But I suspect your negative view would have prevailed had Carrick been a failure, which easily could have happened? He was the single biggest reason why we had the success we did, have the stadium we have and the memories we have to 2006.
His decision making since then until Carrick was dire and the club is a financial basket case as a consequence. Total control brings total accountability. But we are where we are.
Last summer I posted that I hoped he would return to being the man he had been to 2006, who had led the club with vision, ambition, drive and balls. I think he has done that and have to say I have been really impressed with what has happened.
Attracting and appointing Carrick and aligning things through the club appears a great set of decisions and like most Boro fans I am so much more optimistic about our prospects.
But I have been just as impressed by the efforts to explain things, to open up more and provide information. I think the club is trying to connect better with the fanbase than ever before.
I have been critical of 06-22, as performance on and off the pitch has been poor and below our long term norm. But credit where it is due and Gibson deserves huge credit for the remarkable transformation of the last 6 months.
Of course it would Jonny, as it would have been another poor set of decisions. But I suspect your negative view would have prevailed had Carrick been a failure, which easily could have happened?
We've punched well above our weight, cup finals. European cup final, silverware... take a look at our peers
Sunderland, Portsmouth, Bolton, Blackpool.. for all of Newcastle's bluster. What have they won?
Karanka? The club was going nowhere when AK stepped through the door, turned us into an excellent Champ team, a half decent Prem survival one, revitalised the club.He was the single biggest reason why we had the success we did, have the stadium we have and the memories we have to 2006.

flip they cost a few quid nice but doubt I would ever be buying a pairJoe Strummer Gibsons by George Cox
should anyone be buying and feeling generous - a size 11 Ta !
When was that again?Tbf, The FA Cup and the League.
Was going to say that myself. Great appointment and unfortunately it went wrong after christmas. The biggest mistake we made was the January transfer window. Should've either backed Karanka or got rid of him earlier and brought someone in who we were happy backing. Instead we signed 3 championship players, allowed the divide in the dressing room to grow, got rid of Karanka a month later, and basically waved the white flag of surrender and stuck Agnew in charge.Karanka? Southgate- let down by recruitmentWas going to say that myself. Great appointment and unfortunately it went wrong after christmas. The biggest mistake we made was the January transfer window. Since relegation I think Gibson's backed us and it just hasn't gone right. Tried to do a Newcastle and go up first time of asking by outspending everyone. When it wasn't working he brought in a proven Premier League manager in Pulis but the fans weren't on side with it and his football was disgraceful after we sold Bamford and Adama.
Woodgate was a ***show. I think Gibson has to take the blame for that one. Warnock was a good choice and he steered the club back in the right direction.
Wilder looked a good appointment but we all know what happened there.
Carrick a brilliant appointment.
I don't disagree with you to be honest.Southgate- let down by recruitment
Strachan - dreadful appointment
Monk - who would have thought?
Pulis - turned out to be the manager everyone thought he was.
Robson - a defining moment
McClaren - our first trophy
Mowbray- more to do with Mowbray
Karanka - connections made the difference
Woodgate - low cost, low risk, deserved his chance and did the best he could. Having Robbie Keane didn’t help.
Wilder - the emperor’s new clothes
Carrick - Robson, McClaren & Southgate rolled into one.. the perfect boro manager.
Feel free to compare other clubs disastrous appointments and recent achievements.
The poor decisions are financially motivated. We were in a right state after our European adventure but tried to keep up that level on a shoestring (relatively speaking) we were in a bad way under Southgate resulting in the Strachan appointment. Monk was probably the best we could have done with at the time.. young promising manager who was highly rated. Pulis promised a lot after that.I don't disagree with you to be honest.
When I said "since relegation" I meant since going down in 2017. Between 2009 and Karanka's 2014 appointment I think we did the dirty on Southgate, made one of our worst ever appointments with Strachan (thankfully he had the decency to resign), Mowbray did what he could on a low budget and unfortunately kept capitulating after xmas.
Woodgate was low risk, low reward, but a blind man could see that after 15 games he wasn't doing anything with us and we were sleepwalking toward relegation. Gibson should've had him out the far sooner and I think it actually reflects poorly on Gibson's character to sack Woodgate the first game back after the covid break, when Woody was saying he had the full backing from the board in the February, not long before football was paused for those months.
And yeah I think that if you look at other clubs they have the same, if not more, to complain about regarding their own managerial appointments and recruitment (our recruitment of which has been f*cking awful over the years)
I fully agree. In the past we have flip flopped between completely different management types and the recruitment has been scatter gun. Going from complete rookie with not even the first coaching badge, to experienced, rookies with a pedigree, maximum experience, proven championship promotions, cheap option rookie that was inevitably going to be a disaster with the odd mid level appointment and charlatan thrown in. Completely varying degrees of financial backing, too much money to terrible managers, not enough to good, buying players managers never wanted, not buying the ones they did etc. Jumping between managers that want to play football, want to play hoofball, want o play defensive etc so the squad is never in the right place for the manager etc. That's just the footballing side of things. Commercially we are set up like a northern league team and I'm far from happy about the way fans are treated. He was the single biggest reason why we had the success we did, have the stadium we have and the memories we have to 2006.
