you kinda finished this thread in the first postGetting out of the old third division for me in 86/87 was the best!
What was the battle of Stamford Bridge like? And yes, 87/88 for me. Went to both Bradford games and both Chelsea matches. Amazing times.
Ridiculous. The whole day was! What was the battle of Stamford Bridge like?
Loved the confetti end to the storyRidiculous. The whole day was!
I went in a minibus of Boro fans from the Leeds area (I was at university there at the time). Once we got past Watford Gap we had to bring the scarves in as we started getting abuse. We went to Wembley first for a few drinks in a pub there without incident, but as soon as we reached the King's Road area things got nasty. As we drove past the ground we were surrounded by Chelsea "fans" who began rocking the minibus. They only left us alone when a coach load of Boro fans passed in the other direction and distracted them.
We parked the minibus in a street and got a load of abuse from residents (and a parking ticket) and started to nervously walk to the ground. We passed a pub on the way and heard someone yell "Burrah" and suddenly half the pub emptied and began to charge us. We legged it and made it onto the Kings Road where there were a load of Met's finest. We asked the police if we could get an escort to the ground and were told "Escort? Escort? I wouldn't even give you ******* a Cortina" (which we took as a "no").
Somehow we made it into the game and it was the most hostile atmosphere I've ever encountered. The actual pitch invasion part wasn't that frightening as you always know when you travel with Boro that there are enough lads around to deal with any aggro if things kick off, but the 2 hour wait to leave the ground was nerve-wracking as you didn't know what to expect outside.
As it was, we made it safely back to the minibus, ran the gauntlet of abuse by the local residents who were revelling in our parking ticket and set off north.
We were actually safely on the M1 when we received some unwanted attention from some Chelsea fans in a car behind. I had a bag of red and white confetti that I'd made and accidentally left in the minibus before the game and I can remember us stupidly opening the back doors of the minibus at 70 mph and emptying the contents of the bag all over the windscreen of the car behind.
Crazy day!
Looking back now, silly and dangerous thing to do, but hey, I was 19Loved the confetti end to the story
Agreed. What we achieved defied all the odds given what had gone before.Getting out of the old third division for me in 86/87 was the best!
I remember watching it on tv and you could sense the hostile atmosphere! the steward who 'accidently' opened the gates to the shed end, letting the thugs run free, knew exactly what he was doing. The 'Boro fans were locked in, nowhere to escape the missiles being hurled at them by the thugs who ran to the terracing. 'Boro stood their ground though and would not allow them to intimidate them. Hated Chelsea ever since.Ridiculous. The whole day was!
