* The Unofficial "Official" Boxing Day, Rotherham v Boro Match-Day Thread *

I'll ask a different question and the answer has nothing to do with the referee or a flukey goal.

"Why didn't we win?"
That‘s a really good question, really good, especially if you have to pretend there was no ref.

I can only think it is because Rotherham beat us, their goalkeeper made some good saves.

Yes we should have had a pen and frustrating that we didn't get it but it's more frustrating that we didn't finish any of 6 or 7 really good chances that we created. We played really well as a team. Deserved to win but that front 4 just don't have enough goals in them.

It's nothing that we don't know and once other players are fit, at least 2 of them are replaced but probably 3 or 4 of them.

Positives:
We defended well for a second game in a row where they didn't really create a chance. Fry and Clarke looked really solid.

Howson and Barlaser were excellent in the middle.

We created lots of really good chances, Izzy in particular looked very dangerous but thought Bamgura attacked really well on the left as well.

Negatives

Too many chances being wasted

No, we didn't win because we couldn't score a goal it's as simple as that. The opposition did, fluke or otherwise. Refereeing decision has gone against us but it wasn't a stonewaller.
I actually DO think that our lack of finishing was the primary reason we lost. To say that the bad ref decision or fluke goal was nothing to do with us not winning though is either major hyperbole, or you're trolling.

When you have difficulty breaking down mass defences with pretty football you need to be able to score from set pieces. Today we had 11 corners and Rotherham had 0 corners. If it had been the other way round then they would have scored off at least one of them, especially with Morrison in their team.
I can never remember a Boro team that has been good from set pieces, unless we had a good dead ball free kick taker in the side, usually in the top league. We just don’t do all that running around in the box to get someone’s head on it sort of thing.

Trolling? Behave yourself. Unless we improve our goals to attempts ratio we'll achieve nothing. You can't expect to complete a game without the opposition getting a bit lucky or the referee missing a foul.

I mean are you actually arguing that them scoring a goal didn't impact us winning? I don't disagree with anything in your last message - you're changing the subject and arguing with a strawman because you said something dumb in an earlier post.

After 45 years of watching the Boro I take a very simplistic approach (or dumb approach if you wish to be disrespectful). No goals scored = no 3 points in 100% of all previous examples.

I'm not bothered about either cup. I'd have preferred us to raise our game against the bottom team in the league to be honest.
Just my opinion. Haven't watched any of the game but I've seen the stats.

You'd rather win a league game against Rotherham that you weren't even watching, than beat Chelsea in a semi final? Mad opinion even by your usual standards geezer. 😜

I think people are over reacting a bit to this defeat, we didn’t play badly, in fact the only thing that stopped us winning convincingly was poor finishing and a poor referee. I’m sure Rotherham are scratching their heads and wondering how they won that game after being pounded for most of the game. They got ten men behind the ball and hoped they could hold on and get a lucky break, which unfortunately for us they did - 9 times out of 10 we would win convincingly with a performance like that. We all know we need a goal scorer as a priority, and hopefully we get one come January. What i will say is Carrick got his subs wrong (again) today - it was clear as day there was no focal point for our attack and Coburn for me should have been on from the start of that second half. We just have to put that result behind us and go get something at Huddersfield now .
Spot on

We lost a game we should have won. It happens. It's like some people have never heard of Middlesbrough Football Club before.

That's how I feel about it as well. Some games you just have to shrug your shoulders and accept thats part of the sport. The better team didn't win today. We've got a young team of promising players trying to improve themselves. On threads asking where we expect to finish, most don't think we'll make the playoffs anyway, so lets not sweat the small stuff.

You seem to be intentionally replying with unrelated things I agree with so I don't think there's much of a point in continuing this one - have a nice evening.

I think you're reading too much into our exchange. My evening would have been much nicer if we'd won but I'll do my best. Enjoy your evening too.

Not since watching Big Jack's Boro as a kid has it ever been any different for me.
There's been a Rotherham performance just about every season since then.
Wears you down.

Yet on the flipside there's also a performance in us where we play utter $hite from front to back and somehow come away with a victory, like Rotherham did today (keeper excepted)
We still have that to come this season, so you can add 3 points onto our expected tally👍

That's football.
