Trains to Birmingham

I am going to watch T20 Finals day in mid July and would love to be able to go by train on Friday returning Sunday. Has anybody got any advice about how I get the cheapest possible ticket eg when to book it and who with. A quick glance shows that National express is about £25 return where as train is over £100.

Is this the best it is likely to get, or is there a way of doing it cheaper. If not I will book my bus ticket even though the train is maybe £30 more comfortable but not £100.

As mentioned above try trainsplit.com but having a look for various Fri - Sun from now until mid-July, it doesn't look like you'll get much cheaper than around £85 (saw that for a weekend in May which I know is not the month you want to go, but gives good indication of how far in advance to book). Split ticketing also takes into account slower routes sometimes with changes so could be a faff.

Edit: also I was looking from Darlo as assume you're Teesside based?
