Carrick learning.

From all this, Carrick has learned, how to win ugly, how to scrap and be more street wise, how to change formations.
But one thing I do hope, next season (with the right players) he sticks to his principles of playing out from the back and a game based around controlling possession, some of the best football I have ever seen Boro play is under Carrick.

I think now, he is getting the experience needed to grind out results.

That didn't happen last season.

I really believe in him and I’m sure with the right additions we will be promoted next season.

Yes. We're a few players away (and some would say more than a few) but with the Rogers money and the FFP headroom I'd say we have a chance to put together a competitive squad.

Probably 3 or 4 permanent players and a couple of loanees next season.
Depends on who gets binned this season.

He belives in the system he plays of messing around with the ball at the back & will return to it so where has he learned from his mistakes his hand was forced to change his system or get the chop.

There was zero chance of gibbo sacking him so not sure where you got that from.
Gibbo believes in him to figure it out and he’s done that whilst we have a boat load of injuries

Wouldn’t be surprised to see us revert to 4-2-3-1 next home game. Howson coming back as much causing our change in fortunes than the system, though our centre halves available are most suited to playing wing backs.

playing out from the back started to fail when Glover started to play and Fry got injured
Glover gave everybody anxiety whenever he got the ball
and I'm not saying Fry is a master at playing out from the back but he learnt the system and very well versed in it.

In that formation I just think ayling is lacking in quality and legs after watching him for 6-8 games but in a 5 at the back ayling can cope

Just my opinion like

I think learning some pragmatism is not a bad thing.

I think last season we developed a very specific version of 4231 Smith covered almost as a 3. Giles pushed up on the wing. McGree came in tight. Forss would cut in from the right to be an extra striker for Giles crosses that would leave the defence a difficult decision on who to cover.

There were rare changes - the two base midfielders played almost every game.

I think Carrick has tried to re-create last seasons success, but I think we both have different players and almost no continuity to learn a strange asymmetrical system with non typical cover.

He has had to learn how to cope with not having the same players each week and the answer to that is sometimes pragmatism.

Some of us might not have read the transcripts of his Media Conferences before games.
So here's a reminder of two short comments from Michael Carrick recently :

[Pre QPR]

With a game next Tuesday, how does this effect team selection?

There's always the bigger picture in mind. I think, where we've come from, what footballs been had, who's fit, who's fresh, who needs a breather. It's a constant balance that we're trying to get. For loads of different reasons, we haven't been able to pick consistent teams over the course of the season, so it's always finding a balance. [With] three games coming up in a short space of time, we'll make the best of it now we've got a few bodies back.

[Pre Norwich]

Will this game affect his tactics?

It's never the same you know, and we always adapt, and we've always got a plan, and we've always got a certain way of playing. I've said it a long time I mean what's the same approach, you know, what formations is that.....you start dissecting it. You can think of all sorts of different things....... we've got a way of playing, and [what] we believe in. We've adapted plenty of times and played a whole range [of ways] ........ so we'll find a way.

The subs are still an odd one as he never makes one before the infamous 60 min mark ( or very close to it) this seems to be a modern trend among young managers

Fantastic post. Really well summarised and I totally agree.

This just shows he is still learning his trade Steve MC claren will be available soon he might be to one to get us promoted even though his time was up last time he left I would give him another chance as I had enough of this league as we are way too long down in this league.

I think the way he likes us to play can be really effected by low confidence, more than most tactics and he has to have another approach for when we are going through tough times
This is another one.

I think high risk front foot possession football is more effected by confidence variations.

You need to be decisive and believe in what you are doing.

I don't think he's learned, not that he really needed to, to be honest, I think he's done alright with what he have given him this year. We probably would have got promoted last year had he been in charge all year and had we had the players we had from Jan onwards.
This season went down hill when we started to suffer more injuries and lost players to AFCON and Asia tournaments etc. I just think he's had some of his better tools/ more options back available. Our squad is paper thin on quality, so when we lose key players it causes us big problems.

Against Leicester they were bay far the better side, but couldn't hit a barn door, and we scrapped out a great win.
Plymouth caused us big problems but our individual performances were terrible.
Stoke wasn't as bad, especially as we were away, but again individuals not playing that great
Against Norwich we would have probably got beat if it wasn't for the red, and that was with two up top, at home
Against QPR we didn't set up much differently from recently and could have been 0-2 if it wasn't for Dieng (who was away for all of our bad run), then they seemed to lose heart.

We've played two up top against a couple of teams recently, but we never really had that option for a long time before as Latte was injured, as well as Coburn who would be second choice lone striker. I don't really see Forss as a lone striker, which maybe why he hasn't played there.

We've still tried to play it out from the back, which is the best option I think, but Dieng also has decent distribution so can be more pro-active with that.

We've started to limit the soft goals we concede, especially since Dieng came back.
