>>>>>when we gear up to get to the next stage of the League Cup.

To get past Exeter City and take a step nearer to that Wembley final.

Where we dream of lifting that glittering prize above our heads on the hallowed turf of England`s National Football Stadium.

But Michael Carrick has played in many, many Cup games in his career and knows its not always guaranteed the "big" boys win.....remember that penalty shoot-out where Carrick missed along with some of his team mates and we progressed through to the next round?
Michael was asked about that in his most recent media conference:

[Whopping smile]….I cant remember that! [Everyone laughs]

But this is no easy game. Exeter beat Luton in their last game, which is no easy feat. Exeter deserve respecy for getting this far and when asked if this game presented an "opportunity" to reach the Quarter Final, he replied:

You`ve got to be very careful with that, with over-emphasising the opportunity. Its the next game that`s important: we respect the game, the type of game its going to be and respect the opposition and what they`ve done to get here.

Regardless of stage of competition, who`s left in it, its us against Exeter tomorrow night and that matters. [Its our] performance and earn the right in the game. That`s what`s important to us. Anything after that, then we`ll assess that after the game tomorrow night. We`ll be giving everything to put things in place….to give us a chance to win the game.

Carrick has won enough Domestic and European honours to temper the natural excitement of the players, focus on the game in hand and prevcent players from taking the result as a foregone conclusion. Boro have been away in every round so far. Irregardless of the competition, it takes that little bit extra sometimes, to get the game over the line. It may have seemed "easy" at Bradford, for instance, but they were up for it and had their moments.

Exeter will be ready to face us and will be drilled and prepared. We know we have injuries, but like Carrick said yesterday [Monday], we have the squad and the ability to interchange players and positions. He was asked whether he would "shuffle the pack" for tonights game:

Possibly, but thats the reason we`ve got the squad as well. Its a balance...we managed quite well in the last few rounds of the competition. It carries on. We havent got maybe as many [players] to chose from…...but that`s just how it is. But whatever team...Listen[!], we are going down there to give our best and try and get through for sure.

Whatever happens, with another sell-out crowd, what seems like half of the Riverside are down the South West, either wild-camping or bedding down till after the Plymouth game on Saturday. It going to be a really brilliant atmosphere. Lets hope we get it right and take some courage from Carrick, who said his only memories of Cup Games were......the "Finals". Maybe we could be heading for the impossible dream? If we get there it will be the 20th Anniversary of our brilliant Carling Cup win in Cardiff. Can we do it again?

Starting tonight?

We can do this!

Com On Boro!

Gary Caldwell - Exeter City Manager:

City manager Gary Caldwell says his side will prepare for Tuesday's huge Carabao Cup tie with Middlesbrough just like any other game.

Caldwell's men are on the verge of history with City aiming for the League Cup quarter-finals for the first time in their history, and are buoyed by a positive second half performance against Lincoln City on Saturday.

"There is an opportunity in front of us that we have earned," Gary said.

"This is a big moment for the players to do something that has never been done before but we have a huge task in front of us. We are playing a side who, in my opinion, are even better than the team we played in the last round.

"Middlesbrough are in top top form but the players are ready an excited, and hopefully with a full-house behind us we can go and create history.

"We will prepare the same we do every match and will look at Middlesbrough, look at a game plan to try and go and go through the final details with the players.

"We have to be at our very best."

Grecians Flatten The Hatters:

Match Report: City 1 Luton Town 0

26 September 2023

Demetri Mitchell smashed Exeter City into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup as the Grecians defeated top tier opposition for the first time since 1980.

City’s first appearance in the third round since 1989 welcomed Premier League side Luton Town to a packed-out St James Park for a Tuesday night clash under the lights and it was Mitchell's 83rd minute strike that secured victory.

Manager Gary Caldwell named five changes from Saturday’s league game at Oxford with Jack Fitzwater, Vincent Harper, Kyle Taylor, Caleb Watts and James Scott coming into the starting XI.

Despite Luton seeing the majority of the ball in the opening minutes, it was City who had the first real chance thanks to Harper’s footwork on the left-hand side of the pitch, teasing a low ball across the Luton box. Luckily for veteran keeper Tim Krul, there were no red and white shirts at his back-post to tap home.

Luton were not messing around, forcing City to sure up their defence. A strong tackle from Fitzwater saw off the first attack of the barrage, before Vil Sinisalo pulled out the heroics to deny Luke Berry’s long-range effort. Sinisalo’s near-post then came to the rescue to deny Cauley Woodrow from close range and put an end to Luton’s opening onslaught.

Scott hit a curling effort as hairs raised and stomachs dropped around SJP. Starting its journey from 30-yards out, the ball sailed through the air before finding its way inches from the top-left stanchion. This moment inspired a phase of City attacks, both of which coming from a bit of Demetri Mitchell magic on the left-wing. The first effort was a low venomous cross, which Krul was able to claim. Mitchell then decided to go himself for the second effort, again curled, this time towards the back-post but Krul managed to smother once more.

Luton then came back and piled on the pressure at the Big Bank end, coming close several times. Elijah Adebayo’s close-range header went just wide and minutes later Alex Hartridge’s sliding challenge denied Luton in City’s box, resulting in a corner. This corner then led to pandemonium in the six-yard box, a game of pinball ensued with every Luton effort being blocked by a strong red and white shirt until Adebayo struck from 8-yards out and Sinisalo was able to parry the ball to safety.

Having narrowly escaped, City attacked. Some beautiful link-up play between Carroll, Scott, and Watts ended with the latter firing from outside the box and onto St James Road. Then, Luton claimed the first yellow of the game as former Man United man, Teden Mengi couldn’t keep up with Harper on the left-wing, resorting to lazily clipping his heels.

City momentarily went down to 10 men as Watts went down injured, leaving them exposed at the back. Thankfully, Harper stepped up and pulled off a crucial tackle in his own box to deny Luton from capitalising. Watts then came back on the pitch and in his last moments before being subbed off for Reece Cole, he helped City to win a free kick in Cole territory. Cole’s unfruitful delivery into the Luton box was the last action of the first-half.

Early into the second-half, a wild miscue from Joe Johnson as he tried to pass back to Krul gave City a corner. Said corner was floated around the box via headers from both attack and defence before being cleared to the feet of Cole on the right-hand side of the pitch. Cole then found Mitchell who span a dark blue shirt and found space on the edge of the box to fire one over the bar and into the Big Bank.

A medley of opportunities for both teams followed in the next twenty minutes: notably, Mitchell being set loose on the right-wing and darting to the byline before firing the ball at Johnson, who couldn’t have known much about it. Johnson’s block fell kindly at the feet of Taylor who had time and space to strike the ball from the edge of the box, just wide of Krul’s right-post.

Luton then made a quadruple change, which sparked the beginning of an uncomfortable period of the game for City supporters. Luton berated the City defence again and again but to no prevail, a mix of valiant City defending and misfortune for the Luton attackers meant the game remained level going into the final ten minutes.

In the 83rd minute, some would say against the run of play, City substitute Yanic Wildschut found Mitchell on the edge of the six-yard box, who pounced: smashing past Krul and home in front of the Big Bank. St James Park exploded as Mitchell put City 1-0 up in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Exeter continued to pile on the pressure, creating a couple near chances met by roars from the Grecian support. Mitchell received a second yellow in the midst of the chaotic end but he might have just scored the winner to send City through... They couldn’t, could they?

They could. Exeter City held off Luton Town’s last-ditch efforts to equalize, beating top-flight competition for the first time since 1980 and sending themselves through to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup!

[Just imagine doing that at Boro!!]

At 31, 18 clubs in all since his youth career began at De Volewijckers [DWV] in Amsterdam, is impressive.
So far he has made 5 apperances for Exeter this season.

Given the injury situation that's a pretty strong lineup.
It is a strong lineup.

Looking at the draw for the last round, all the prem boys drawn against each other, which means, should we progress into the quater final, we are very likely to be playing a prem side.

Looking forward to a little distraction from the crap in the world.

Nice lineup, hope Clarke and Gilbert get some minutes second half.

We have no CM cover at all though looking at that bench. That is worrying, hope we get no big injuries in that position before o Brian comes back.

The Gaffa looks ready as the team surveys the pitch and the ground at St James Park.

This one might not be as glamourous as the other St James Park, but its going to be noisy and a tight game. The fans couldnt be much closer to the touchline at this fine little ground. Over the years, fans have swept the terraces, painted the stands and barriers, had bucket collections to buy new floodlights, paid the wages of new players and done things to keep their club going, which we take for granted!

Wonder if the green bins are playing a part tonight?

Guaranteed those upper floors of the houses opposite will give free view of at least some of the game!
