Worst Ever Boro 11 - We have our team!

It’s got to be Ben Roberts. I can’t even put into words the experience of making the FA Cup final for the first time EVER; the unmitigated joy of walking up Wembley Way, mingling with old schoolmates, family, strangers in outrageous hats and outfits - full of joy, hope and pride; singing ‘Abide With Me’ with 40,000 Teessiders - a dream I’d had since I was a kid. Then sitting down with happy tears in my eyes, and WTF!!!!!! 1-0 down before my bum had hit the seat. Useless arms-open ‘gesture’ from Ben in the general direction of a DeMatteo speculative hoof and TOTAL DESOLATION and ‘OH GOD, PLEASE, NOT AGAIN!!’

More deflation than the Hindenburg. Ecstacy to total despair in a nanosecond.

Festa’s perfectly good goal being disallowed just felt like the Gods were against us, but Ben Roberts destroyed a dream inside a few minutes, just like PE with Kate Bush.

That wonderful day in Cardiff did do some healing, but that moment at Wembley still has me wake up in sweats in the night. And, yes, my grandma COULD have saved it.

p.s. This could be a fantastic thread - oh sweet Jeezy Creezy, have we had some donkeys in our time!

P.s. Although, i must add an honourable mention for Andy Dibble’s performance in that 5-0 against QPR. It was actually funny it was so terrible. I think that they sussed early on that if they kicked it in the general direction of the goal, they were pretty much guaranteed to score. He was like an anti-Pears or Schwarzer - from a parallel universe of total ineptitude.
I was 14 at that match and although the sense of occasion that we’d finally made an FA Cup final wasn’t lost on me, if I’m honest I never thought we’d win and I was still devastated about relegation the week before. It’s funny how people perceive things differently.

I’d love us to make an FA Cup final now (and am nowhere near as bothered what division we’re in) but in a way it wouldn’t feel as big as I just don’t think the cup competitions are revered as much. It feels now like the untouchable dream for Boro would be qualifying for the CL or something, many of us may turn our nose up at that but it would be pretty awesome if it happened in reality.

Anyway, worst keeper we’ve had for me is probably Brad Jones but I feel bad cos he seemed like a nice lad. Hopefully he won’t be reading this. 😁

Ben Roberts out in front so far - with competition from Guzan, Lumley and o’Hanlon.

Can’t count Dibble I’m afraid as I’m presuming people are just referencing his 2nd spell where he only played 2 games.
But what two games they were!

Sorry to be picky - as I agree with most of those you've picked - but as Guedioura only started 1 game for us - away at Preston - I don't think he should qualify. Might as well put '2 minutes 1 booking' John Eustace otherwise

No problem, he’s there on merit. £4.5m gets him through the door.

26th most expensive signing in our history.. at the time

Valdes? Forget his attitude, ability wise he was fantastic. Part of the best side in world football for a generation and a World Cup winner. He should be nowhere near this thread.

Are you forgetting Bettinelli, Archer, Lumley, Daniels, Jones?

Guzan was alot better than Dimi.. Dimi was lucky he had the leagues best left back, arguably the leagues best centre back pairing and the leagues best defensive midfielder in front of them.
Dimi was nowhere near as good as people made out. Lucky to be playing in a very defensive side where he wasn’t tested much, but still managed to make some big mistakes. Imagine how bad he would look in this side

he was a stroppy spanish danny coyne.. did very well surrounded by the best players in the world.

couldn’t do it for Man Utd, nor for standard liege.. or the boro. it’s no coincidence that he hung up his gloves mid season in 2017 never to return to football. he’s still only 41

Hopefully he will be reading, if you are Brad, you were f*cking dreadful 😄.

I'd go with Kelham O Hanlon, lovely bloke but a dire keeper.

Also Jim Stewart - never really worked that one out as I was a big Jim Platt fan and Pat Stewart probably didn't do much wrong, just thought he should never have replaced him.

Not many people have seen Maurice Short. With us from 67 -70 (Whighams number 2) not very good at all/ Played 16 games then went to Oldham when he was 22 , played 5 games and left the same season ... career finished

One things for sure Kike Sola needs to be in this side. 45 mins was enough to suggest he wasn't even a footballer 😂

Discounting bad players for low appearances feels somewhat counterintuitive for this thread.

Maurice was my youth manager at Nunthorpe when I was a kid.

My vote goes to Guzan, he was absolutely hopeless.

Lumley was far worse than Guzan.

Guzan at least had the excuse that he was playing in the top division against Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Lumley was making mistakes weekly in the Championship.
