What is your favourite promotion year?

It's close for me between 87/88 and 94/95. I think the latter just shades it as it meant so much with the promise of a new stadium, our 1st million pound player amd the ex England captain in charge. It just felt like the club belonged in the top flight for the first time since I'd supported them.

What was the battle of Stamford Bridge like?
Ridiculous. The whole day was!

I went in a minibus of Boro fans from the Leeds area (I was at university there at the time). Once we got past Watford Gap we had to bring the scarves in as we started getting abuse. We went to Wembley first for a few drinks in a pub there without incident, but as soon as we reached the King's Road area things got nasty. As we drove past the ground we were surrounded by Chelsea "fans" who began rocking the minibus. They only left us alone when a coach load of Boro fans passed in the other direction and distracted them.

We parked the minibus in a street and got a load of abuse from residents (and a parking ticket) and started to nervously walk to the ground. We passed a pub on the way and heard someone yell "Burrah" and suddenly half the pub emptied and began to charge us. We legged it and made it onto the Kings Road where there were a load of Met's finest. We asked the police if we could get an escort to the ground and were told "Escort? Escort? I wouldn't even give you ******* a Cortina" (which we took as a "no").

Somehow we made it into the game and it was the most hostile atmosphere I've ever encountered. The actual pitch invasion part wasn't that frightening as you always know when you travel with Boro that there are enough lads around to deal with any aggro if things kick off, but the 2 hour wait to leave the ground was nerve-wracking as you didn't know what to expect outside.

As it was, we made it safely back to the minibus, ran the gauntlet of abuse by the local residents who were revelling in our parking ticket and set off north.

We were actually safely on the M1 when we received some unwanted attention from some Chelsea fans in a car behind. I had a bag of red and white confetti that I'd made and accidentally left in the minibus before the game and I can remember us stupidly opening the back doors of the minibus at 70 mph and emptying the contents of the bag all over the windscreen of the car behind.

Crazy day!

87/88
97/98
94/95
86/87
91/92

That's my top 5 in that order. Loved all of them obviously but maybe 15/16 didn't feel the same because I was older, or didn't feel like the football was as exciting, or maybe a combination.

Loved the confetti end to the story

It's between Karanka in 2016 and Robson in 97/98.

I went to far more games in 2016 so that has to be it. Boro might not have been the most expansive team but going to the game it was obvious we'd be the strongest team.

Every promotion year is special, but just like your first kiss, your first love, you never forget your first promotion year either. The rises, the turns and the drops since whilst riding on the Boro rollercoaster still provide the thrills and spills, cheers and screams as they always have. 1973/74 was where it all began for me as an ST holder, that season will always be my favourite, what a way to begin your Boro fandom in earnest.

In the words of Carole Bayer Sager, nobody does it better, makes me feel sad for the rest.

I remember watching it on tv and you could sense the hostile atmosphere! the steward who 'accidently' opened the gates to the shed end, letting the thugs run free, knew exactly what he was doing. The 'Boro fans were locked in, nowhere to escape the missiles being hurled at them by the thugs who ran to the terracing. 'Boro stood their ground though and would not allow them to intimidate them. Hated Chelsea ever since.

That is why I am city tonight!

94/95

Only one automatic promotion slot. Moving into a new stadium. There was a lot of cope with for any manager coming into the club but no-one could believe Bryan Robson was coming, and that he would be playing too. I don’t think anyone could predict just how much that man transformed our club and the rollercoaster we would go on.

I remember the first game. Crowds of 8000-13,000 had been the norm the previous season so to see 24,000 and the crowd full on a hot summers day was a welcome site and we just went from there. After the first four/five games It was the only time I’ve ever been convinced we would be going up. Even in the usual Jan/Feb wobble I knew we‘d get back on track.

Highlights:

Robbo’s debut in the sun.
Jet from Gladiators putting her leg over her head each home game 😍
John Hendries Christmas Hat-trick at Burnley.
Attending a game that was abandoned at HT after Barnsley switched to playing in trainers due to the snow and Ice.
Uwe Fuchs Impact.
Jamie Pollock ‘Ugly Bast’ beating the Mackems at Joker.
Beating Wolves in big ‘Top of the Table’ clashes home and away.
Last game at Ayresome.
Listening to the radio when Bolton drew at Stoke to get promotion.
