Boro under Carrick are a long term project

Usually we get 'it's a transition year' or a 're-build year' - long term project is a new one. It's all bollox just situation normal. I'm not frustrated, we are a decent Champo club, not a big city, modest & sensible funding, good local owner, decent facilities, hard core of 15k or so loyal fans. This is how it's always been apart from some amazing bursts at the top every now & then and then back down to reality. Just enjoy it, align your expectations that this is what the Boro is. If you want PL glory all the time then support Man City or for a more exciting project then go and follow Newcastle, you'll enjoy your football better.

Careful mate - I pretty much posted this the other day and got dogs abuse.

No, that's not true. We're the same player in the Championship that we've always been whilst in the second tier. The relegated clubs have more money but they've been relegated because they didnt spend wisely the season before, and there's no guarantee they'll do it again.

It's why places open up and teams that haven't been up there find themselves in the top flight.

Fulham, Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth, Luton, Burnley......most have seen the bottom tier of English football, Luton the non league scene, all now in the top flight.
Pretty much all those have changed ownership and had a huge investment which we cant compete with apart from maybe luton. We are not standing still because other clubs are striving forward. In terms of finances i reckon we are no more than midtable in the championship these days

Whilst the sentiment of the opening post are nice - We do not know that for a fact. For all we know, Carrick was promised a budget that has not surficed and he could be unhappy. I would expect we would not know as the man is a model professional when in front of the press.

Either way, going for the young players is always a gamble. More don't make it than do and we cannot be blinded by the success of the young loanees we had last year. What happened last season was a rare outcome that those players came in and all had probably their best period of their careers in a club bursting with confidence under a new manager.

It is still very early doors, so time for these new players to gel and the team to start to show improvements but as they are all mainly unknowns, their is the real risk they they don't gel and it does not work and we don't improve. Long term plan or not for Gibbo and Carrick. The majority of fans will not accept it and we all know where that leads to

4th last season. Mid table?

Big picture is we are on the right track, but the challenge now is to move along that track a little bit more quickly. Carrick hasn't even been here a year yet, but he should be under pressure, along with the rest of the staff, to try and achieve promotion this season because momentum takes a while to build but only a short period of time to lose. Moving along more quickly requires a bit of investment so there it is a big couple of weeks coming up.

As others have said on this thread, we're coming close to matching some of our longest periods of mooching around the second division, and every year the money for players needed to compete in the PL increases.

I would argue that the reason Brighton and Brentford are enjoying so much success now is that they didn't have the same expectations as our club during their building up from the academy periods, so could absorb blows without the knee jerk reactions from all around.
