It feels like a decade ago when we came away from the Coventry Arena after a 1-0 defeat on 1st October 2022. It was a case of bewilderment, frustration and feeling completely dejected at our team`s abject display against a Sky Blues side, struggling at the bottom of the Championship on six points from eight games (!). They say every cloud has a silver-lining and thankfully [though we didnt realise at the time], it was the start of a new beginning: a time to regroup, reorganise and reassess where we were as a team. We started the season off with high hopes, but expectations dipped as the team was outplayed and results plummeted alarmingly. We fell to a Gyokeres (?) goal in the 17th minute and were lucky it wasnt a massacre by the final whistle. Thankfully, Wilder was sacked on the Monday and we thanked Steve Gibson for that!

Starting Line-Up:

Boro.
Steffen,
Djiksteel, Fry, Clarke.
Smith, Crooks, Howson, Mowatt, Bola.
Watmore, Muniz.

Subs: Jones, Giles, McGree, McNair, Forss, Roberts , Akpom.

Coventry.
Wilson,
Doyle, McFadzean, Panzo.
Dabo, Allen, Palmer, Sheaf, Bidwell.
Gyokeres, Godden.

Subs: Moore, Rose, Waghorn, Walker, Kane, Eccles, Desiderio.

Championship on October 1st after our defeat to Coventry:

Leo came in to steady the ship, applying the brakes and bringing an end to the stream of dreadful results. The 4-1 away win at Wigan was one of Leo`s successes in his short time at the helm. The bringing on of Haydn Hackney - who scored his first senior goal - was a master stroke. It wasnt easy trying to turn things around. One thing Leo brought back for us fans was hope. Its one of things which is key to a successful club. It meant we could dare to dream [this is Boro you know] and believe we could move forward and head up the league table. Little did we realise [or even imagine] at the time, that our whole world was going to be turned upside down.

Had anyone told us, we would have a rookie Head Coach, take us up into a position where we stayed on the tail of the automatic promotion spot in third place. Then end up in the play-offs looking at less than a few hours play to a Wembley Final and the Premiership - we would have laughed it off as a fairy tale!

⚽

Michael Carrick says he is going to treat Coventry with the respect they deserve and approach the match "just like any other game". He said in his recent Media Conference that this is a league match and he has no preference who we face in the play-offs. For him, "whatever-happens, happens". He also hinted at certain players in the Coventry squad whom he described as "dangerous" and commented how Boro staff are well "aware" of their main threats. In front of a packed house we have the opportunity to recognise Carrick, his staff and the players achievements - so far. The next few weeks is going to decide whether its going to be Plymouth on a wet Wednesday night in February or a local "derby" against the Skunks at The Riverside on Boxing Day!

Lately, its not been an easy watch for the last few games, considering the Captain`s Fare we have been served since the beginning of November. But Carrick repeated this week what he said last: its not just about results, but about performances and players knowing they have done what they are capable of. Injuries have certainly played their part, but Carrick is not a man to make excuses or throw players "under the bus". For him, we look forward together as a team, a club and as fans. He wants us to make as much noise as we can and give the boys that extra boost to drive them on. He`s not concerned who we may or may not meet in the play-off. Its about today and doing our best.

Now is the time, more than any other time this season, to get behind the team - like we have done home and away all season - and get this team over the line. We want to win the semi final [against who knows]. We want to have a good day out at Wembley and come away with a win! If someone told you we could be in the Prem next season?!

Just looking at the permeations for Coventry, Millwall, Blackburn, Mackems and West Brom. There are going to be a few twists and turns Monday afternoon that's for sure.

If it's level with 10 mins to go, Chuba has bagged his 30th of the season, do we take it easy make sure we don't get any daft injuries? Sure Coventry will be happy with that.

But if we are winning, and two of the teams below Coventry are too, could be a frantic finale.

Interesting - just glad it's a dead rubber for us.

Most Championship sides can be described as having little left to play for but Middlesbrough’s season remains far from over after securing their top-six berth with three games to go. A play-off semi-final now beckons, but with Boro losing twice since securing their play-off place, boss Michael Carrick has called for calm amongst fans stating there’s no need to panic as they’ve “played really well” in both defeats.

The interesting quirk in this fixture is that should Middlesbrough lose to Coventry, they’ll face them again both home and away in the play-off semi-finals! One would expect Boro not to want such an outcome as it could give the Sky Blues a psychological advantage in the games to come, although a return of at least three goals in six of Boro’s last eight home games (W6, D1, L1) suggests they may be happy about a Riverside return for this final match of the regular campaign.

Whilst a Coventry victory will mean this fixture will be one of the play-off semi-finals, a draw would leave Coventry open to being leapfrogged by Millwall which would see them face Luton, but a defeat could see them drop out of the play-off places altogether. So long as Mark Robins’ Coventry do qualify, they’ll actually become just the third side since 1968/69 to fail to win each of their first seven games yet still secure a top-six position!

At his Media Conference on Friday, Carrick gave few clues about the team for Coventry on Monday. He also made it clear he wasnt too concerned about whom his team will face in the play-offs. He believes that playing well and aiming to win gives us a sense of pride and self-confidence. The was no room for complacency.

"Come and make as much noise and give us as much support as you can, because the boys thrive off it and together hopefully it will work out for us."

Post-Rotherham?
The boys have trained really positive. Of course we wanted to win the [Rotherham] game, no doubt about that. But its about us being in the right frame of mind, [having] the right energy levels and getting the balance right for us. The boys have been terrific this week and really looking forward to the game on Monday…...and obviously what`s ahead after that.

Momentum going into the play-offs?
Any game you want to play well. First and foremost you want to play well and win. There are times when winning is a little bit more important than the performance. I think over time we`ve had a good level of performance. [In the last couple of games] there`s a couple of decisions [which have effected our performance], but ultimately that wont tell us the story at the end…….the boys have shown what they`re capable of…...confidence comes not necessarily from results...but [players] have a sense of how well they are playing. Sometimes a win gives you a spike and gives you a boost. Of course it does, but there`s a standard they need to hit to know they are playing alright. The boys have`nt flinched, so I think that`s a good time. I think we are just excited and looking forward to what`s ahead.

Coventry on Monday could be who we face in the play-offs. Does that effect [Carricks] approach to the game?
No. We`ve taken this as a one-off game. We`ll prepare [and] focus on ourselves and our own standards. We understand what`s at stake…..whoever we play after Monday we will deal with that when it comes. Its just another normal week in managing the time...the training...the preparation. Keep it as normal as possible. Its not the time for changing things. Its about the accumulation of points through out the season...which puts us in this position.

Does Carrick have a preference of whom we come up against?
Its not for me to have a preference…..we`ll find out who we`re up against, then prepare and deal with that. The preference is not really relevant. We`ll play the cards we are dealt and make the most of that.

At this stage of the season, did he think the play-off positions would be this tight and close to the line?
Normally is!
That`s why we didn’t get carried away [during this season].….because it always comes down to the end of the season. You`ve got to take it to the wire and keep performing, performing, performing and see out the ups and downs. We`ve obviously done that and given ourselves a couple of weeks….where we`ve known what`s best for us.

Coventry?
[Mark Robins] has done a fantastic job. Very, very good team. We are well aware of what they do. We`ve watched them a lot [and] there are some really dangerous players in their team. They are up there for a reason. Any team at this stage of the season …... get into the play-offs because they deserve it. But, [no!no!no!] you cant go into anything thinking [I tell you what] we`ll draw this game, we`ll lose this game to suit us. No chance! We`ve got pride in ourselves and our own beliefs. We wont changes things whether its Coventry [in the play-offs] or we don’t play Coventry again.

Paddy McNair? Riley McGree? Johnny? Giles? Ramsey?
The boys are fine. Paddy probably played a little bit more than obviously we had set out…..but ultimately he benefitted from it. It was good to get Riley back….and Tommy [Smith]….they came through it fine, so its been a good week. Johnny hasnt trained [this week]. Gilles: Its touch and go. Ramsey: its unfortunate, but hopefully he will have a long and successful career. [Injuries] never come at a good time. Its not great for us, because he`s a terrific footballer. Injured players coming back in for Monday? We obviously got a number of injuries…..not ideal in the timing…….I`m not dismissing the [injured] players at all. Its about who`s available, if we can get others fit, but we believe in what we`ve got and we`re in good shape. [We will] see at getting the boys back as and when. They are in different stages [of recovery], so we`ll keep our fingers crossed.

Chuba: reaching that 30 goal mark?
He`s never really settled for whether it was10, 15 or 20 [goals]. He`s always wanted more and I`m sure he still does. There`s nothing I havent already said about Chuba. I think hes found a good place to play his football in [Middlesbrough?].

Contracts?
Nah. I don’t want to get into contracts at this time of the year for any player really. We are nearly there in terms of season ending.

Sense of excitement from the fans?
Yeah! And so there should be!…...us and staff and the players are excited…..its a fantastic opportunity to manage our emotions….[we] know whats in front of us. Its not going to be easy. Its unpredictable at times, especially this time of year, but certainly our supporters come and make as much noise and give us as much support as you can, because the boys thrive off it and together hopefully it will work out for us.

When Boro needed six goals to go Top of The Championship.

11th March 1998.
25 years ago, Boro needed an incredible six goals to go top of the Championship. After a 4-0 battering by Forest and thumped 5-0 at QPR Boro hasd a serious "blip"! It was a tall order, but they did it in spectacular fashion. It was a nervy start, but the tension broke when Branca scored the first of the night! A young blonde-haired Alun Armstrong had not long arrived from Stockport. Neil Maddison literally played head tennis against Swindon`s goalie and Branca finished it all off with a spectacular over-head kick! What a night. The atmosphere was electric. It felt unreal....typical Boro!

Mark Robins talks Middlesbrough, final day outcomes and Sheaf fitness

1683441166905.png
Sky Blues boss Mark Robins is ‘proud’ of his players, as they enter the final day of the season looking to secure a place in the play-offs.

City sit 5th in the Championship heading into Monday’s fixture with Middlesbrough, knowing a point, or results elsewhere could see them finish in the top six.

After a season which began in unprecedented circumstances, to be where the Sky Blues are now, Robins told how he is proud of what his players have achieved so far.

The City boss also previewed Monday’s trip to the Riverside, as well as providing the latest fitness update on midfielder Ben Sheaf…

Proud of his players…

“Regardless of the outcome, everyone should be proud of what we’ve achieved and that’s the biggest compliment that anyone can have at a football club.

“We talk about rising together and the togetherness of everybody, it makes you stronger collectively and that’s been true for us.”

WhatsApp Image 2023-05-04 at 13.45.15 (2).jpeg

The opportunity that awaits…

“There is a chance we get a point and we get into the play-offs and then potentially we’re three games away from a return to the Premier League, but we have a big game first on Monday.

“It’s not one we fear, it’s on we’re really looking forward to. They’re (Middlesbrough) a really good team and there are a lot of variables around it, but ultimately, it’s about us and what we do on the day.

“The excitement is there and you can feel it, you could feel it in the stadium last week and that gives you the energy for this week and moving into the game on Monday.”

Coming up against Middlesbrough…

“They’re a good side and they have good movement with good players and intelligence, and they have a way of playing.

“They have a strong squad, and they might have some illness and injuries, as everyone has, so you don’t know how they’re going to go, but we have to just get on with what we have to do and see where it takes us.

“You can never predict accurately. We know where we want to go and they know what they want to do, but it’s just about the day.

“It’s about performance all the time. If you look at outcomes, you’re in trouble, you have a process and a method and you have to try and execute it, that doesn’t change, it’s what we’ve always done.”

WhatsApp Image 2023-05-04 at 13.45.15 (1).jpeg

Update on Sheaf…

“Ben Sheaf is making good progress. Who knows when he could come back, there’s potential in anything, but it’s positive.”

How the squad are…

“They’re fine. We get on with working and that’s what we’re doing. It’s the last game of the season that we want to perform well in and what comes after it we will see.

“We put all our energy into preparations for this game and we’re not looking past it. We know how difficult it is. Middlesbrough is probably the toughest place we could go.

“It’s a great time to be part of Coventry City and we have to embrace it, but whatever happens, there’s loads of learning.”

Draw is best scenario as will keep the mackems out of it and hopefully Millwall win to get 5th so we aren't playing cov 3 times in a row

I was off sick that day and really should not have gone to this game. Sat in North stand shivering and sweating like I was withdrawing from something. Was well worth it though. Presenting I hadn't been there the next day at work was hard work though.
