"In this time of the Season you can pick and choose, drive yourself mad"

Now six games unbeaten on the bounce, Michael Carrick at his most recent Media Conference, expressed his delight that the mood around the camp is still positive, and that results have added to that. Over a number of weeks, Boro have taken on some very tough teams, some, like the Owls, are fighting against relegation, whilst Southampton at the other end of the league are hoping for an automatic promotion place. Whilst some assumed the game against Sheffield Wednesday was going to be easier than the one against Southampton, they were wrong. We fought extremely hard at Southampton and that never-say-die spirit was epitomised by that 90 minute Latte Lath header from a perfectly weighted Alex Gilbert cross. Sheffield Wednesday are obviously having their own problems, but for our good goal-keeping and a few way-ward shots, they could just have easily beaten us. But we showed control and discipline, grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and getting stuck in. In the end, we got what we deserved.

It's a team performance and everyone deserves credit. Carrick said he had got the result he was hoping for and felt the team were at that "moment" where momentum from our previous games can help drive us forward.

Said Carrick:
Through a season things come a little bit easier in terms you got a fully fit squad, everyone's in good form, you're winning games other times it's a bit more challenging, and you've got to find a way around that. The boys have been good with that adapted, being flexible and had to dig a little bit deeper than at certain points and find ourselves where we are. You know we'd like to be higher up, we'd like to be on a longer run of games than we've had, but I think at the moment we've we've had a good little burst and the boys have stuck together really well and looking towards what's left of the Season.

So, what does Carrick think of our slim chance of getting into the play-offs?
Obviously, losing games and drawing games is not going to get us there, doesn't get us where we want to be, so of course it's game by game trying to win, building on what we've got and looking ahead to Swansea. Of course, anything's possible. I think that's this league at this stage. We've
proved over the season, we can win certain games at certain times. This is when it counts, you know, towards the end and when things are sorted out. So we just got to keep trying to give ourselves the best chance and then see where it ends up.

In this time of the Season you can pick and choose, drive yourself mad. I think it's the next game and concentrate on that and keep chipping away.

With Hull and Ipswich coming up next week, Carrick will have plenty to occupy him, in terms of preparation and managing players, including those who may be coming back from injury. For him, we can't afford to take our eye off Swansea, who, in spite of having a relatively poor season, have had some good results and play the possession game. To assume they have nothing to play for is clearly a dangerous approach to any game, but they will have their own reasons for playing well and hoping to take points off us.

[Swansea lost 1-0 at home to QPR following some poor defending. The Swans have conceded 60 goals so far - the fifth highest in the Championship!]

Swansea have had a change of Manager since January, with Luke Williams joining from Notts County. He faced a difficult task, with little time to get to know the squad, before hitting the ground running. He has a unique style and gradually the team are learning his game. Recently they lost to QPR, drew against Sheffield Wednesday and beat Cardiff 2-0 in the South Wales "derby". The Swans sit seven points above the drop zone, in 15th place in the league, with two wins, two defeats and two draws out of the last six. Other than Rotherham, there is no certainty of which of the eight teams below them may end up being relegated! It's very tight and the points difference is very small. One win can make a big difference, so the Swans will be up for it. Luke Williams is not a man likely to want to do us any favours.

Finally, in response to rumours in the media about various players being linked with other clubs, Carrick, as expected, put them in the bin and wasn't prepared to waste time speculating. Likewise, he commented that his focus at the moment is on the final league games and that contract talks with existing and future players will be dealt with after the end of the season. Interestingly, he refused to talk about the loan players, O`Brien, Thomas, Greenwood and Ayling as being other than "our players". "They're all our players [and] I don't treat them any different" he said.

With just Preston and Coventry between us and just six points short of Norwich in sixth place, there is hope, although a lot depends on all the other teams. Coventry went all the way last year and lost out at the final hurdle. Preston spent a large part of this season around the top six but have fallen back. North End play Southampton in their game in hand, whilst Coventry face Hull City in theirs. It feels strange, after Boro`s dreadful start, we have put a run together when it matters, but that sixth spot maybe a bridge too far. Another three points against Swansea and who knows.

This is the Boro you know, after all!

We can make it seven unbeaten!

Up The Mighty Boro!

Come On!

Luke Williams
Untitled.jpg

The Swansea City Manager re-joined Swansea back in January after two successful seasons taking Notts County from the National League, back into the football league. He was previously Assistant Head Coach at Swansea alongside Russell Martin. His style is possession-based. His teams like to play out from the back and use the width of the pitch. Not always easy on the eye, but he achieved success at Notts County, before moving back to South Wales. At Notts, his teams often over-ran the opposition defence and would score five, whilst letting three in at the back! There is much speculation about summer recruitment and retention of players at Swansea. It's a team Williams has inherited and had to work with, but gradually he is impressing his style on the squad. Certainly they have defensive frailties, conceding 60 goals in the league so far. Here's Williams assessment of his team, following their home defeat to QPR with poor defending and a lacklustre performance:

Luke Williams lays down gauntlet to sluggish Swansea City stars and pinpoints man who will address major concern

The Swans boss has demanded more from his team ahead of the final few weeks of the season

The Swans travel to Middlesbrough on Saturday on the back of an Easter weekend that delivered just one point in two games, including a disappointing defeat at home to Queens Park Rangers at the Swansea.com Stadium.

For Williams, it is the players "mentality" which is key:

"This is the one I'm really suffering with at the moment," he said when asked about those comments ahead of the trip to Teesside. "For the people that are criticising, saying 'What we saw against Cardiff, we're not seeing again', I want them to know I agree. I agree with them.

"This is the problem when you raise the bar up, as a group of players. They deserved to win the game [against Cardiff] in the way they won it. There's no luck, and it's not a performance that's an outlier. It's a performance that was brewing because we played brilliantly for a lot of the game against Sunderland. Against Blackburn. Against Watford. A performance was coming, and the players raised just that little bit more.

"Unfortunately, when you raise it that little bit more, you have to stay there. Me and the players. We have to stay there. So when people are criticising saying they haven't seen the same sort of levels against Sheffield Wednesday, or against QPR, they're right. They're right.

"People will naturally say we're conceding too many goals, and I take that criticism. We tried to restructure the line-up and change our average positions. So then we became difficult to score against from open play. We had a brilliant record on set-pieces. Now it's taken a hit at this moment in time.

"That's the way I assess it. Okay we've sorted out a lot of things. Now we should be optimistic about what we can do in the future."

Matt Grimes - Swansea City Captain
Untitled.jpg

Signed for the Swans when they were in the Premier League in 2015. Having been out on loan to Blackburn, Leeds and Northampton, he was recalled following Swansea's relegation to the Championship. He is one of the few "ever-presents" who now has the Captain's armband. In November 2023 he signed a contract extension which will take him into 2025. So far, the defensive midfielder has made 269 appearances and scored six goals for the South Wales outfit.

This is what he had to say in the lead up to the Swans visit to The Riverside on Saturday:

“I’m confident in the future. We had a tough start under the gaffer, but I’m sure everyone can see the strides we’re making. We’re implementing the style the manager wants to see.
“There have been a lot of difficult moments this season, but this team is building and growing.
“It's been a drastic change to training and style, but it’s a positive one. Bit by bit, we’re improving.
“We’ve played some top teams, and our aim is to compete with them. We’re not there yet, but I’m confident we’ll get there under this manager.
“He has got us back to the basics of making everything we do about us. There’s so much clarity and vision that it’s not hard to understand what he wants.
“I know it’s been a tough season for everyone involved with the football club.
"The season has been disappointing, but there’s so much to look forward to under this manager; his ideas and how he sets us up is fantastic.
"The lads have stuck together, they’ve been outstanding, and we want to finish as strongly as possible and show the progress we believe we are making.
“Momentum is such a huge thing in football, so we want to finish strongly, and that starts on Saturday.”

Just an aside to posters who have not looked ahead in all the important aspects of footy life. After this morning there is only 3 more weekend matchday breakfast/brunch opportunities - as two of our games are weekday. Weekend match day breakfasts are an elevated and non rushed affair. Whilst chomping my way through a bacon bap or sausage sarnie I have all the time to ponder on xG stats, starting line up, have we even got 11 fit seniors with 3 subs, look up every stat of every game the opponet ever had, and everything else. I mean just while my coffee was brewing I asked Alexa what is Swans ppg in their last six away games. Took me a few mins to remember I didn't have an Alexa and had to go with a manual keyed lookup on my laptop

Going to need to be patient today, they play very possession based football but I believe we can do it UTB!

In their last 8 away games , apart from a loss to Leicester these Swans have only lost once, Bristol City 1 -0. I think they will to tough to breakdown .

Their away record is OK. They don't score many goals so I don't see much of a threat from them. We should win this one.

Extraordinary FK from Greenwood there. Almost as extraordinary as the linesman's performance so far.
