Wales v England match thread

Trippier may even end up at LB to give Shaw a rest.

Fair number of permutations.

Walker is set to start, so that makes me think we'll go 5 at the back as Southgate likes Kyle as RCB.

I'm hoping TAA gets a game too, just to give more rest to our key players.

Away from the England dynamic wales know if the US and Iran are drawing they just need to beat us to go through.

So if wales go one up with 10 to spare do we settle for qualification or do we chase the game trying to get a goal back.
Why would we settle for a 1-0 defeat?

Wales wouldn't score another 3 goals with 10 to spare and Iran could then take the lead vs USA, meaning we would finish in 2nd place if the games finished with those scorelines.

We need to go all out to win the game tonight. Really don't want the Netherlands in the last 16.

This logic holds water right now as the Netherlands would be a more likely opponent if we finished Group B runners up.

We will of course know the outcome of Group A before kick off, therefore who we'd potentially face in the last 16 if we came first or second in the group and should the unlikely happen that the Netherlands finish second that could certainly influence this train of thought.

Granted, it's not very probable at all that they fail to beat the woeful Qatar, but them resting players and tying up qualification with a 1-nil win while say Ecuador beat Senegal by 2 goals and pip them to the Group A title is a distinct possibility.

I know people are unhappy about Henderson coming in but i think the US game showed that Bellingham and Rice in front of only 2 Centre Backs is a problem. The US overran us in the middle so you can only imagine what the like of France, Spain etc would do. This is essentially a game to get the formation and personal ready for knockout football - whilst we are likely to play Senegal or Ecuador and would expect to progress i think Southgate will revert to the back 3 now that Walker is appearing fit.

Pickford

Tripper
Walker
Stones
Maguire
Shaw

Henderson
Rice

Foden
Kane
Rashford

This is what i expect to see this evening, maybe Trent comes in for Trippier.

I understand bringing in Henderson and/or Kalvin Philipps, however i would prefer to see us adopt a 4213 formation

Pickford

Trippier
Stones
Maguire
Shaw

Rice
Kalvin Phillips/Henderson

Bellingham

Foden/Saka
Kane
Rashford/Grealish/Sterling

Let Bellingham be what he is, a number 10 and support the attack.

I think we will run out comfortable winners tonight, hopefully an early goal to settle it down.

Bellingham is a box-to-box midfielder for me, not a 10. If we're going with 5 at the back I think we should be able to play him in a 2 alongside Rice.

Against Italy we were pinned back in our own half 2nd half and didn't have an outlet, somebody who could get on the ball and look to carry the ball forward.

I don't quite understand the obsession over Gareth's alleged obsession with a back 5. Yes we may play that way on occasion, and admittedly usually in the toughest games, but I think he really wants to play a 4 and I'd be very surprised if we didn't do that today and in the last 16 game.

Bringing Walker in to RCB against France does make a lot of sense, given that Mbappe is rapid and comes in from their left, but I just don't think we need that cover against Wales or Ecuador/Senegal.

Be happy with an entertaining draw..being half welsh/english
I'm 1/8th Welsh. Would have loved to see both teams progress, but since that's not happening I hope we pull their pants down and spank them 'til they cry.
