Boro under Carrick are a long term project

I was hoping we would keep Chuba and Gibbo would splash the cash in a dash for promotion. It is clear now that is not going to happen. Instead the club is investing in promising young players and looking to build for the medium/long term under Carrick. That being the case everyone should calm down and stop being so negative. It suggests that Carrick is committing himself to the club and we need to give him time. I am sure that Carrick will get the team to gel before long and these two defeats will be forgotten about. I suspect we won't win promotion this season, but I am very optimistic about the future.

Two games in, we’ve got a striker and a left back on their way.. and potentially another £10m to see spend

I completely agree and I think a nice stable progression for 2 to 3 years gradually climbing the table with a settled squad who stick around for the duration is the best way to go up.

Yep - people can start complaining if they want and if we go down that route Carrick's job could be under threat in a few weeks if results don't pick up. But do we want to change manager again or can we get behind something long term that may have a few bumps in the road?

Same every season isn’t it, “ it’s a transition season” a “ work in progress “
I’m sick of hearing “we’ll learn from this” it really gets on my goat. I know everyone is always learning but it’s the go to comment from Carrick. Reminds me of Southgate!!!

We’ve had a few “long term projects”. The problem is that it is our policy to change manager in autumn if we’re not near the play offs.

If form got so bad that we fired Carrick this November, that would be 7 of the last 14 seasons we’ve changed manager in the autumn. Woodgate one of few to survive the autumn watershed because it was a “long term project”, but he only lasted until March (ok June but with a 3 month covid pause).

My belief is that Carrick will be treated like most other managers if he can’t deliver results. There is nothing “long term” about it. Some of the signings may well be long term projects who aren’t expected to deliver yet. But the problem is most of them are in the first team just now and aren’t yet cutting the mustard.

Very big 2 weeks coming up for the club on and off the pitch, or it could just be yet another false dawn.

Also worth noting that we haven’t spent more than 7 seasons outside the top flight in a row since (I think) the 60s. The last time we did 7 was of course the last spell (2009-2016). We’re now at 7 again.

If it did become 7 sackings in 14 autumns though, you have to wonder whether it’s the managers that are the problem, or the club itself, or the fans’ expectations, or something else.

Well that makes me feel so much better???

I want to see us building our asset base year on year, with young hungry skilful players. So that when we get promoted we have the ability to compete and not get steamrolled.

I want to see first choice player in or approaching their prime, with backup players in that 21-23 age and exciting players in the U21s that can step up for all positions.

If we don’t go up but we have all the above, I’ll still be happy

We were told we were aiming for top 2 remember, maybe that was just bull$hit coming out of carrick or perhaps he’s not on the same page as Kieron Scott

Am not sure Carrick’s the long term project, that’s our recruitment model. As last season and the season before if the head coach can’t get a tune out of the players he’s given we’ll get another. That’s just the way football is these days and harsh on such as Carrick, but the head coach will always be the fall guy when results don’t go how we want.
