]. Hes becoming a menace to opposition defences. He also pulls players out wide - giving us more space to exploit.
In Blackburn, they have Ben Brereton-Diaz. Hes on 9 goals for the season, but is 5th in the current Championship top scorers. Chuba looked humbled when he received the match ball for his hat-trick on Boxing Day. But lets hope its the first of many this season. Bring on "Big Ben" andBlackburn Rovers!
Up The Mighty Boro!
