Boro under Carrick are a long term project

Do you think the 10 million will be invested in new players?
Not sure

We had more money come in last season from Tav and Spence, and we didn't spend that to any great deal. I suspect that £10m will get swallowed up in the day to day runnings of the club, particularly these days player wages when bang ordinary players are on ridiculous money.

There might well be a long term project, particularly when you look at who we brought in in that mad week in July, but is that to produce players for the Boro first team, or fatten them up for market? At the time, I thought only Dieng would be a day one starter, but here we are. The issue is the short term expediency because of the gulf in finances with the Premier League. Luton will come straight back down, but with a few hundred million in their back pockets, and a couple of cheeky wins that will buoy the fans. Meanwhile we're playing Rotherham. Again.

You have to grasp the promotions when they come along - look at Huddersfield last season, play off finalists to relegation certainties until Warnock came in. At the moment we look a million miles off the team that beat Norwich 5-1 in April. If we're 20th in November and looking as bad as we did yesterday, all the bleating about "long term projects" won't save Carrick.

As I always say, so forgive me, we had a brilliant decade and a half within living memory; and that sharpens how we feel now we look like just another club scrabbling round in the dirt. What happened to "sporting glory"? We did compete, and now we can't, or won't.

we tried but he was sold too late in the window, we tried to spend about 9m on strand Larsen. In the end we did the sensible thing and not panic buy or over pay.

I believe there is still 10m+ to be spent on the right players

These are usually my sentiments, and they still are, the only snag being that one season in the PL out of 15 is actually not normal for us (or going longer than 7 seasons out of it).

We need to find a way back in there in the relatively near future otherwise it suggests a permanent downward trajectory for the club, I’d say. I’m not even that bothered about being in the PL, but we are traditionally a yo-yo club in danger of becoming just a second tier club perpetually treading water.

I’m all for fans being realistic but its kind of understandable for them to moan if we’re not what we used to be on any level. We should fully accept spells out of the PL, but it’s now becoming a real rarity for us to be in it.
True - we are overdue a run up there even if for a few seasons.

Improving season by season sounds a sensible idea yet year by year we are becoming a smaller and smaller player in the championship as many more clubs are boosted by new owners and investment. We are not moving forward compared to the most of the championship. Wait two more years in championship and it will be we can't compete with poxy wrexham and its glitzy owners

Whilst I agree with this, it’s difficult to suggest an alternative way forward. Gibson can’t/won’t sell the club because of the financial implications to himself, and even if he wrote off the debt, there’s always a risk it goes the totally opposite way to the one we want.

Usually we get 'it's a transition year' or a 're-build year' - long term project is a new one. It's all bollox just situation normal. I'm not frustrated, we are a decent Champo club, not a big city, modest & sensible funding, good local owner, decent facilities, hard core of 15k or so loyal fans. This is how it's always been apart from some amazing bursts at the top every now & then and then back down to reality. Just enjoy it, align your expectations that this is what the Boro is. If you want PL glory all the time then support Man City or for a more exciting project then go and follow Newcastle, you'll enjoy your football better.
We may not be a big city but we are definitely a big club for this level and our gates home and away show that. When we’re told we’re going for automatic promotion and end up in the situation we’re in is ridiculous

I know I posted this before but I think it gives good background on what the Championship has become. I don't think clubs focus on truely building anymore, they are gambling season by season for the prize. Wages and costs are out of control so they need to find young bright sparks cheap or get good loanees in the hope of snagging a lucrative promotion then work it out from there.
Championship - Stupidest League

The video at the bottom of your comment deserves it's own thread. The laughable stupidity of the championship!

It's no wonder we're not spending big, I bet we're right on the edge of financial fair play after Wilders' tenure.

Don’t think we will be to be honest. We’ve been bringing wages down year on year and making big sales too.

The biggest bonus is that the Monk years are finally off our ffp this season. At its peak britt and fletcher cost us approx ~24m on our ffp calculation! Outrageous for two poor footballers. Even this summers calculation they cost us ~8m on ffp. Without selling anyone we have an extra ~8m space on ffp this year just from those two player finally disappearing into history.

We definitely are a long, or longer, term project under Carrick but the aim is always promotion. Boro just can’t be a second-tier team forever. And I think everyone at the club is aiming for promotion. Any player who isn’t will be moved out and sold. You can’t have that mentality around.

You can’t really plan to go up next season or the season after, you need to get out of this league at the earliest opportunity. There’s no way someone like Carrick will be settling for anything less than that either. The longer-term plan is more an off-field thing anyway IMO, in terms of average age and value of the squad, style of play, recruitment model, scouting and youth. On the pitch, the aim is to get up and out of this league as quickly as possible.

I've the idea of investing in young players for the future its just the ones we have brought in up to what we've seen just seem nothing g special to say we been all over the world looking for them hope im wrong

I was hoping we would keep Chuba and Gibbo would splash the cash in a dash for promotion. It is clear now that is not going to happen. Instead the club is investing in promising young players and looking to build for the medium/long term under Carrick. That being the case everyone should calm down and stop being so negative. It suggests that Carrick is committing himself to the club and we need to give him time. I am sure that Carrick will get the team to gel before long and these two defeats will be forgotten about. I suspect we won't win promotion this season, but I am very optimistic about the future.

Sadly if the long term project has us in the bottom 6 around December this will all be out of the window and Carrick will get the sack.

‘Long term project’ is a lie - football is only about the current season and your league position now. If we don’t improve we’ll be moving on to another long term project…

The club was nowhere near FFP limits at the end of the Wilder tenure.
The sale of Akpom has seen a £35m profit on sale of player registrations in just a year.
The annual amortisation of players bought is a tiny fraction of this.
The wage bill has been reducing too.

It seems clear to me that Gibson is no longer willing to cover losses using Parent Company and is operating the club sustainably.
Which will make getting out of this league almost a fluke (unless it is downover) and will still leave his club with over £120m of negative shareholder value, him owed £140m plus and his equity worthless.
It is not what I would be doing if I had his wealth and income. But it is absolutely his prerogative as owner to do so.
He has hired a snake oil salesman who has promised to turn many rags to riches. Carrick is the one who will sadly carry the can, when it is recruitment again that will have failed.
4 windows already Keiran. Tick tock.

No, that's not true. We're the same player in the Championship that we've always been whilst in the second tier. The relegated clubs have more money but they've been relegated because they didnt spend wisely the season before, and there's no guarantee they'll do it again.

It's why places open up and teams that haven't been up there find themselves in the top flight.

Fulham, Brentford, Brighton, Bournemouth, Luton, Burnley......most have seen the bottom tier of English football, Luton the non league scene, all now in the top flight.
