Walking to school in the 60s and 70s

Borolad Can you remember the name of the shop on Tollesby Rd( the one on its own not the ones next to the Dev.). Drove past it the other day and said to my Mrs that the house on the corner at Lunedale Rd used to be a shop I went into on the way to school but couldn't remember it's name .
Simon's- See my reply to Borolad :)

Green Lane and Boynton. About a mile to each from our place. Walked or ran to both. Usually with mates. Good times!

Another thing that comes to mind was that one year (1967?) there was an experiment with not turning the clocks back. We were going to school in the dark. One of our classmates was run over by a United bus at the bus stop on Marton Road over the road from St Josephs school, when he fell in front of the bus. Witnesses were talking about it for weeks, describing the gruesome injuries to his leg..

Good 25/30 mins for me....Portrack to Norton. Had to go all the way round through Swainby etc because you couldn't cut over with the big train freight place up near the school. Now its 10 minutes tops with Tilery fields pathed and the rail line gone

Sounds like two traumatic events.

It was a 3 year experiment 1968 - 71, wasn't popular though. Remember the 1968 getting issued with flourescent yellow bands to wear over our coats.

I remember that well. We had to wear fluorescent armbands and strips on our rucksacks.
It was an experiment to try and help scottish farmers have more daylight to work in later on I think.

That will be around the time my aunty was bringing us fluorescent bags from the Dannimac for our school books, equipment, etc.

Not wanting to bring the mood down but think this might. We once had all stayed back after school with the boys playing football and the girls netball. When we made our way home we crossed at the lights on the Trunk Rd (no Green Man back then) and two girls ran out in front of a car and got run over. One was badly injured and the other died of her injuries. We were all aged 10/11 at the time.
Sadly I lost two cousins to the Trunk Road, a couple of years apart, both 10 or under at the time if my memory serves me right. I just remember being in assembly at Corpus Christi when the teacher made an announcement about a girl from Brambles Farm School being knocked down on the Trunk Road, at that point I didn’t know it was my younger cousin.

I used to walk from central Middlesbrough to Acklam Hall School each day There were plenty of buses available ,but I usually used to spend the fare else where. It was a great place to go to school and there were a few diversions with Chris Rea’s Stainsby girls. Although I’m away from Middlesbrough these days, I do like to wander through Hall Drive area and think how good it was then, but perhaps I am wearing my rose coloured glasses.

I still have a good chuckle when I tell people that I went to Hustler School, and watch their eyes widen.
Please do not take offence at this comment. It is said in jest. Also, I take pride at being told by the headmaster of St. Mary's College I was the most unreligeous child he had ever taught.

Was it difficult living a childhood as a proddy dog?

You'll probably have known my old fella and a lot of family friends (who taught there).
