A very sad incident indeed. I always think that they can be nothing worse than a loved one leaving for work and not returning. How many times have you got our bed quietly hoping not to disturb your partner and left with a quick ‘see you tonight’.

Health & Safety on these sites has improved ten fold and the slightest incident is looked into in depth and hopefully learnt from for future generations.

One my most vivid memories as a kid was my mam telling me there had been an explosion at Lackenby in '84 and waiting to hear whether dad was alive. Fortunately he was only injured but three of his mates died.
I remember being sat feeling completely numb for what felt like forever.

I lost a workmate in the late 80’s, found him asphyxiated inside a tank. Poor bloke was not far off retirement and he took a lot of blame for his own downfall as he was the foreman. None of us had been trained properly, company got away without prosecution. I’m sure it would be different in this day and age.
