Just because some bloke in blue scored didn’t mean we lost
I’ve got 3 matches where I got totally soaked, Villa away, Oldham away New Years Day plastic pitch thrashed, and Sunderland home mid 70’s the programme was all stuck together. That semi final away leg at Villa was the wettest I have ever been at a match, totally drenched, went on a bus from St Mary’s college that a mate had organised.
At all those games Holgate, remember Oldham away, at the top of the away terrace there was an iron gate which you had to put your feet on & swing across a massive puddle to get on the terrace, crazyI’ve got 3 matches where I got totally soaked, Villa away, Oldham away New Years Day plastic pitch thrashed, and Sunderland home mid 70’s the programme was all stuck together.
Yes and if remember correctly there was very little pavement, if any, leading up to the turnstiles, it was just a patch of muddy ground. I went to Oldham for the league cup match when Karanka was manager and it was all different, it had lost its ‘charm’!At all those games Holgate, remember Oldham away, at the top of the away terrace there was an iron gate which you gave to put your feet on & swing across a massive puddle to get on the terrace, crazy
Wow, a rare Alan Willey headline! That’s the match, it was a shocking day. Here you are Holgate, rain pouring, drenched to the skin match you referred to

Cheers Holgate, would love to do something of that sort, but I think everything has been coveredWow, a rare Alan Willey headline! That’s the match, it was a shocking day.
E74 you need to write a book about the Boro, you have a library record of everything, it’s quite amazing really, it needs to be documented.
Pouring with rain it was a skidderThat Villa away game one of my favourite Boro moments as Marco Van Brennan swerves a free kick into the Holte End goal in the last minute. Great view stood behind
it in the away end!
Quality strike & a great kit tooPouring with rain it was a skidder
No I think there is another angle you could cover rather than just the statistics and facts and that is the memories to bring the facts to life. I often think this is missing from the Tim Williamson, Fenton, Camsell, Mannion eras. We know the results, the teams, the attendances but what was it like to go and watch a Boro match at the Linthorpe Road ground? Or Ironopolis at the Paradise Ground? What was it like watching Mannion in over 50,000 crowds at Ayresome Park? How was the build up? What did people do before going to the match? Other than what our Dads told us which in my case other than ‘you should have seen Mannion’, it’s all missing in my view.Cheers Holgate, would love to do something of that sort, but I think everything has been covered
Even down to the registered players & other stats that I'm presently doing / completing
Great post. Wish I had taken the time to record some of my dad's and uncle's memories before they passed away. Very much Mannion's and then Cloughie's era.No I think there is another angle you could cover rather than just the statistics and facts and that is the memories to bring the facts to life.
