Qatar 22

I hope all the england team and management take the knee over there. But I bet there won't be any rainbow laces shown over there or any other displays of support for lgbtq rights. I am absolutely appalled at it being held there and intend to watch as little as possible.

I think what erimus was trying to infer albeit clumsily is it's a bit hypocritical of the players to take part and effectively endorse a world Cup built on modern slavery and human rights abuses. I happily support BLM but I do find the silence for others discriminated groups like these Indian workers disappointing.

Another question.
These days players seem to be much more socially vocal. See Marcus Rashford.
Think any of them might make a stand and just say I'm not going?

Doubt it, not when it will affect their own pockets with sponsorship deals from appearances and whatnot

No doubt Gary Lineker will be there presenting even though he usually has a lot to say on injustices.

If anyone is expecting anyone that will profit from it to make a stand, I wouldn’t count on it

Yea cheers Glover, clumsilys right

A pretty repulsive attitude frankly. Because we won't boycott the WC we shouldn't protest about racism?
I think the point is that there should be protest about BOTH. Not selective outrage for one or the other. Racism is Racism. Whether people choose to take the Knee, raise a fist, whatever. That is for the individual to decide.

some good points raised about how far players personal convictions will take them. If they take the knee in the World Cup it would be irony writ large. 😎

I have no interest whatsoever in the World Cup next year if it takes place in Qatar. I believe strongly no country should participate and I still hope their consciences will somehow get the message and take collective action.

Hope not expect.

Irony at best I'd say. I'd say it's on the hypocrisy border.

Life is cheap out there where '3rd world' workers are treated like cattle. Slaughtered in the name of football. In their thousands.

6500 deaths during construction they say. Find it hard to believe, staggering. How can you kill so mamy people building something?

Balance that with the BLM movement that came out of the high profile deaths of Trayvon Martin, George Floyd etc. I fully support BLM and taking the knee BTW and only use it in context.

Where's the Indian, Lebanese, Bangladeshi Lives Matter campaign? Shhhhh. The silence is deafening. Governments, FIFA, the FA, and the players.

We're all to blame, us football people. We'll be watching, buying merchandise, buying the Coca Cola and MacDonalds and supporting the World Cup.
We'll be suckling the Corporate Pig for all it's worth. So yes we're involved, all of us responsible.

But not to the extent of the players. I wonder, will any of them stand up as well as take the knee?

But you will watch some of it?

Interesting! I certainly didn't know that these "protests" took place but without real action from individuals or organisations, they are just meaningless gestures.
It's Fifa, Uefa, national associations and governments that should be doing more but don't criticise players for meaningless actions.

Sportspeople have contracts they have to honour and it doesn't help matters one iota when they are accused of being hypocrites or woke or virtue signalling or doing things 'for show'.

But that is all that it is without decisive action - virtue signalling. I do agree that it is the football associations and governing bodies that should be making a stand.

If people do not make these "virtue signals" why would any of the governing bodies bat an eyelid?

Simple. You get people like E74 to dismiss the desires of people for a fairer world as hypocrisy if they do not live as celibate monks in a bare cell when they protest. Its an easy get out which appeals to the hard of thinking. You get people to use terms like "Social Justice Warrior" as an insult. But no one can tell me why fighting for social justice, even just simply by pointing out injustice is a bad thing?

At least he swear at me so he can't think that bad of me

OK, have a nice day

"More than 6,500 migrant workers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have died in Qatar since it won the right to host the World Cup 10 years ago"

Let that sink in and say that the tournament should go ahead.

If 1 Qatari had died things would have changed - pure racism.

I was looking on fifas statement page on rascism and at the bottom of the page is a list of about 10 fifa partners including qatar Airways.
But you will watch some of it?
its hard to avoid sometimes

And so it goes on. de Koch in trouble, maybe not for not taking the knee but for not explaining the reasons why.

Getting really complicated now and having more and more of an effect in sport.
