With Burnley and Boro going neck-an-neck in the form table, its going to be an interesting game for both Managers and both sets of players.
Burnley sit top of the tree with 44 points - 3 above second place Sheffield United and 8 above third place Blackburn Rovers. Burnley are far out in front with goals scored [43] but have conceded 23 [compared to Boro with 27]. Burnley`s Jay Rodrigues is their top scorer with 9 goals in 18 games. However, Boro`s Chuba Akpom has the highest conversion rate per games played than any other player in the Championship top ten scorers! significantly, Burnleys top "assists" man is Josh Brownhill with 5 so far - the same number as Boro`s Ryan Giles!

Burnley like to get in the opposition`s spaces and faces from the off, and they`ve certainly done that this season. They play "possession" football - controlling the game and forcing teams onto the back foot. So far this season they have only lost two League games - against Watford and Sheffield United - both away. It took Burnley time to find some momentum - winning 4, drawing 5 and losing one in their first 10 games. They`ve got 6 clean sheets, in the league, out of 22 games. Their defence is suspect if we can disrupt their midfield and cut the supply to the forwards: they let Sun`lun score 2 in a 4-2 victory back in October. They, more recently, conceded 2 against Rotherham and 5 against Sheffield United. Burnley like to invite opponents to play agressively, countering that with passing football. So its going to be interesting - but "its just another game" [Michael Carrick].

Middlesbrough vs Burnley match report: Emilio Nsue delivers to send Boro top of the table

Emilio Nsue (centre) broke the deadlock when he turned in Adam Forshaw’s cross from close range

The chant started behind Dimi Konstantopoulos’s goal at the Riverside Stadium in the 89th minute, when Queen’s Park Rangers scored. At that point Middlesbrough went top of the Championship.

It has been six and a half years since the club fell through the Premier League trap door. Victory over Burnley here, through Emilio Nsue’s goal early in the second half, was significant enough, opening up an eight-point gap to Sean Dyche’s side, who finished the day in fifth.

It also meant that Aitor Karanka’s side have not conceded a goal on home soil since mid-September, a seven-game run.

They were full value for the victory. In fact, their second-half display should have yielded more than just the solitary strike from Nsue. Stewart Downing, Adam Forshaw and George Friend all had chances to kill off their rivals before a nervy finale.

There had been precious little in the opening 45 minutes to suggest that Middlesbrough’s difficulties in breaking teams down at the Riverside would change.

Karanka had made four changes to his team – one forced through the suspension of striker David Nugent – but it did not alter the likelihood of a goal. Indeed there had been more to write about in the goalless draw against Birmingham, during which Nugent had been shown a red card for raising his hands.

There was not that kind of frustration last night but it was a barren opening, and all the home side had to show for a half of football was two speculative long-range shots from their central midfielder Adam Clayton.

In the 10th minute, Clayton shot narrowly wide of the far post of Tom Heaton’s goal. Just before the half-hour mark he let fly from 20 yards. This time he cleared the bar.

Indeed it was left to Konstantopoulos to provide the only save of the half, in the 37th minute. George Boyd struck his angled shot from the left side of the Middlesbrough penalty area well and it was destined for the bottom corner before Konstantopoulos produced a fine stop to his right.

Earlier, Daniel Ayala did well to block a well-struck shot from David Jones.

Middlesbrough had more drive after the interval, when they looked like a side who believed it was their time to return to the Premier League and, just nine minutes after half-time, they had the lead.

Forshaw did well to get to the byline and when he pulled the ball back, Nsue struck a right-foot finish past Heaton from close range. There should have been more.

Heaton did well to deny Downing from 30 yards, diving at full stretch to his left, and the Burnley goalkeeper was alert soon after to stop Forshaw from distance.

Burnley had only a tame Scott Arfield effort to show in reply and Boro captain Friend almost doubled their lead with 20 minutes left, but Heaton saved his left-foot volley.

Middlesbrough (4-4-2): Konstantopoulos; Kalas, Ayala, Gibson, Friend; Nsue, Forshaw (Adomah, 89), Clayton, Downing; Kike (Stuani, 76), Fabbrini (Leadbitter, 65). Subs not used: Amorebieta, De Pena, Mejias, Zuculini.

Burnley (4-5-1): Heaton; Darikwa (Hennings, 85), Duff, Keane, Mee; Boyd (Kightly, 77), Marney, Barton, Jones (Vokes, 71), Arfield; Gray.Subs not used: Lowton, Taylor, Ward, Mitchell.

Saturday 16th April: Boro 2 Bolton 1. That man again! Jordan Rhodes scored the winner in stoppage time - as the away end erupted into bedlam. What a day and what a result. Note a knackered David Wheater could only watch as the ball went into the back of the net!

The Clarets take on Middlesbrough, who are led by former Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.
[Edited]

Kompany states he is passionate about building a close bond with the Burnley fans.
He said: “There’s always anticipation when we play at Turf Moor.

1671220723812.png
“It’s a full stadium where the fans expect a performance. Maybe it’s not in the same way as other clubs, but they expect it to be electric. If it’s like that, then it doesn’t matter if we win or lose. If it’s electric we will get people behind us, and it will be a tough place to come.

“The support is something we’ve really worked on. It’s not just the results, I don’t believe that. It’s how we’ve conducted ourselves as a club. We’ve tried to transmit the past and the history of the club, and what we do in games. It’s not just the win, it’s also the grinds. In a town like Burnley people get behind you because they feel proud to support you.

“Middlesbrough have got a good squad, and a number of players who, on their day, can do something out of nothing. Their offensive players always play at the top of the Championship, and they have some players with experience as well. That’s why you win games because you have players who can make the difference.

“The key has been not looking at the table too much and trying not to speculate and attempting to control things we can’t. We’ve not been strict or demanding on the things we do control. I don’t know the results, and I can’t promise them.

Born in December 95, the Central Midfielder has been a key component in Burnley`s rise to the top of the tree. He began his football career with Manchester United and then followed an "affair" with Preston North-End before joining Burnley via Bristol City in January 2020. This season he has scored 5 goals and contributed 5 assists.
