Tories win local election in Normanby

You cannot compare local council elections to a general election, let alone council by elections, they are very different. This goes for every party, they are at best, a loose indication when looked at in total.

Turn out is generally very poor and it only takes a small number of people to cause significant swings, that along with independents and poor advertising of an election can skew close results.

I am in the Teesville Ward and didn't get to vote in this council election but when I saw who the Labour candidate I can understand why she didn't get the votes. I did think the independent candidate would have got in.

The turnout of 1039 is pathetic.

gregorgregorovich, isn't time you stood for Labour in this ward?
I left the Labour Party about 18 months ago mate. I have thought about rejoining and it's a result like this that is going to make me have a serious think in the new year. The one thing that put me off, even when I was a member, was seeing some of our local Councillors get absolute dogs abuse when they were out socialising. It wasn't nice at all. Having said that, I'm sat typing this, disappointed in myself for not taking a more active part.

They are in Redcar and Cleveland

"I will also be working closely with Jacob Young MP and my colleagues on the council to get the Eston Baths and Eston Square projects over the line, as well as addressing the issues with traffic in Normanby which I believe new lights could help improve."

Thanks 👍
New traffic lights have been planned for a long time now dont be taking credit for that

4 out of 5 people didn’t even bother to vote! I get it’s only a few days before Christmas but that is a really shocking statistic and nobody can complain about an outcome if they can’t be bothered exercising their democratic right.

The ones thinking a Labour majority is a foregone conclusion are probably the same who gave Corbyn a cat in hells chance or predicted a strong remain victory.

Wishful thinking.
Agree there is no room for complacency, hopefully there will be no chance of a Tory majority no matter how hard they play the ‘it’s the immigrants to blame’ card

With a turn out so low nobody can draw any conclusions from it. I think the time of year just adds to the apathy.
We need to be careful about branding voters scum - there is a difference between who is voting and who is being voted for.

Gullible, ignorant I can accept but I know a lot of good people who have been cajoled or hoodwinked into voting tory. The tory spin machine and right wing media is an industry that has worked miracles for the last 20 years.

how can you call people scum if they vote for a Tory for a council position? People are allowed an opposing view to ourselves

I can’t stand the tories but there are some things that Labour need to learn locally. This is a very pro brexit area. When you have the likes of Anna turley campaigning it’s just not going to sit well with that demographic

We seen a similar effect hartlepool.

Labour need to evolve to local demographics
Some uncomfortable posts on this thread.

Why is it ok for left wing to shout abuse at right wing but not vice versa?

The few people of Normanby who bothered to vote will come to regret their choice. Those who didn't vote the same. Doesn't make them scum.

Well Im afraid I voted for the tories & Brexit, so im classed as scum & a stain on the area & an embarrseament too

To save anyone the embarrassment of replying to my future posts I'll stay off here for a while

Though I will wish each of you a happy Christmas & all the best for 2023
Would you vote Tory again? That's the key question.

there is a difference between who is voting and who is being voted for.

This.

Some Tory voters will be scum. I daresay some labour voters will be too.

The majority of Tory voters I'm sure will vote for them out of ignorance. Not because they like forcing people into poverty, want human rights eroded or the NHS running into the ground etc.
