Boro v Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

Michael Carrick made no bones about the Leicester victory a fortnight ago. In his Media Conference on Thursday, he described the game against Bristol City is even more important than that against the Foxes. Momentum is important and most of the players have had time to relax and recuperate, but now its time to get back into gear and push on:

For me, this game`s bigger than the Leicester game: there`s a natural buzz and a natural feeling around the Leicester game – top of the league and coming down from the Premier League. I think there was a good feeling in the stadium that it was a big game. For us, this is an even bigger game going down to Bristol: new Manager, first game at home. With total respect for Bristol its one that you can take your eye off the back of Leicester, because everyone is still enjoying Leicester. But that`s done and this challenge is even bigger for us, so we`re looking forward to it and we`re ready for that. We [will] certainly use the energy and the confidence that we`ve gained over recent weeks.

1700856470148.png
One concern is that Boro have key injuries to McGree, Forss and Lenihan, with the latter likely to be out for the season. Carrick is assured that Forss and McGree are possibly "weeks" away from recovery, but he has faith in the squad and wont push either of them until they are ready. He stressed that their presence around the place is still important: not just on the training ground. Its vital for Carrick to maintain that team spirit and focus on the next challenge.

Christmas and New Year are frequently mentioned as "busy" periods, with a relentless schedule jig-sawed into cup games - particularly as we have to place Port Vale in the League Cup and the FA Cup games are just around the corner. Carrick isnt unduly phased by the commitments over the coming months as much as the reporters in the room. In response to a question about whether he had a message for the players he answered in his usual fashion, with a smile:

Just keep going. Keep improving. Lets not get too carried away with whats coming up. I think [one] game at a time...like we`ve done ever since I got here. What`s next? What can we control? Game-by-game you know. There`s a balance now for us [to] obviously manage the squad. Its busy, but [managing the squad] is possible, its no big deal really. The boys are strong, they`re looking forward to playing games, so the more games the better for me.

1700853785962.png
His faith in our ability to face up to the rest of the season and the challenges it will bring hasnt wavered. He commented that the players, even during our poor start to the season, kept belief and faith in their ability to overcome the issues and improve results and their performances - individually and collectively. Carrick is more impressed with the boys ability to stay on track, never waver and keep believing. A point Carrick made, which they ultimately share with the approach of him and his staff. He was pressed on Engel`s improvement, and again repeated much of what he`s said before:
1700853946550.jpeg
I`ve been hugely impressed. I wouldnt say I`m surprised because knowing him as a player, of his drive and determination, you could say that from the start as well. Sometimes that little set-back, that little challenge kind of makes you in the end. Delighted for the way he`s playing….its great to see. Its what we expected, what we knew he was capable of and there`s still loads more to come.

Carrick was also pressed on the recent success of Hayden Hackney with the England U21`s. There was no doubt that Hayden`s level-headedness and character was a credit to both him and his family. The way he summed him up was "no fuss". He gets on with the job and is "a dream to work with".

1700853887809.png
In the New Year, with the National Team commitments, Boro are likely to face a drought of available keepers, but he`s not going to pull back any of our keepers to cover, who are out on loan. There was no doubt in his mind of the potential situation and made it quite clear the Coaches and the club are well aware of the situation. Its all about forward planning for Carrick and his staff. A loan keeper is one of the options but nothing more than that:

Of course, its what`s best for us and for the team and what we need, but there`s a big element of each situation and its not pulling everyone back, just cuz we need them back here. They`ve got their own kind of development as well to think about, so its not just a straight-forward `lets get every goalkeeper back that we`ve got`. There`s an awful lot goes into that and we`ll try and make the best for everyone anyway.

We shouldnt forget either that Paddy McNair wore the Captain`s Armband for Northern Irelands match against Denmark and Rav van den Berg made an appearance for the Netherlands U21 team.

1700854152073.png

So what of Bristol City and new Manager Liam Manning? Carrick and he did their pro-licences together and it`ll be time to catch up, but not much more. Carrick is aware that with Manning only recently taking charge [7th November] we dont really know much about his style and how much he wil have effected players approach during the International break. There is no doubt that our players can cope with whatever Bristol throw at us. He acknowledged that Manning is a good Manager and said he deserves the Job at Ashton Gate.

Its nearly Christmas time [a month away?] and the same questions crop up every year: does our position around Christmas and New Year have any significance for where we are going to end up on the last day of the season? Predictably, its about taking every game at a time and keeping our ears and eyes on the next challenge, whilst noise from Media, pundits, commentators and reporters continues outside. Did the league position at Christmas have any significance:

Maybe. Even then, there`s a fair stretch between then and the end of the season. I would`nt necessarily say there`s a certain point in the season where you kind of look at the table and think `alright that`s where we are`. Its just keep winning games as much as you can, picking up points if you cant win games and then it will work itself out. I`m not one for kind of setting a target, I`m not one for looking at the [league] table at a certain time. It is what it is. You got to get through the season, so just appreciate it and enjoy the challenge week be week really.

He`s certainly playing his cards close to his chest when asked about what may or may not happen during the January Transfer Window: "There`s always a surprise and always a little change along the line" he commented, with a wry smile.

Today its a Bristol City team which drew against QPR last time out and have some key players out injured. That shouldnt make us complacent and it will be interesting to see who is on the starting block on Saturday.

Carrick concluded:
I`m not exactly sure where we are in the league, but got a rough idea, because I don’t pay much attention at this point. Its about winning games you know and seeing where that takes us. There`s some good teams in the league. I think we know we`ve came up against some and we`ll come up against some in the next few weeks, so there`s always new challenges ahead.

Another win and we can easily start moving up that greasy pole, which is the Championship Table.

Come On Boro!

Thanks Roofie! An interesting and informative read as always.

Liam Manning

Signed on as the New Coach of Bristol City, just two days after November 5th. He`s joined the latest crop of young Managers in the EFL. Only 38, he began his coaching career at West Ham United [U23`s] in 2015. After his departure in 2019 he coached at Lommel SK in Belgium, Milton Keynes Dons and Oxford United. He signed for the “U”s as Head Coach in March 2023 but left less than eight months later to sign for Bristol City on a three year contract. When he took over in March, Oxford were floating around the danger zone in the bottom half of League one, but he turned the ship around in a very short period of time. The Oxford Mail reported he left Oxford in second place, just three points behind leaders Portsmouth.

Player-wise, he began his youth career with home town club Norwich City. He went on to spend a brief period with Ipswich Town, but never made a senior appearance. After dropping into non-league with the likes of Bishop`s Stortford, Wroxham and Ipswich Wanderers he retired from football in 2010.

1700855024835.png

Here`s what he had to say about his move from Oxford United to Bristol City, including comments from Robins Owner John Landsdown:

1700855057958.png

Liam Manning says Bristol City’s “vision” played a key role in his decision to leave Oxford and join the Robins.

The 38-year-old succeeds Nigel Pearson, who was sacked last month after a poor run of results, in the hot seat at Ashton Gate.

Manning gained the Robins’ interest after a strong start to the campaign, with Oxford sitting second in the League One table, only above Wanderers on goal difference.

“This is a terrific opportunity and one that I’m really looking forward to,” he told the club’s official website.

“If you look at the vision of the club and where they want to get to and how they want to get there, I think there is really good fit and alignment with my journey and where I want to get to.

“You want players that you can coach and are moldable and on an upward trajectory in their career.

“I think that brings certain behaviours in terms of drive, intensity and ambition which align with how we want to work.”

Manning took charge at Oxford in March and helped the club avoid relegation to League Two last term.

He oversaw major changes to the squad in the summer, with the likes of Ruben Rodrigues and James Beadle arriving at the Kassam Stadium.

Robins chairman Jon Lansdown added: “Liam is a great fit for the club and the style of play we want.

“He has a very detailed approach to coaching, improving players and getting the best out of them, as his record at MK Dons and Oxford United shows, while he has valuable experience within the City Group and in Belgium.

“As soon as we made the change, Liam was our first choice and we are grateful to Oxford United for the extremely professional way they have approached the departure of someone who was doing a fantastic job for them.

“We are excited about the arrival of Liam and Chris (Hogg) and fulfilling the ambition we all have for the club with this talented and committed group of players.”

Fans Voice - The Robins

"One Team In Bristol"

Selected "thoughts" on tomorrows game from some of the Bristol City faithful. It appears that some fans werent over enthusiastic with their new manager`s appointment and the sacking of Nigel Pearson. There has also been reaction to John Lansdown [the owner] who predicted City to finish in the top six this season! Good luck. After tomorrow.(y)

[Edited]

1700858270986.pngGiving it a miss tomorrow, feel totally deflated by the sacking of Pearson as others have said a new manager/coach generally comes in after a really bad run etc but not the case this time. I wish LM all the best obviously but struggling for enthusiasm at the moment. I would probably take a draw tomorrow but don't see us getting anything at Southampton and Norwich home could be tricky. Nothing about Pearsons sacking and appointment of LM feels right to me. Time will tell I suppose.

1700858358038.pngWe drew with an arguably superior then to now Middlesbrough side and should have won back in April. Sure we've lost Scott but our midfield was James and King that day, Cornick, Weimann, Bell and Wells the 3-1. Pring at CB..unbalanced. To a 3-1 home loss? Oh a tough game sure, while Akpom, Archer, Ramsey gave that star quality Carrick will also have learnt as a manager not least from their disastrous start. Certainly wouldn't be a huge shock if we did lose but we should believe we can get something here.

1700858530462.pngNothing but a win will do as we are a front foot attacking team heading for a top six finish.......... apparently
🤔

1700858666226.pngI think the first home game with an international break to get organised should mean that we see the first impact of a new coaching team. It must be hard for Boro to prepare as they probably have no better idea than we have about our style of play. I would hope that we stop playing Conway up front on his own. If we have 1 up top it has to be Cornick. I hope Wiemann does not start and that we play with a far higher tempo. For me, a draw with an entertaining full on playing style will be enough. Fingers crossed, COYR

1700858817672.pngThink it will be tough but, actually, I think we need to win. We’re 4 points off the play offs… but the sense is we’re just about hanging in there. That gap moves out to 7, 8 points and several more teams above us then we’re basically done and dusted this season IMO.

1700858916484.pngI think we’ll lose by at least a couple. They’re a good side and I think we’re in trouble. I’d snap your hand off for a point.

Interestingly enough my algorithm has predicted a Brsitol victory with few goals. It isn't a strong prediction, nevertheless it surprised me a bit. Bookies have us as favourites by quite some distance. 2.18 v 3.7. I would have thought a 2-1 to boro would be much more likely

They have key players out and are in a period of transition [thats what they call it these days].
No one appeared over the moon about Big Nige getting the push nor mega impressed by John Landsman claiming the new Manager was going to get them into the "top 6". Hopefully, we can turn it on and turn them over.

The Charge of the Boro Brigade starts here........ (y)

Their fans don't seem that optimistic. It's a home game, they should expect to win it.

Crickey! Is that the time?! Time to hit the doss bag (y)
Beat you to bed roofie. By midnight I was in bed watching band of hero's. Don't bother. Vinny Jones played a ww2 pilot. Not very believable, and that wasn't the worst part of the movie.

They struggled to an away 0 - 0 with QPR last time out, first under their new manager. 3 shots registered , just 1 on target . This was with a front 4 of Conway upfront, Mehmeti, Weimann, Sykes. QPR are poss the worst in our div and have not registered a win since err smashing us at our place about 12 games ago, so can't see the new manager boost yet. However , a 2 week break and work with the players, it's the first home game for them and the new coach. I tend to think we are v slow coming back off Intl break especially if an away game. I can't call this at all. We just need to put in some hard graft , get ahead hopefully and let them huff an puff it out.

Since new manager came in they have got rid of Curtis Fleming as well, thought they might have kept him on coaching team.
He is very highly thought of in the game apparently.

Apparently, against QPR Manning was playing a solitary target man up front. QPR fans clapped their players off at the end as if they had won the Cup Final - such is the horror story their season has been so far. For Bristol City fans, more used to Pearsons robust attacking style it hasnt given them hope. But we all know how that can quickly change.
