* The Unofficial "Official" Boxing Day, Rotherham v Boro Match-Day Thread *

Just missing the point. The point is we shouldn’t require a penalty to be able to put the ball in the net. We should be better than not being given a penalty meaning we otherwise can’t score and we should be putting these to the sword like everyone else does regardless of being given penalties or not.
To be fair I was mid typing the same reply when this appeared. Your post implied we'd have been lucky to get it. Your general point is understood.

Something that wasn't mentioned on the commentary...but Greenwoods big chance in the second half that the diving defender saved. Wasn't it handball? I was sure it clearly hit his hands, but doesn't it count if his hands are in front of his body?
It was a great save by the defender, some of the top keepers in the world would have been proud of it.

No chance it was handball to that ref, not even a second glance…

2 points I think.

For me, it’s a lack of ability to break down poor teams who sit back. We’re better when teams try and play football against us (the better teams).

I don’t see a lack of effort, just a lack of ability against organised defences.
We don't struggle to create chances against them though. So I don't think that's it.

We just struggle to take them. Maybe it's psychological but just as likely to be a statistical anomaly that this season it's tended to happen against the teams at the bottom. We've not had that problem against lower placed sides in the cup.

Other than get better at shooting, I'm not sure what more we can do.

I think people are over reacting a bit to this defeat, we didn’t play badly, in fact the only thing that stopped us winning convincingly was poor finishing and a poor referee. I’m sure Rotherham are scratching their heads and wondering how they won that game after being pounded for most of the game. They got ten men behind the ball and hoped they could hold on and get a lucky break, which unfortunately for us they did - 9 times out of 10 we would win convincingly with a performance like that. We all know we need a goal scorer as a priority, and hopefully we get one come January. What i will say is Carrick got his subs wrong (again) today - it was clear as day there was no focal point for our attack and Coburn for me should have been on from the start of that second half. We just have to put that result behind us and go get something at Huddersfield now .

The two things aren't mutually exclusive.
I agree our finishing was poor, but that doesn't mean we were incredibly unlucky not to be given a stonewall penalty.
That wasn’t up for debate though, the issue was the statement “We got beat by a bad ref decision and a fluke goal, no other reason.” which is just totally absolving the players of dire finishing which is a consistent problem even before today. Even when we won it should often be infinitely more comfortable but for all our missed chances. To say the only reason we lost today is because we weren’t given a penalty and our inability to put the ball in the net is inconsequential is silly. We had 19 shots and only 5 of them were on target.

I thought it hit his leg when I watched the replay. Awful shot from Greenwood when he had so much of the goal to aim at.

I'm sorry but that is bang average goalkeeping, you'll see something like that on Sunday League nightmare moments on Facebook
No keeper in the world could have saved that !
He got beat by A CROSS FFS.
Should never ever happen and very rarely does, why? Because he got himself into the wrong position.
he was in position for a cross and by sheer fluke he was beaten by a slice that no keeper could have saved unless they were 15 feet tall.

I'll ask a different question and the answer has nothing to do with the referee or a flukey goal.

"Why didn't we win?"

You always see this sort of thing posted when the ref is incompetent, as if we should just be able to score a couple of extra goals to overcome the bad refereeing as well as the opposition.

Both of those are valid answers to your question though. Nonsense.
No, we didn't win because we couldn't score a goal it's as simple as that. The opposition did, fluke or otherwise. Refereeing decision has gone against us but it wasn't a stonewaller.

When you have difficulty breaking down mass defences with pretty football you need to be able to score from set pieces. Today we had 11 corners and Rotherham had 0 corners. If it had been the other way round then they would have scored off at least one of them, especially with Morrison in their team.
