Some people just voted out without thinking it through

I heard a French woman talking about this and stating that the British people will still be able to live abroad but the authorities would now be able to choosy who they let in. She went on to say that if you are rich, then it wouldn't be a problem.

The people they will let in are the ones who convinced the idiots to leave.

On another note, what will happen to all these little Britain estates in Spain and France. Surely there will be small villages that will stand completely empty.
To quote a phrase I have heard from others (that I do not agree with):

"All these foreigners coming over here. Abusing our generous benefits system. We need to control our borders".

I am sure that rings a bell.

By the way, Spain had already adopted a policy of checking whether you could support yourself financially in 2005. A check like that was made when my wife and I applied for residency here then.

So such border control measures were and are available in the EU. The UK just chose not to use them.

Just like it has chosen not to have a unique identification number allocated to all UK nationals at birth. With a unique number allocated at time of application for residency for all foreign nationals.

The system here in Spain uses these numbers (NIE number for us foreigners) and associated documentation to identify legal residents in Spain. You also need such a number allocated to you to buy property here.

All this was pointed out to people in the UK prior to the Brexit vote.

PS On a covid note, illegal residents are being allowed to register at local medical centres here at the moment. Without being reported to the authorities. So they can be contacted to be vaccinated.

It's a sadly vocal number too. It's the worst thing about brexit for me. Of the many many bad things. People have willingly restricted freedom of movement. Including their own
Exactly. Too many were taken in with the lies that Turkey would soon join the EU and there would be a stampede to Britain!

I know a few intelligent people who voted leave, so not everyone is daft. However, those voting leave while living in Spain are idiots at worst and naive at best. I would have thought the million Brits in Spain would vote exactly like Gibraltar did.

Im still at a loss as to how they convinced over half the electorate that this bag of sh ite was a good thing for our country and ourselves personally.......
How did they manage, with people like Farage,Johnson,Mogg,Gove and the rest spouting absolute Bo llox on a daily basis....Goves father called him out for blaming the EU for losing his fish buisness....it was a lie and his father said so, no one must have been listening , Farage with his poster of lines of refugees heading here, lies..smoke and mirrors, Johnson wouldnt know the truth if it smacked him in the face...Moggs company re locating and yet this gang of scumbags were able to convince over half the voters that what they were telling them was true and great things awaited......tch! Whats happening? The truth is slowly sinking in and people (some) are seeeing Brexit for what it really is...absolute fkn madness

Some being the operative word here. I know it's hard to admit you've been conned. Hard to say you've made a mistake but luckily some have seen that they've been lied to.

It's the ones that still can't see it yet that worry me. The ones that argue that blue is yellow. I'm not sure were their head is at? If it's that they can see a benefit we can't they are certainly keeping it to themselves

The American's were mad to elect Trump, but were able to correct that four years later. Brexit is a long term gamble that will make nothing better, but could make things worse.

We've been living in Spain for nearly 6 years now - working, not retired - and people in Britain ask us things like "are the supermarket shelves emptier since Brexit?" Err, no. It's amazingly arrogant to think Britain leaving is affecting the rest of the EU much. Any pain on this side is spread between 27 countries, on that side in 1. Who suffers???

About the swallows voting for Brexit, it's just incredible. I think it's the same arrogant attitude that the EU would bow down and grant Britain everything it wanted. A rude awakening I'm afraid.

Having to spend 6 months in the UK is not exactly a major hardship or alternatively paying some tax in Spain or paying for private health care or getting a Spanish driving licence.

The people caught out are probably those whose retired incomes are say £15k a year or less and have sold up in the UK. They expected to basically be 100% British, use the Spanish NHS, use their UK licences, live in Spain all the year round and pay no income taxes there. Personally I find the Mediterrean too hot in the Summer - 20 - 22 degrees is about my ideal. I don't sit in the house with the heating ever above 22. If it was above 25 I would have the air con on. Maybe part cooler parts of the Canaries would suit me or Galicia in the North West.

No. It means that you spend more than 1/2 of a calendar year here. Plus you pay your taxes here rather than the UK.

I am still a UK citizen with a UK passport. So is my wife. However I have applied for dual citizenship with Ireland. As my grandad was born in Northern Ireland.
Quick question Spanishman. As you have dual citizenship did this mean it can also apply to your wife (assuming she didn't have dual citizenship)?

Following the referendum I worked with loads of Polish, a few Dutch, a few Italians and loads of Norwegians. Most of them had any idea how Brexit was going as their media paid little attention to it and the general population just carried on with their lives. If anything, the Norwegians had knowledge as the UK tends to get a lot of coverage there, but the rest absolutely no idea.

The Leave politicians were adamant the EU had just as much to lose so a deal would be easy. The reality was a very different story.

This. If you want to doss in a country , pay a bit of tax, change a driving licence, pay a bit of healthcare. It’s hardly the end of the world. Only entitled idiots would complain about such a thing.

Hi,

I have not got it yet. I applied in December 2019. Processing of requests for citizenship has been stop and go since then. It is hoped they will start processing them again in April (if Ireland moves down to level 3 then).

The reason I have done it is because our gestoria (cross between an accountant and legal advisor) said it was worth doing. Without having exact knowledge of how it will help (in December 2019 when I applied).

From what I have read it does not apply to my wife.

We already had everything sorted in Spain for many years. So retained our rights when Brexit happened. We could have got one of the new TIE (new style foreigner identification) cards. However we have not bothered with that. We just kept our paperwork from years ago. We will get a TIE card eventually eventually.

So the Irish citizenship application is really a nice to have rather than something essential for us.

Surely Northern Ireland has left the EU.

Surely Northern Ireland has left the EU.
When claiming Irish citizenship through a grandparent being Irish it does not matter whether they were born in Ireland or Northern Ireland. My grandad was an Irish catholic born in Belfast. This should qualify me for Irish citizenship (eventually).

Thus allowing myself to be resident in Spain as an Irish (EU) citizen. With my wife (and myself) having UK citizenship.

I will probably not bother applying for an Irish passport as we tend to travel together. She would not be too happy with me getting through passport control quicker and leaving her in the queue.
