This album cover and title from my favourite Ukrainian band (released in 2006) is so apt

Well-known member
given the current situation. The painting is called 'The Last Journey'.

As far as I'm aware, members of the band are residing in their homeland and have just released a new song which was meant for later this year along with a new album, however due to what's happening... well, we all know the rest. So, so sad. I hope they and as many others as possible remain unscathed and unbowed. Glory to Ukraine 🇺🇦 💙💛

I can't be bothered You Tubing (and giving the owners more money) but the band The Ukrainians did a terrific album of Smiths covers a few years ago, Great stuff, sung in Ukrainian.
How apt their version of Bigmouth Strikes Again is with Putin's war

In case you didn't know, The Ukrainians came about as a kind of off shoot of The Wedding Present. Peter Solowka, former schoolmate of Dave Gedge and the bands guitarist at the time is of Ukrainian heritage. He started playing the band some trad Ukrainian songs after attending a family wedding or get together and they quite enjoyed souping them up into their own fast jangly indie rock style. This was in 1987 just as they were starting to make a name for themselves, with the release of the now classic George Best album.

Most bands would have used the opportunity, when offered another John Peel session, to cash in and promote their own stuff. Typically Gedge and the Weddoes asked if they could record this Ukrainian stuff. Peel loved that idea and eventually they did three Ukrainian Peel sessions.

Solowka eventually left TWP in 1991 but has kept this side project 'The Ukranians' going for 30 years. Now and then Gedge still does something with them.

I interviewed Peter Solowka as part of the Something Left Behind film - he and David are still very much in touch. The Ukrainians first LP and CD are back on sale now at scopitones.co.uk - all proceeds going to charity based in Ukraine.

That reminds me, I must sort my tickets out for the Weddoes gig at the Boiler Shop in April.

Cheers Lefty. Yes I did. I saw them doing a sound check before a gig in I think Leeds (possibly polytech?) about 87 or 88 and they did a couple of them then, but sadly not in the gig itself. A great live band too
