Some people just voted out without thinking it through

Lots of people were breaking the rules. Spending more than 6 months a calendar year in Spain. While still paying tax in the UK.

Previous status was not checked closely. Brexit has changed that.
I wonder if the Spanish authorities accepted this given the sheer numbers of people involved. I struggle to see how people could be so stupid and vote leave when it was clearly going to change their status.

I think they accepted it as they were EU members. They probably still do the same now for current members of the EU here.

Brexit has caused stricter rules for UK people. It was obvious it was going to happen.

As in France (although the numbers of 'illegals' are much smaller) it was quite easy to be invisible if you do not declare your arrival and never fill in a tax form. The problems start when you are ill and need medical treatment or have trouble with the law, driving infringements etc.

Yep. I had a few heated exchanges during the referendum trying to make the point that free movement of people was a good thing. It seems some British ex-pats didn’t understand that.

I try to be a nice person, I do. And I'd like to think I generally am a generous-spirited, open armed, helpful citizen who would always try to aid and sympathise with anyone in need, in any way I could during tough times like these.

But this? Sorry. The thick, arrogant c**t deserves all he gets and more.

I wonder what this do as regards the property market.
Cash buyer here ready and waiting.
Where I am the market is still pretty solid. However I live in a quiet area with tourist property on the coast. 10 minutes drive from a working town. So it is mainly Spanish locals buying where I am. As we are becoming more of a mixed tourist and dormitory town.

This is such a poetic irony. An EU country exercising it’s right to remove people from its country as a direct result of a vote won because of xenophobic anti-immigration rhetoric. Imagine that, being able to control immigration as an EU member state.

Its going absolutely brilliantly, isn’t it? I know millions remain in denial with their hands over the eyes and their ears turned off but the reality and the truth are persistent. And unfortunately it hasn’t even hit properly yet, we are still being cushioned.

Because they were told by Johnson and Gove that it would make no difference to them.
There's a tweet going around of Gove on Sky before the referendum telling a woman at a Q & A that absolutely nothing will change if she votes leave.

You voted for it, you won, suck it up !

Just like the fishing industry was told they’d be better off. Just like everyone was told that there’d be no border in the Irish Sea. Just like Johnson telling people to out any customs forms in the bin. Just like everyone was told that the EU would not erect trade barriers.

Anyone not seeing the pattern is either stupid or a liar.

I totally get that, but it is the likes of you and me who love to travel in Europe that suffer and not these idiots that voted to leave. I am retiring this year and always thought we would downsize and buy a second home in France. That looks out of the window now.

Not sure what our options are now.

You can still buy a 2nd home in the EU. No problem.

You just have to be careful about the time you spend in it.

Plus be aware of taxation and other costs in the country, region and munipality.

Buying the second home was to spend more time abroad than in the North East and still have somewhere to retreat if things didn't turn out to be what we wanted. The wife was hoping to work in France and I was going to be a kept man and live off my pension.

We already spend over 60 days a year in France for the summer, October and Christmas holidays.

Again, this is possible. However you would have to have proof that you could afford to live there. Plus become tax resident in the country if you spend more than half a year there each year. It is just that it is being monitored and controlled more.

I heard a French woman talking about this and stating that the British people will still be able to live abroad but the authorities would now be able to choosy who they let in. She went on to say that if you are rich, then it wouldn't be a problem.

The people they will let in are the ones who convinced the idiots to leave.

On another note, what will happen to all these little Britain estates in Spain and France. Surely there will be small villages that will stand completely empty.

Still absolutely baffles me that people actually voted to take away FOM, I'm sure idiots like this were convinced it wouldn't work both ways though.
