Tavernier offer accepted - official now

People going on like we've lost Andrea Pirlo who'd dedicated his life to MFC.

If he doesn't want to be here, f**k him. Take the money and move on. I think it's good business for someone that doesn't want to play for Boro, will soon be approaching the end of his contract and frankly, isn't as good as people are making him out to be.

We've lost MUCH better players than Marcus f*****g Tavernier before. Prior to Wilder arriving he was very average.

What's key now is spending Bournemouth's money wisely on replacing him.

We shouldn’t be afraid to lose good players if the money is right. Brentford and Norwich have been masters of it for years, you sell a player for big money and you reinvest on much cheaper players and go again.

If we go and get 3 players with the Tav money that are a good age with potential to grow in value then that’s the kind of model I expected when Scott came in. You don’t go and replace Tav with the close to full potential Championship midfielder for near enough the same money we got for Tav. You want to get the next Tav for £3m-4m and flip that into another £10m+.

Jones probably isn't as reactive and sensitive as some of our fans - He probably knows that all clubs, possibly aside for 2 or 3 clubs in the world, have to sell if the price is right.

Nice jumping from us selling a couple of players, one of whom was never going to feature anyway, to we're now an "easy touch" - assume that applies to say Man Utd if Ronaldo leaves, or Man City when Gabriel Jesus left to go to Arsenal ?
Listen I'm fine with it, we will go again, but we are an easy touch, this only emerged a few days ago, its fairly well established for example that Gykores wants out at Cov ( i live in Cov), but cov city are playing hard ball over his transfer. With tav we find out one day that he wants out and a few days later he's gone for a very average fee in todays market. Like I say, we will go again and re build but we are an easy touch im afraid. What benefit is it to Jones to stay with us another year I might ask? Again if Jones goes we will re build and go again, and I'm.more interested in the next 5 years than I am this year. I also recognise that we don't want to end up like derby, and civid was a huge hit to us and others. We have a great chairman, I'm not so sure about some of our ops managers though and think we could have played a slightly longer game with this increasing the fee.

Hopefully Mcgree is ready to step up, I do think mcgree has more about him going forward than tav and could potentially go on to play at a higher level.

Haven’t we just took over a month to sell Spence and everyone was complaining that we take too long to negotiate? Now we are an easy touch?

I imagine this deal have been on the table for a while, there was rumour of a Bournemouth bid weeks ago but Tav has now said he wants to leave so we’ve accepted it.

It is a real shame but if he wants to go fair enough and nobody is irreplaceable. It is a shame he does not think he can get to the prem. with Boro.

Big jump from the Championship to the Premier League though especially in a team that will likely be struggling. Can't see him being a 8/10 player this season.
He is a good buy and he would have been 8/10 for us this season. So we have lost an 8/10 player for this season and Bournemouth have gained a 6/10 one given his relative inexperience and level he is going into.

Last summer PL clubs were in for him
Warnock said he’d be playing PL this season
We bought Riley McGree
Wilder is looking to bring in a midfielder
WHY ARE PEOPLE SHOCKED BY THIS?

And we don’t know how long these negotiations have been going on anyway so a bit nebulous to guess how long it took.

Going against the grain here but I think the club did want to sell. For the right price.

Don't get me wrong, I think we'd have happily kept him if the bid wasn't high enough. But once it was clear he wasn't going to sign a contract extension, I think they were more than happy to take a sizeable fee rather than have the more awkward situation next summer of trying to get a fair price with only a year left on his contract.

As is quite often the case with the club I don't think they're being entirely open with us. Maybe for good reason, many fans are very quick to criticise. But I reckon when they talk about "doing everything they could to keep him" what I think they're talking about is trying to get him to extend his contract.

At the event on Monday Wilder said Tav wasn't pushing for a move but that "every player has his price".

I don't think that was untruthful. We've chosen to cash in now and it makes sense for reasons others have highlighted on this thread.

I don't think Tav would've been a problem if we'd turned it down though. He is obviously more than happy to go and play in the prem, and I'm sure he "wanted to go". But that's different from forcing a move and threatening to throw your toys out the pram if you don't get one.

Once Boro got a fee they were comfortable with they will have put it to Tav with understanding they were quite happy for him to say no but would expect him to negotiate a longer term deal with us
He indicated he wanted to go so lets get him out as soon as we can, shake hands and move on

I actually thought we might have had a sale lined up in January with two left footed midfielders coming in with the arrivals of McGree for a decent fee and Boyd-Munce as cover.

You should buy a football club, it's all so easy in your head.

I see it, the correlation is that Jones sees a good player leave and then thinks about things himself, talks to his agent. Agent, player, and circling clubs all realise now that boro will sell and are perhaps an easy touch its about the domino effect and the potential realisation for the better players that boro are not promotion contenders and are at the same time an easy touch. Having said this, I rank financial stability above boom and bust promotion campaigns, we will re build and move on!
On the other hand, young players will see the Boro as a good place to develop and somewhere they’ll be allowed to leave if the chance of career progression comes along. Like Southampton, for example, or Brighton or Brentford. You can’t stand in the way of a player moving on to a higher level, especially when they’ve applied themselves and done a good job for you.

One of the Southampton staff was on the Monday Night Club on 5Live last season and said young players want to know they’ll be allowed to leave if bigger clubs want them. You just have to plan properly. Southampton have factored this into their model and generate cash through it so they can be competitive.

Young players will look at Tav and Spence and think “if I go there and do well and a bigger club or team higher up the pyramid comes in, they’ll let me go.” We have to be pragmatic. This is part of developing young players, accepting that at some point they’ll move on.

This is what Boro should be tapping into IMO. Developing young talent for the first team with an eye on generating income through selling. For too long we haven’t done that anywhere near enough.

Not too happy about this, considering he had two years left on his contract, just hope we've got the right price, but I expect the club have undervalued what he's worth to us and Wilder.

I sometimes wonder if fans would rather we signed crap players that no one else wants to buy. Part of having good players when you’re not Real Madrid or Barcelona is that eventually a club in a better position is gonna take them from you and that should be a great thing for us. It means they’ve performed very well and that we are gonna to make a good amount of money that we can reinvest.

Its pretty clear the player has asked for this move, which in some ways feels better than the club pushing him, because it leaves me with more confidence the money will be re-invested and the club is still serious about a promotion push.

I suspect Tav has been told we are going for promotion in the last 2 seasons and decided at the end of last season he wanted his own promotion.

Because obviously our better players are in the shop window, and given the season jones had i would be expecting intrest. 😕
Tav is ahead of Jones in career development. He's played 155 times over a few seasons. Jones has had half a good season. If he pushes on and has a good season this year then I would expect he will generate some interest but at the moment I don't think there will be that much interest in actually buying him right now, more like people may have marked him as one to keep an eye on.

It's a good point, we are working towards being a major stepping stone for players with ambition, if we keep picking up younger players or bringing them through ourselves and making a 20mill + profit each year then that is the dream.
