Tv wall mounting

I was buying paint in bandq yesterday whilst in the queue i was thinking how many of these diy projects people are buying stuff for are going to be bodged jobs. I reckon it might be 50%. I think it makes sense to know your limits with DIY
Exactly this. I'm terrible at DIY and would much prefer someone to do a decent job than a substandard effort from myself.

Agree with painting and decorating - we normally do this ourselves.

Re hanging TV on a wall - I mean it's straightforward if you're just putting it on a bracket but if you need to start hiding wires and chasing the wall then I'd personally get someone in.

Come to think of it they ran a cheap cat 5 cable behind my walls to my tv which i have since replaced
Yeah I think for most people what they do is probably fine as 99% of people will be fine with cat 5. For me it caused load of problems though and they weren't cheap for all the stuff we had them do.

The one richer sounds suggested did all sorts for the same price - ceiling speakers, 8x spotlights, rewired ceiling lights to a single switch as was on two previously, chased cables into a conduit so can pull new cables through (solid wall so not as easy as with dot & dab, rerouted sky cable for freesat, multiple network cables etc. it was a far bigger job and took 2 lads 3 days, everything was planned out and laser levelled and they're constantly coming to get me to check it was exactly how I wanted it - it wasn't a straight forward job as we were positioning stuff for furniture we didn't yet have and the mount height and position was for a tv that I hadn't yet bought (the vesa mount position changed between LG models of my old tv and the new one)

I'd defo use them again

If it's just mounting a tv and no electrical work btw, it's about 20 minutes actual work assuming you have a drill and a cable /pipe checker (about £15 on Amazon). I did our old 65 inch tv onto a £20 amazonbasics bracket that I got for a tenner in a sale and it was childsplay, and I did our bedroom tv too on a motion mount - but both already had sockets in place

If you get a man in it could:
A) give you an extra two valuable hours with your kids.
Or
B) cause your kids to lose all respect for you as you can’t even screw their telly to the wall.

There is a lot to think about and this could be a bigger decision than you think.

Although I think this was aimed at me, it still made me laugh so fair play.

I just haven't got any interest whatsoever in DIY, just find it boring and consequently I end up rushing and bodging.

I learned years ago that it makes more sense to pay someone else to do it.

I'd argue that if you take your time and do it properly then a DIY job is often superior to paying someone to do it for you. Especially something that is easy but time-consuming like painting. I've seen so many people that have paid decorators to do things and you can see imperfections, paint bleeds or lines that aren't straight. It's much more satisfying doing something yourself well I think. Professionals will achieve a certain standard and they will do it quickly but if you have to look at that painted wall for 5/10 years then is spending a bit of time to get it right not worth it?

The only time I really consider not DIYing things is if it's something potentially dangerous, like electrics/gas/water or if the equipment needed just isn't worth buying for a one-off job or if I can't get my Dad to do it.
We paid one of the decorator's that were heavily recommended on a local FB group to come and do 3 bedrooms for us. We'd had radiators taken off wall to replace them, and new sockets in so I'd filled and sanded around those but otherwise rooms not decorated in a long time by previous owner but he talked the talk, sanding down to make walls smooth and look good etc

By far not the cheapest quote but had a good reputation

Anyway didn't sand anything, so walls still looked rough, cutting in lines were poor, one coat of gloss on window, could still see where they'd splashed paint on it before painting, one coat of gloss on skirting and wallpaper bubbled and lifted loads at the seams. He'd basically rushed it to get it over the line and if you just looked at a photo it looked ok but looking up close in any detail it was a terrible job

Had a huge snagging list which to be fair he did sort most of but the walls still looking crap meant it was all a waste of money, so we were gutted.

I learned how to decorate properly via watching creators on TikTok and did a quality job of everything myself - filling, sanding, replacing light switches, fittings and sockets so learned the electrical side, painting, even had to pour some concrete and do damp proof membrane where we had French doors fitted

Anyway it was about 9 million percent better and we saved a fortune vs getting someone else in and hoping they did a better job. I still hated doing it as I get frustrated easily with detail orientated stuff, but I'm really pleased with how it ended up, so agree it can be worth doing yourself especially if you have a lot to do. I've since done stuff like wall panelling as well which definitely took me out of my comfort zone.

Between the decorator and AV bloke I find in hard to trust online review now and prefer to see previous work ideally through active social media or knowing someone that has used them

Is this a bloke asking someone else to do a basic DIY job :ROFLMAO:
Bit harsh, it might not be basic.
I would normally put my TV brackets up myself, but recently got a Sky Glass TV and they weigh a ton. The wall it was going on is rubbish for taking most fixings so wanted to be sure. (Lath and plaster).
I got someone in to do it. £35 well spent I reckon.

Yeah £35 is nothing

You also might have cables or water pipes / gas pipes running behind where it goes if fireplaces have been taken out etc

And agree on plaster i wouldn't want to mess about.

I've been doing a lot of my own basic electrical stuff like socket faceplate swapping, switch swapping and installing zigbee modules for home automation, but got stuck when it came to doing one light fitting as the cables were short and not easy to get above it in the loft

Spent ages looking at it and when electrician came to do some more complex work, I asked him to install it. It was £25 on the invoice!

I spent a good few hours researching it too with it being a double insulated light and no earth cable in the fitting, and it was all a waste of time 😂

Yes that was my philosophy i wasn't going trust my own diy to hang a 1000 pound Oled tv for the sake 30-40 quid. Tvs in bedrooms i have done myself

The hanging part is often the twitchiest bit, after having all that work done, eventually ordered the tv and it was a 77" oled- quite heavy but lighter than older models, but massive and difficult to maneuver on, had to get my dad round to help me lift it on, and then had to screw it secure and level, defo not a one man job

my uncle would always refuse to do DIY even though he was more than capable saying it was taking work away from another man.
I suppose it depends what he classed as DIY. Everyone is different.
Did he pay someone to change a light bulb? Rewire a plug? Tuning in a TV?
How about putting up curtains or hanging a picture on a nail?
You might scoff but some people (e.g. my mother) would struggle with those jobs. If I wasn't about she would definitely have 'got someone in'.

For all I would do a job like this myself I totally understand why some people would pay someone to do it. I bet there's a lot of people out there who have tried to mount TV's themselves and the TV has fallen off (probably on a hollow wall where the incorrect fixings were used). A good TV isn't cheap so why take the risk if you're not 100% confident?

He probably got my aunty to do it lol

Plenty of info on YouTube that show how to do it and what to look out for. You can then see wether you are capable or need to pay someone! As with all DIY jobs you need correct fittings and tools.

I'm going to practice saying that in front of a mirror to see if I can keep a straight face. Then I can use it next time the wife nags me to do odd jobs.
