Whitby to Scarborough - cycling

Is it similar to the proposed cycle path from Great Ayton to Stokesley? I'd read about 18 months ago it was a proposal with Sustrans involved but haven't heard anything since??

Ongoing upgrade / improvements - some delayed by funding + covid.

I'm getting myself a hybrid cycle next weekend hopefully, delivery pending. Aiming to get out on it everyday around 5am for an hour before the school run and eventually full time work. Then another hour on the night. Plus cycling to and from work, my aim is to lose 50 kilos this year so.

Kids both have bikes now, pedal and a balance bike and I'm over running after them when I can just cycle with them instead 😂

I stayed in the holidays homes under the viaduct last year, and it was a great ride up this track in the Scarborough direction. Perfect for a hybrid bike or mountain bike, but I would not ride my road bike along there. Lots of walkers and other cyclists about.

Nice views, and scenery. Considering it used to be a railway line, I was surprised that it was not flatter than it is - some gradients in places.

How's the cycling going @Randy ?

Ive got a Specialized Roubaix and a Genesis Croix de Fer. I`ve bombed it on the Moore Road [A171] but taken my life in my hands. I try to avoid the A-roads
I did a small portion of the A171 on Monday, from the Lingdale turn off up to the Castleton Road, maybe a quarter of a mile. I wouldn't have liked to have done any more. Like you, I try to stay off the A roads as much as possible nowadays.

I use the track to cycle and walk on and it is mainly used by cyclists, dog walkers and horse riders in the main. The track needs some TLC in places. I use a hybrid and it is fine.

The reason cyclists get the most stick is because a small number of people do use it as a race track unfortunately, i have seen it several times over. Most cyclists are sensible and thoughtful, but it is a facility for all, some cyclists do assume they have right of way (like motorists on a road) and forget that dogs can be lurking in undergrowth or appear from nowhere. Dog owners and cyclists don’t mix very well on the track as a result and I have seen many a row, so when using it always slow down and look for dogs up ahead when you see a walker would be my advice and dont assume the walker will step on a verge where there is one. Also don’t assume ringing a bell is effective, lots of older walkers do use it and a good few seem hard of hearing.

Be thoughtful and show patience and you will really enjoy it. Once you pass under the bridge after North Cliff Golf course look out for broken glass and detritus till you arrive at Sainsburys near the town centre. The last 2 mile isn’t attractive.

Oh the return journey is mainly a long gentle uphill gradient from Scarborough to Ravenscar.

Ah, the voice of reason. I've used a short section of the route, through old Fyling Hall station, as a link on walks in the area and always found the surface to be good, no way should it be tarmac'ed. Perhaps a cementitious dressing would be an acceptable solution in certain areas. A reminder is perhaps required that it is a permissive bridleway and therefore comes with the attendant bridleway rules, bikes give way to horses and walkers, and horses give way to walkers. It should also be noted that the situation with bikes on bridleways is best described as 'legally tolerated' and as such there is no requirement to maintain the surface such that bridleways can be used by cyclists. Just saying ............ like.😉

Tin hat ................... trench ......................🤣

Anybody cycled the 21 mile cinder track (there and back)?

I'm wondering if a Hybrid would be suitable for this path. On the map it looks like a stunning ride!
Did it from the bike hire station at Hawkser. So enjoyable. Yes it suits any bike but not a road bike. Hybrid is perfect.

You know what! I still haven't got around to doing it - Hoping to fit it in in the next couple of months - I have a gravel bike hung on the wall waiting for action!

I use it to go to work, can be rough it parts at the Scarborough end and watch out for dog owners just standing there talking when they can clearly see you coming!
Ravenscar tea rooms not as good as it was under the previous owners in my opinion.
Hayburn Wyke a good shout for drinks and food at reasonable prices.
It doesn't really need tarmacing completely, just some resurfacing where it is and a bit of TLC in other places.

I would agree with the comments in the thread please do not tarmac it - I wouldn't want to see road bikes thundering down it. It s a great leisure track and please may it remain that way.

Cycled it yesterday. Lots of families walking and riding which as nice to see. Didn't cause any issues for cycling as you can't go that fast on the track.

There are some rocky parts, gravel parts and some muddy parts. Some quite large potholes too which need some attention. Deffo a gravel bike / mountain bike ride - you are risking punctures on a road bike - even with tubeless.

Overall a very enjoyable ride - some lovely scenery and the fish n chips at Winkin Willies were lovely!

And lovely weather you had. As I say as the name cinder track implies a perfect leisure cycle track and you can see why I would be against tarmacking it. Hope you popped into the Ravenscar Tea Rooms for a cuppa.

Sadly no tea stop! Had fish n chips in Scarborough and rode back to Whitby. Lovely fish n chips though.
