Just received this message from our global travel safety team. The Tories really have driven this county back into the dark ages when it comes to public health.

Background and Analysis
Diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (DPT) vaccination coverage in the UK is estimated at 92 percent, which is within the 92-94 percent required to prevent wider community transmission. Health officials have reported roughly 1,728 pertussis cases nationwide in the UK in 2023, 560 cases in 2022, 527 cases in 2021, and 1,415 cases in 2020.

Pertussis - also known as "whooping cough" - is a very contagious respiratory illness caused by a type of bacteria called Bordetella pertussis. The bacteria spreads through respiratory droplets created when an infected individual coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Symptoms typically appear 5-10 days after exposure, but can develop up to 21 days after exposure. Symptoms range from mild illness with low-grade fever and occasional coughing in the early stage, to vomiting, exhaustion, and severe fits of rapid coughing in the later stage. Infants and children up to 4 years old are at highest risk, and typically suffer the most severe symptoms.

Advice
Visit a doctor to ensure vaccination against pertussis or immunity through previous infection. Practice basic health precautions. Call your medical provider if symptoms develop within three weeks of being in affected areas.

Whilst not disputing the neglect of the NHS, the ant-vax lobby may carry more of the blame for this.

I broadly agree with this.

I think the OP makes a bit too much of this; there were major outbreaks in the late 70s and mid 80s too.

This is whooping cough, for those not familiar with the name.

I can never understand why some parents leave it to chance by not getting their children vaccinated. Why on earth would you run the risk by not having immunity for you kids against diseases that cause - death , blindness, fits , Measles can cause meningitis.

I broadly agree with you but think that Boris et al really ramped up the whole not listening to any science during covid and havent showed any signs of change since, be it medical, air quality or water pollution etc.

Yes, the Tories are definitely an unhealthy disease spreading party, but no, the UK is not a 'third world' nation. Third world is kids begging on streets who don't go to school, hospitals that have no medicine, streets strewn with human waste, cities where you have to climb on top of the train to get a ride, and where you're lucky to live to 40. I've seen this for myself in Asia and Africa, so it always makes me laugh when this reference is made.

The issue with anti vaxxers is gross miseducation and the prevalence of complete fuckwits on social media platforms promoting pseudo scientitifc claptrap (which the uneducated consume due to lack of understanding of the scientific method)

Either that or they just distrust authority, which is fine in politics, but not fine when it comes to the scientific fields

Anti vaxxers should be denied all healthcare in the country, they can try leeches and alternative medicine

There is a name for alternative medicine that works..............it's called medicine, if it doesn't work it's called alternative , or homeopathy which is on a level several
magnitudes more laughablly moronic than anti vax
