11th March 2023

A week is a long time in football. So much can happen and its certainly happened this week. That 5-0 victory over Reading was the biggest margin in a League Game at the Riverside since the 8-1 thrashing of Manchester City, way back in May 2008. Every game feels like its the best game of our season. But, the following week - up pops another scintilating performance which feels better than the last. It was "disappoionting" we didnt get 10 and had two players on a hat-trick: we would certainly have had one - if Chuba hadnt shown his selflessness and team spirit, by handing the penalty kick to Marcus Forss. Many have said on FMTTM and elsewhere, that it was up amongst the most accomplished performances in decades. The flow of the play, the terrific individual performances, especially the two midget-gems from Villa [Ramsey and Archer]. It was a joy to watch. It was impossible to pick out a Man-of-the-Match. Every player contributed. Reading were a poor side - but that doesnt take anything from the lads. After all - it took a flukie goal from the Blades to beat them only 1-0 midweek!

Carrick YES.jpg
Michael Carrick:
"I`m delighted to be here. why wouldnt I? I`ve got a terrific club, a terrific group of players...and I love working here"

In his recent Media Conference, he commented on the Reading game: "Its nice coming back off a good performance. But I have to say,....is there a lot of difference between this week and the week we had before it after West Brom (?) [well] around the training ground and around the group.....not really". So its business as usual wityh carrick looking for improvements individually and as a team. "We`re certainly not getting too carried away by the game [last] weekend".

Swansea?
Michael has clearly done his homework: "In swansea, its historically a tricky place to go for Boro. Facing no wins in seven - or something like that". But he isnt really worried about past results, more about the future and he made it clear to reporters: "I`l be honest, Im not really one for that [superstition or predictability]. Teams change..." the way they play and its of no particular significance of results in the past between the two teams. "We`re going there to play against a good team, that really tests you. They like to play a certain way and are good at what they do". Possession football is their game and its very frustrating at times, but we have the quality to break them down.

Sheffield United?
Carrick was asked if he was "worried" about the "chase" after Sheffield United and whether we can overtake them into second place? Carrick replied with his usual candour: "I`m not getting involved in that. Its something we cant control. "We`re concentrating on ourselves and [trying to achieve] as many points as we can and see where that takes us".

Consistency?
"I genuinely just enjoy the challenge of us becoming better really......The biggest challenge in football is consistency. Whether through a training week or a full 90-minute game or certainly over a period of time. Consistency [or lack of] can find you out in the end. You can either put it together with the ingredients [and] have the mental, physical and technical capacity to go again. Or, you can be sporadic...." and drop points and unpredictable.

Media "noise" and Speculation?
"I dont watch it or listen to it" said Carrick, brushing off the question. "What goes on on the outside, goes on on the outside. I`ve kind of already hardened myself to that, so I dont tend to pay much attention". He continued...."I`m just loving being here at the moment with the players and the staff and the club....in a really good place".

A reporter asked him the question about whether he had heard the speculation about being a possible candidate for the West Ham job [should it become available]:

"I started at West Ham as a young boy. Its a fantastic football club. I know David [Moyes] very well. I`ve obviously played under him. I have huge respect for him, so I think for me to comment on anything is hugely unfair and I wouldnt do that. What I will say is, I hope that they have a really fantastic end to the season with David, because its a fantastic place and David is a good man. I really wish them all the success".

Has Carrick "exceeded" his own expectations since joining Boro?
Hes taken boro from 21st in October to 3rd in the table. How does that feel(?). Carrick replied candidly "I didnt really look that far ahead to be honest. I think it was a case of coming in, learning about the players [and] the club and seeing how far we could go. Thats not changed. Who knows where it will end up". And is he still happy to be at Boro(?) - [another daft reporter asked]! "Yes I`m delighted to be here. why wouldnt I? I`ve got a terrific club, a terrific group of players...and I love working here". Sounds pretty unequivocal!

Players:
Chuba
? Carrick was concerned about his abilty to grow as a person and mentioned how much effort he puts into his own game and his own development. Carrick mentioned his selflessness and how handing the ball to Forss to take the penalty [last week] was an indication of the team spirit and emphasised how much Chuba couldnt score without the support of the "team" as one. Cameron Archer - one of the two new "midget gems" [alongside Aaron Ramsey] - Carrick said he was pleased with his development and expected more to come. He mentioned that loaning out players can be beneficial to their careers. He also noted Aaron Ramsey and his loan to Cheltenham Town before eventually joining Boro. Haydn Hackney had previously experienced the ups and downs at Scunthorpe, who are going through a torrid time on and off the pitch. Equally, Carrick was asked about Anthony Djiksteel and his International call-up to Surinam. He again emphasised that players have control over where they go, where they see themselves and have the ability to make their own decisions. Whether it was playing for England or any other team. Paddy McNair - still going through the process of recovery having shared his nose with someone else`s elbow! Zak Steffen? Carrick repeated to one reporter...."He`s never been criticised by me. He`s a big part of what we do...". What about keeping players like Zak and Ryan Giles at the end of the season or having the finance to buy them (?).......Carrick was careful to reply that football is all about "evolution". About players moving in and some moving out. He gave the impression that no matter how much the reporter tried to "squeeze him! - the reporter was getting nothing from him!

Its a long way to South Wales.
But its not quite as far as Tipperary!
Come On Boro!

Lets go again and bring back those three precious points(y)

UTMB!✊

A Swans Fan View of their chances this afternoon against the Mighty Boro:

Swansea City fans will be hoping Chuba Akpom needs a rest this weekend, the Middlesbrough striker has twenty one goals to his name this season, the best campaign of his career. His goal return has been nothing short of incredible as has been Michael Carrick’s management journey to date.

Not only that Middlesbrough are the form side in the championship, top of the league over the past twelve games with a resounding return of ten wins and two losses. And they are the Swans next opponents.

34716_g.jpg

Akpom has even missed a number of games this season, his scoring record would be far higher if he had featured in all of them. He isn’t the only threat but Russell Martin really does need to take notice of the type of goals Akpom scores and the threat he poses to the Swans central defence. Thirty of his career goals have been game winners and this season he has scored every type of goal with both feet, headers and penalty’s. He is over 6’ and has explosive pace over short distances. Ben Cabango and Nathan Wood will have their work cut out, but they are the best the Swans have to negate Akpom’s threat.

Middlesbrough’s season is a frightening statistic, a form team with a sold out away support coming to the Swansea.com stadium this Saturday is possibly the last thing Russell Martin wants. But it should be exactly what the Jack Army wants. A big game atmosphere, nothing to lose and everything to gain in a championship encounter that has all the ingredients for a superb game. Any Swans fan that can make it should be there, and of course circumstances will always dictate that, but if it’s possible it surely is a no brainer ? There’s no reason why not, it’s what following your team is all about.

Chuba Akpom : Twenty one goals in twenty eight matches this season

There’s much that can go wrong for Swansea City on Saturday but they do need a vociferous Jack Army behind them, it makes all the difference. We need to see Swansea City on their home turf battling and displaying what they are all about to as many fans as possible. Martin is up against Michael Carrick who has a seventy percent win record for his twenty Boro games in charge. That’s a lot for any novice manager. If only that could happen in every instance. Carrick’s coaching philosophy has been described as similar to Jose Mourinho, speaking last month Carrick said. “Seeing Jose close up and what he’d seen in players, how quickly he spotted strengths and weaknesses, he made up his mind very quickly and was very decisive tactically how he went about things. A terrific experience and it was a short point unfortunately with Jose in the end, things changed quite quickly”

It’s a huge test this Saturday but one that Swansea City have to take head on, it has every ingredient every true football fan wants in a football match, and the louder the voices the more chance surely of getting those three points.

This weekend could be decisive In the race for second. I know every game is important but if Sheffield United slip up against Luton and they may well do, we win, then the pressure on them will be intense. UTB and we’ll done those fans making that journey to S Wales.

"Bitesize Prediction" - Soccer News:

Looking to lay down another Championship marker on Saturday afternoon, a high-flying Middlesbrough will make the trip to a struggling Swansea.
1678531853317.png
Starting with the hosts, while Swansea might have managed to claim a much-needed 2-1 victory against Blackpool last month, it appears that was nothing more than a minor boost. Last seen over the weekend putting in yet another downbeat display as they were hit with a 1-0 loss at the hands of Luton, Russell Martin’s side are in the midst of another extended rut. Although the Swans might essentially find themselves sat in Championship limbo this year, the former MK Dons boss has seen his side win just one of their previous nine matchups across all formats. With that run stemming all the way back to January 14th, Swansea have continued to show some rather glaring defensive struggles. Recording just a single victory at the Liberty since opening 2023, Martin’s side should be bracing themselves for another real test here.
1678531972045.png
As for the visitors, while Swansea might be enduring an extended Championship struggle, Middlesbrough find the mood in their camp at a red-hot high. Making an immediate return to winning ways last weekend as they claimed a stunning 5-0 romp at home against Reading, it is no secret that Michael Carrick’s side have their sights set on securing a famous Premier League return this season. Only continuing on a remarkable purple patch since appointing the former Manchester United coach, another victory here could move Boro within just a single point of breaking into the automatic promotion spots. Riding what has been a stellar wave of momentum, it should be noted that Saturday’s guests have won 10 of their previous 12 Championship showdowns. Given the huge recent gulf in class, we’re backing an away victory for the top-two contenders.

Swansea City - Questions and Answers with NATHAN WOOD:

Nathan Wood faces his former club this afternoon as his first season in Swansea City colours enters its final run-in.

Here, the 20-year-old reflects on a year of learning in SA1, his time at Boro during his development and why he is confident about the future with the Swans.
Woody Swans

Russell Martin has described our recent run as a tough moment for everyone. What has the mood been like in the squad?
“I think we are quite a level-headed squad and we have got good characters in there to try and help us younger lad.
“We just have to be ready to go again, and I am looking forward to the game.”

The gaffer also revealed that you had been telling the lads to smile more and enjoy the feeling of victory after the Blackpool game.
“Yeah, I did because it’s important to enjoy when you win. I know we were not at our best against Blackpool, but there have been plenty of games this season where we have dominated and we haven’t come out with a win.
“We won that night. We will always reflect on the performance because that is what matters and will lead to more results.
“But if you come off with three points, I don’t think you should feel down.
“When you lose you always look to the next one, you win one and you can start to think about how you put a run together.
“The mentality becomes different.”

We know you are a young squad, one of the youngest in the division, but do you feel that has made it difficult to be consistent because many of you are learning at this level?
“Maybe, that’s a difficult one to answer.
“I have not played for that many teams, and so it is not easy for me to say that it is definitely down to one thing or another because I do not have a reference point for it.
“We are all learning and we will be better for it in the future, I can feel myself improving here.
“Experience is something you cannot coach or buy, you only get it by playing games. The more I have played, the more I feel I know what to expect, the better I am at handling different moments.
“With the way we play, there are going to be moments where you are under pressure and you have to find solutions.
“There are times doing that where you make mistakes. No-one wants to make mistakes, but everyone does at some point, whether you are a footballer or whatever your job is, the important thing is to learn from them.
“It’s part of getting better and I love the feeling of working hard day to day and feeling that improvement in my game.
“I want to play under that pressure because I know it will make me better in the long run.”

Woody England

You are on a run of games against teams in the top six. What sort of a challenge does that pose?
“We go into every game thinking we can win, that has to be the attitude and that has to be the mindset.
“We know that when we get it right, then we can beat anyone in the league. We have shown that with some of our results from earlier in the season.
“I believe that, so we look forward to these games, but the key is to be consistent. That’s the key word.
“We have to go game by game, and hopefully we can start to build something.
“You cannot get fixated on say a seven-game block, it’s about having the focus on the next game and doing what needs to be done in that.”

On a number of occasions you have spoken about your own learning and development in your time here. How do you assess that process as we near the end of your first season?
“I feel I have learned so much, especially with the team-mates I have and the staff here. We go into so much detail and you are free to be yourself and be authentic.
“Every single game is the same, if we win or lose we go and look at everything in detail, everything is monitored and it really helps you. There is no place to hide, all the little things are picked up and those little things matter.
“I know exactly what I have to do, and I know exactly what is expected of me, and it’s good to be clear on those expectations. That clarity is so important.”

Woody Boro

You came through the ranks at Middlesbrough, becoming the club’s youngest player, how do you reflect on your time there?
“I reflect on it fondly. As a kid growing up in Middlesbrough, obviously that was the club I wanted to play for.
“I joined when I was 13 and I felt like I settled in really quickly and really well. I worked a lot with Jonathan Woodgate, and he called me up to train with the first team a lot.
“The chance to play for them at such a young age was a really proud moment, it is my hometown club and it was a great moment for me, and for everyone who played a part in helping me.
“I have a lot to be thankful for, that time at Middlesbrough has helped me get where I am now, and it’s important I make the most of it and kick on and keep improving in my career.”

Swansea City defeat at Luton ends in chaos as Russell Martin sent off and escorted from pitch

The Swans slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Kenilworth Road, with Martin being dismissed late on

Russell Martin was sent off as Swansea City extended their winless run to four games after slipping to a 1-0 defeat to Luton Town in a bad-tempered contest at Kenilworth Road.

The Swans boss was dismissed along with Luton coach Richie Kyle, following a fracas on the touchline involving both dugouts in the final few minutes of the game, and was escorted off the pitch by stewards.

The contest itself was decided by a first-half strike from Carlton Morris, who had already struck the crossbar with a header, before then finding the net just before half-time.

Swansea admittedly improved after the break, but a late Morgan Whittaker effort aside, failed to really test Ethan Horvath in the Luton goal. Indeed, Jordan Clark could well have sealed the points had he not been denied by the post late on.

The Swans have now won just three of their last 19 league games, and sit 17th in the Championship table. This latest performance will certainly have done nothing to ease the pressure on Martin, who became public enemy number one with the home crowd after being given his marching orders shortly before the full-time whistle.

Martin made two changes from from the recent draw with Rotherham United, with Jay Fulton replacing skipper Matt Grimes, who missed out due to illness, while Luke Cundle was preferred to Whittaker.

The Swans boss also made the call to bring Jamie Paterson back to the matchday squad for the first time in nearly four months, in what was the biggest pre-match talking point. The forward was introduced midway inside the second half, but couldn't reverse what was another disappointing day at the office for the Swans.

Swansea kept pushing, but after the Luton bench appeared to take exception to a challenge on the near side, an almighty brawl broke out between the two benches, ultimately resulting in Martin being dismissed, rounding off another hugely difficult day for the visitors.

Top Scorers - Swansea:

Swansea have a reasonably good forward line but have a defence which rivals the Titanic for leaks. They have conceded 52 whilst notching up a credible 47 up front. That ranks alongside bottom club Wigan and bottom half Reading.

Joel Piroe - 13 [+1 Assist] - Played for PSV Eindhoven before joining Swans.
1678533021342.png

Liam Cullen - 6 [+2 Assists] - A local lad. Joined Swans Academy aged 8. Received 11 Wales U21 Caps.

Oliver Cooper - 6 [+ 2 Assists] - Originally from Derby, he joined the Swans youth academy and made his professional debut in a 2-0 win in the FA Cup over Stevenage in January 2021. Scored against Sunderland back in October in a 2-1 victory over the Mackems.
1678533588858.png

Olivier Ntcham - 5 [+2 Assists] - Born in France. Now 27, he came through the France National Youth team but opted to play for Cameroon. He has travelled across Europe. His previous clubs include Celtic, Marseille, Genoa, Manchester City and Le Harve.

Just watched Sky highlights from Swans last game, lost 1-0 to Luton. Wanted to see what they brought to the attack at the moment. Showed 7 Luton goal attack moves and 1 move only where Swans got in the box and had a tepid shot. So only 10 seconds of the entire 2 mins was showing the Swans having the ball and attacking. Consequently, I haven't learned anything 🤷‍♂️ .

Apparently, on various fans websites and forums, Swans fans arent happy at the lack of investment in the squad by the owners and there is huge pressure on Russell Martin. The Swans season has gone from promising to bumping along in the bottom half of the table. Their defence is diabolical and it looks like the possession game is merely papering over the cracks in an average squad.
