Why can cars go over 70mph?

track days and an engine doing 70 that is capable of much more is working more efficiently, comfortably and reliably than an engine working at max capacity

I hired a car years ago in Cyprus, as soon as I went over the speed limit this annoying noise started. like a warning sound. As soon as I got below the limit it stopped. Thought it was a great idea and should be implemented in all cars methinks.
My last 3 work cars have had this. Provided that the car picks up on the speed limit sign recognition, I can set the warning to 3, 5 or 10 MPH above the speed limit. I have it set to 3, no need for me to rush and don’t need points on my licence for a host of reasons.

We can't be far away from constant real-time monitoring of every vehicle so you can be fined for every minute you exceed any speed limit.
Or maybe, if ever autonomous vehicles become a thing (I doubt it), their speed can be automatically limited to the prevailing limit. Or give the driver a mild electric shock. The possibilities are endless.

All the tech is there. Just legislation required. I'm sure the millennial desire to conform will push it through before Gen Z rebel and repeal it

Just on cars, we saw the blade runner guys putting stickers over the ULEZ cameras in London a few days ago. Apparently a lot of people aren't even paying it

It was the only time I have seen one, really thought it was a one off. Great idea though.

Don't cars have limiters built in? I've got a 10-year old Hyundai with one so I'd have thought it would be a standard feature in newer cars.

Being able to go over 70mph is essential for safe overtaking on the motorway. If every car was capped at 70 then I'd guarantee the middle lane would be full of people doing 69 and overtaking would be painfully slow as well as dangerous.
Just think of how speed limited lorries overtake each other now. There's far more cars on the road so you can guess the consequences 8f capping speeds.
More driver education, and more monitoring and punishment of dangerous or reckless driving is needed.
I'm sure that as technology takes over and older cars disappear off the roads then we'll see more safety oriented driver assistance systems becoming widespread.
